In the movie “The Fighter,” the addiction of drug abuse was addressed. The movie was based on a true story where two brothers named Dicky and Micky Ward were professional boxers. Dickey was the oldest and had his chance at the World Title to be the best boxer of all times. Unfortunately, Dickey got addicted to crack cocaine. Although the characters in the story never fully address his addiction because they pretend that it is not there. Their mother acts oblivious and surprised when she finds out close to the end of the movie. While Micky, was not really surprised.
Micky is an up and coming boxer who is trying to fight his way to the top with the help of his brother who is his trainer. However, Dicky doesn’t show up on time to train Micky and gets Micky into bad fights that he doesn’t have a chance to win because of the major weight difference. Through the beginning of the movie, a camera crew is following Dicky around. Dicky tells everyone that they are making a movie about his comeback even though he knows the film is about his addiction to crack. Dicky winds up in trouble with the police because he was pretending to be a police officer, stealing, and setting his girlfriend up as a prostitute to get money for more crack. When the police go to arrest Dicky, he runs away. Micky and the family are eating at a restaurant nearby when they find out that the police have caught Dicky. Micky runs out to see the police hitting his brother and tries to intervene and ends up getting his fighting hand broken by one of the police officers. They are both arrested but Dicky goes to prison because this wasn’t his first time getting in trouble with the law. Dicky ends up having to go through withdrawals in jail while Micky has to take a break from boxing until his hand heals.
Micky’s hand heals up after a few months around the time the film on Dicky is aired on television. This is when the family sees how Dicky is strung out on crack and is all upset and disappointed. Dicky is able to also watch the film in jail and is struck with emotion when he sees his little boy devastated by his father getting locked up. Micky decides to go seek out training elsewhere and go under new management under the condition that neither Dicky or his mother step in and get involved. Micky agrees and works his way up the latter winning matches when he ends up getting a big match around the time Dicky gets out of prison. Dicky returns to where Micky is being trained and expects to go back to training Micky himself as if nothing happened. Micky however, is still upset by Dicky’s actions and tells him about the agreement that was made. Dicky has to make things right with everyone so that he is able to help his brother win this big fight so he can receive the World Champion Title.
Dicky’s addiction physically affected his appearance as a whole. He is a lot smaller than he once was when he was healthy and boxing. His teeth were also badly damaged. Once Dicky goes to jail, he actually returned with new teeth because of the damage crack had done to them. The movie didn’t really address any long-term health problems, but I am sure he had something from being so strung out. As stated above, Dicky’s addictions affects his chance and reputation at boxing as well as his relationship with his brother Micky once it landed him in jail with a broken hand because of his brother’s choices.
From personal experience, there is never an easy was to confront the person with an addiction. You have to be stern, but also delicate at the same time. You don’t want to make the person with an addiction feel like they are being attacked because they may snap or lash out. If I had to confront Dicky based off of the scenario of the movie, I would explain to him that he was causing Micky to fail by not being available to train him or being in the right state of mind to set gin up with fair fights. I would address the unspoken issue of him hanging out in a known crack house and make sure I was there to help him through it and stay away from the influence. If I had to confront someone about addiction in my own life I would handle it similar, by shedding light on the situation. I will give a personal example of a way I addressed my first love when we were together. He had an addictive personality. For example, if he got prescribed medication he would want and need it for months at a time. If he smoked one cigarette he would smoke a pack a day for the next few months. We were together for 5 years and in those years he was addicted to tobacco, marijuana, prescription medication of all kinds, and alcohol. It was a never ending battle for me. I became the bad guy because once I would get him through one addiction, he would pick up another. In order to get him through each addiction I would have to express to him how lonely I felt and how much money he was spending. I would try to show him that I was upset and worried about him. Each and every day we would argue about how much less he would do that day. Every day I would try to make sure that he would cut back even more than the last day until eventually he didn’t feel like he needed it anymore. However, this meant I had to literally hover over and watch his every move. When he was at work, I worried if he would be doing drugs. It became almost too much for me to handle and I eventually had to call it quits because my own health was suffering from all of the energy and stress I had. It was a very toxic relationship and I wasn’t qualified to be able to keep him off of the drugs, smoking, and drinking.
There are many different treatments for people that suffer with an addiction. However, a treatment that would help you stop smoking wouldn’t also help a person stop drinking or doing drugs. If you wanted to stop drinking, you would need to join an Alcohol abuse group and have supported people around you. If you were trying to stop smoking there are nicotine patches and other types of medications you can get prescribed by a doctor. Not every treatment helps every individual. If you had an addiction to food, then you might go talk to a doctor and get put on a dietary supplement or on a diet as well as be made to exercise regularly. If someone is addicted to drugs, there is rehabilitation centers they can admit themselves or have someone else admit them in. There is even certain medication that could help with withdrawals from a drug they are trying to come off of such as methadone. If you or someone you know is struggling with an addiction, please talk to someone and get help.

