...one past memory that stands out the most to me is playing for my high school football team. The time I had spent on the football field as a teen was without a doubt the best time of my life. It’s been a long eight years since I have played football but, I can’t go a day without reflecting back on my ball playing days. Every time I see a high school football game I wish I could turn back the hands of time and play football for my high school again and relive all the great moments I spent with my teammates again. Growing up, I went to a lot of different schools, because my family moved a lot so as result I never had steady solid friendships also as a pre-teen I was getting in to trouble and spending too much time on the streets and not focusing on my studies. I was skipping a lot of school and starting to rebel a lot. I was headed on the wrong track my older brother took a notice to this and stepped in to steer me back on the right course. His suggestion was joining football. He said I had too much free time and nothing positive going on and looking back he was right. He helped gain an interest in football and got me signed up on the team. My brother being such a positive person and looking out for me and my future and playing on the football team really saved my life as I look back. If he never helped me get into football who knows what my future would have held. When I became a player on the football team that was the first time I had real true friends. My mother said...

...Great Debaters Modern Urban World Torrence The differences Whites and Blacks, as well as their comparisons, are portrayed through two different movies of two different eras of American history. Remember the Titans centers around an integrated high school football team in Virginia in the 1970’s. The team has to figure out how to bond together as one in order to overcome racial adversity of the south in the 1970’s. The Great Debaters takes place in Texas during the Great Depression of the 1930’s. Three black college students on a debate team, along with their coach Professor Tolson, travel the road debating more and more prestigious colleges, while developing as young educated black men (and women) in the racist 1930’s south. Character development is both films plays a vital role. In Remember the Titans, the relationship formed between Gary and Julius, and Boone and Yost symbolizes the White/Black differences coming together and actually forming stronger friendships then that of two of the same races. There were also the supporting roles of characters that helped integrate the football team such as Louie, Rev, and Blue who were the very first players who were able to set color aside as it has nothing to do with neither football nor the quality of a man. In The Great Debaters, the growth of Henry Lowe and the relationship between James Farmer Jr. and his father are crucial to watch. Henry Lowe starts off as a misguided young man who responds to conflicts with walking away...

...that has developed my aspirations, desires, and subconscious tendencies. The one process that has defined who I was and became, has been football. I played football all through middle and high school. I started playing it as just another sport. I was always a very active kid, and played as many different sports as I could. Originally I loved the fast pace of the game, and that it afforded me a chance to hit other kids without penalty. Over the years, however, football came to mean more to me than a free-for-all arena. Especially by the time I entered high school, football was a community: the most important community in my life. Simply through getting up early day after day in the summer for grueling 2-a-days, and continuing that effort to just show up, battered and bruised, day after day, to get better and help my teammates achieve success, I forged myself a niche. The wind sprints, bag drills, lifting sessions, and hitting drills were, in a way, ways to achieve a sense of place for myself that I could feel like I earned, and that people respected. Not only was I working with others to achieve a similar goal (winning), but through that work we were becoming brothers. The sense of camaraderie on the field began to transfer over to everyday life. My teammates and I would sit together at lunch, joke together, hang out together after school, and lie to administrators to get each other out of trouble. Through a game, a real-life unity occurred. Because of this, many other students...

...member of our squadron’s ground school. I joined Air Cadets with a few goals; one of which was to live out my dream of flying and get my glider and pilot licenses hence why I am applying for this scholarship. I strongly believe that I have the work ethic, attitude, determination and dedication that are required to be successful at the Regional Gliding School in Gimli this year. At my squadron, I always attend extra cadet activities like sports nights, bush exercises, leadership and aviation weekends, glider familiarization days and most importantly ground school on Monday nights. Not only do I have an excellent attendance record but I also have a positive attitude towards the cadet program as well as everyone that is a part of it; I am also very respected by my peers. In recent years as a cadet, I have had the privilege to attend three different summer cadet camps. These cadet camps were the General Training and Basic Leadership courses in Penhold and the Basic Survival course in Cold Lake. Outside of cadets, I attend Miles McDonnell Collegiate. I am a grade 11 honors student in the very demanding International Baccalaureate Program. I maintain a very good reputation with my teachers as well as very good marks. I volunteer as a puppeteer and an actor in my local church for the Kid zone Program and this upcoming spring, I am going to begin coaching flag football for the little leagues. During the past few years, I have played flag football for Football Manitoba and previous to that...

...Amazing Autumn The most amazing season of the year is autumn, or as most southerners call it fall. Fall is the time of year when football comes on, the leaves change, bonfires are in full swing, and anything pumpkin and apple is selling. The anticipation of all the little trick-or-treaters, and knowing that family will be around in just a few short weeks makes the heart warm from the inside out. Fall brings Thanksgiving, Halloween, and much more, it also starts to bring everyone’s heart out. Everyone has a bigger heart it seems when fall comes and makes it appearance for a few months, after that it leaves one longing for it until it comes back around. Fall is full of wonderful things that make the season what it is. At the beginning of an East Tennessee fall, all which is heard is “Go big orange!’ All people want to see are the mountains’ trees changing from the bright green and dull green colors into reds, oranges, yellows, and some deep purples. The changing of the leaves’ color and the yelling of Tennessee Volunteer fanatics are how one will know the wonderful season fall is upon us. When fall arrives, Starbucks starts to sell pumpkin spice lattes, and Wal-Mart sells pumpkins to carve. Some will start to see women and men drinking the hot and delicious pumpkin spice lattes and children planning what to carve on their pumpkins. With children planning to carve pumpkins, people will start to see the pumpkins with rather menacing, and some humorous, faces carved into them...