Internet Addiction Essay

...Assignment 2.2 I believe the writer of Internet Addiction, Greg Beato intended on making his audience aware of how scary society is becoming with the strenuous need of internet and technology. Mr. Beato does a great job of pointing out several statistics, research, and even gives brief short stories that are funny, ridiculous, and also very sad that helps him accomplish catching the reader’s attention if not scaring them on how much we are becoming addicted to the internet. Mr. Beato also brings up addiction to gaming quite often throughout this article. Although the internet and gaming coincide with each other it seems he used one of these terrible stories to also touch base on his view of violent video games. I felt confused on his purpose at some parts of the article. Is it the video games or internet? Or maybe he was just using the claim of the “Xbox Shooter” to help scare the audience more on addiction. The article has many scare tactics that I thought went quite overboard. Statements such as “As the Internet weaves itself more and more tightly into our lives, only the Amish are completely safe.” Or that “Where employees who view porn at work are legally protected from termination.” Maybe Mr. Beato was just trying to be funny at these parts, but if he was then it was an “EPIC FAIL” as many gamers like myself would say. To me those scenarios are just very radical views. Mr. Beato does achieve a purpose, and makes many excellent points in the article. Not without making...

Psychological Model Of Addiction Essay

...In the Psychological model, the addiction was driven from stress. Guilt and shame were usually associated with the addiction, but other reasons while play a role in the addiction (Lewis, 2014). The client uses blame for using, like another person caused them to do self-medicate. Therapist may use behavior therapy, or use coping mechanisms to encourage a total recovery (Lewis, 2014). The psychological model suggests that the addiction is an individual program (Lewis, 2014). Within the Psychological model, drugs, like heroin, work to mimic the brains own chemicals because they activate neurons, which do not active neurons in the same way as they normal would, this leads to abnormal messages that are transmitted in your brain (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2014) Drugs, for example, Cocaine, can release neurotransmitters that prevent...

Richard Wood Addiction Essay

...are not enough alike (“Concept of Videogame ‘Addiction’” 170). His evidence for this is case studies in which he portrays familial strain and stress put on the gamer. This, he believes, leads many gamers to diagnose themselves as addicted when they may not be (176). Wood claims that clinicians and researchers should be cautious when claiming anyone is addicted because it may lead to misunderstandings and an undue amount of concern on the part of the family (176). Wood also believes those who are classified as “addicted” may be playing games excessively because they have underlying problems or poor time management skills (177). Wood does concede that some people play video games excessively is not in dispute, but defining the point at which the behaviour becomes problematic is far from clear. There is little doubt that some people play games too frequently and for longer periods than is good for them physically, socially, and/or psychologically” (172). Mark Griffiths refutes Wood’s position, stating that those who have underlying problems but are addicted to a substance have no less of an addiction because...

Topic Search Essay On Overcoming Addiction

...Tanisha Vaughn College Composition John Aramini November 6, 2015 Topic Search Paper Addiction has been a serious problem for many years. There are ways to overcome addiction, but only if one is willing to take the time to go through the tough steps. There are also various types of treatment that help cleanse an addict. They can check themselves into a clinical home as a way to help. There have been many occasions in which a drug addict goes through a cleansing process in order to get better, and have in fact made no progress whatsoever. Residential treatment programs have been proven to be very effective in the healing process but the effects are dissolved because of bad timing. Meaning that the treatment occurs way too early in the process. Person in Context of Changes

...ESSAY The course ‘Person in context of changes’ positively affected my outlook on the world. I did not use to ask myself philosophical questions because I am not much of a thinker. But I found that it is quite interesting and absorbing to rack my brain over freedom, trying to figure out whether it has positive or negative meaning. The most interesting thoughts were actually delivered by Jared Diamond, who is a modern scientist and who is looking solutions to eternal problems like collapses of civilizations from the angle of history and science. I became acquainted with his findings after reading about agricultural revolution. The humanity always tries to find these milestones in its history when it has chosen a certain direction. It I like a crossroads. Such a milestone is believed to be the year 1917 for Russia, when it has chosen the Communist path. In Diamond’s book I learnt about another milestone in the history of the whole planet. He actually doubted the widely accepted idea that life of humans improved greatly after it started developing agriculture. We were taught that after people started to crop plants they got more time for arts because there was now more time left to devote to hobbies. Diamond made counterarguments to these statements which amazed me. I found that my understanding of the world and history is very doubtful. Moreover, Diamond poses that people with its developed agriculture are more dependent on food than those who collected plants...

Are We to Blame for Obesity?

...Are We to Blame For Obesity? Fast food is becoming a major issue world-wide causing problems and disease such as obesity, asthma and diabetes. Fast food has become an addiction to almost the entire nation but who is to blame? In the articles, “Don’t Blame the Eater” by David Zinczenko and “What You Eat Is Your Business” by Radley Balko two different viewpoints are expressed on fast food and what it does to the individual as well as the economy. In the articles both authors show their awareness of the problem at hand but point the finger at two very different groups of people using factual and statistical evidence as well as personal opinions. Although both arguments are very valid, David Zinkzenko’s essay provides the reader with a lot more than opinion. The title in every essay brings it to life. A spunky title will keep your audience yearning to read what the writer has to say, while a boring title will readers doped up on energy drinks to get through what the writer has to say. David Zinczenko’s title, “Don’t Blame the Eater” catches the reader’s eyes. The title as a whole has the audience asking questions about the “eater”, and who blames them? However, the title of the second article, “What You Eat Is Your Business”, by Radley Blanko comes off as arrogant and insensitive to the reader. An example of a less arrogant title would be, “All You Can Eat”, this title would be more pleasing to the reader allowing them to imagine an all you can eat buffet. As a reader, I take immediate...

Liking Os for Cowards. Go for What Hurts

...What Hurts by Jonathan Franzen “Liking Is for Cowards. Go for What Hurts” is an essay by Jonathan Franzen. The essay was published May 2011 inside The New York Times. It is based on his speech at Kenyon College, Ohio, USA. This essay is about the contrast between peoples love for technology and real life. A very new and common expression is called “Like”. This originates from the social website, Facebook. This is mentioned as ”commercial subculture’s substitute for liking something. ”. Our parent’s generation has expressed popular terms. It is understandable, as we are entering a modern age, where everyone wants a little taste of this new world of technology we are entering. They are representing our era and the obsession with the Internet, smartphones and other things that contribute to the construction of our massive shield of technology. A lot of people use social media like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc. to express their emotions. It is an effortless way to hide from the actual issue and emotions that are inside you. Jonathan Frenzen thinks, that people have a desire for consumer technology. It gives them a different point of view, which in a way satisfies them, without giving them anything at all. It is a contrast to an actual relationship with a boyfriend or a girlfriend. The author, Jonathan Franzen, has a very creative and different way of capturing his readers.