...Changing Lives a Football Team at a Time In Jeffery Marx’s “He Turns Boys into Men” article, he introduces Coach Joe Ehrmann, former NFL star who seeks to reduce false masculinity at the school he coaches at. Joe Ehrmann’s resume is anything beyond ordinary. After 13 years as a Baltimore Colt, Ehrmann looks to accomplish more significant things as an inner-city minister, as well as a Gilman Greyhound High School football coach. Ehrmann focuses on the boys’ standard criteria at the school, false masculinity, which he wants to tear down. He doesn’t want the young men to grow up and constantly compete with others for what they have, how successful they have been economically, or how their athletic abilities compare to others. Instead, Ehrmann wants them to grow up to be successful men who won’t feel isolated and destroy communities because of the false masculinity. His solution to stopping false masculinity is based on two things: relationships with others, and having a good cause other than you. “It [masculinity] should be defined in terms of relationships,” Ehrmann says. He believes that it comes down to how other people see you, not only family, but friends, and teammates. In conclusion, I believe that the Coach Ehrmann’s approach is a great approach because my high school football coach approached the situation the same way, which led to me being a better individual. I would brag about my athletic abilities in track and field because I didn’t think that there was anyone...

...successful effort to tell a story about a high school football team and the struggles they go through to win a grand championship. While telling this story, Bissinger is able to address a deeper message about an American addiction to football, and the toll that this takes on the players and students. Roaring crowds and team spirit fill the arena. The town revolves around football, to the point of obsession. When the star player, Boobie Miles suffers a leg injury, the town’s social issues begin to become noticed, and the team must work to achieve success in the Texas State Championships. Things such as the kind of car you have or the day you were born. I have had multiple concussions in my lifetime, all of them while playing football, I understand that football is America’s number one pastime sport and people enjoy it. But is the sport becoming too dangerous for our children to play with their delicate and developing brain? Concussions are a very hot topic right now in the world of football; many argue that the only way to prevent them is to terminate the sport completely. The NFL argue that there are many other way to prevent the injuries, such better head gear and penalties for head shots while playing. Still many concussions continue to happen, for example when the Carolina Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly came over the middle and hit a ballcarrier head first. He suffered a grade 1 concussion. Now I believe that no matter the ruler or amount of head gear the players have on concussions will always be in existence in the game of Football. That fact certain lawsuits that were filed against the NFL in previous year by former players, the NFL is now suspending and fining players who constantly...

...Setting: This memoir took place in a series of football fields of the opposing team, and occasionally at Harrison High School. Danny remembers his home field with the traditional two goal posts, and the marked white lines. They were marked every 10 yards, and unmistakable end zones. The scent of the locker room filled the air, and there was benches that we sat at. The bleachers are what held the fans, and kept our spirit up through bad times. Plot: A typical fifth grade boy had made the mistake of joining a football team thinking it was European Football. Throughout the season he struggled to understand the game of American Football, but he was a man of his word and didn’t quit. At the most important time, this boy understood the game completely and made an impact on his team. He drove his team straight to the Super Bowl, and was completely upset when they came up short to victory. He spent the next two years practicing on his own, to get ready for his last season of middle school football. This young inspiring boy stepped foot on that same field, knowing that this would be his last year of football. Everyday this boy had gone through pain, but his team was dominant. They had gone through every game with courage, and made it straight to the Super Bowl once again. Sadly, everything went wrong at the last moment, and they came up short once again. ...Luke Parrish Dr. Melinda McBee English 1301.HY7 2 November 2013 More Than a Game High school football is much more than just a game, and that is what many people do not understand. After the games people will say “It’s just a game, don’t be so hard on yourself,” but it is much more than that. Football is a way of life, especially in Texas. Football is a religion here and people take it very seriously. There is more to it than just the physical attributes needed to play. There is much more of a mental side to it as well as emotional. It is also very time consuming and many people fail to understand just how many hours’ football players and coaches put in throughout the week. The preparation starts in June the summer before the season. There are many different camps that the players need to attend if they want to get any playing time. These camps have vigorous lifting and running to try and work off the summer weight that most kids gain during high school. Many of the players are out of shape and this is the start of getting back into football shape. It is not mandatory to come to these different camps, but if a player wants to succeed and be a part of the team and get to play, it is expected to show up and put a face with a name. This is also a time when the relationships begin to build. Teammates begin to get comfortable with each other and get a grasp on what kind of player the other will be and they lay a foundation for that brotherhood that is going to become very...
