Addiction Counselor: Avoiding Burn Out

No matter the education and experience of a professional, the professional is unable to help others if they don’t first take care of themselves. Self-care burn out is prevalent in all fields of practice, however, it is especially prevalent in medical professionals who work in addiction counseling and treatment. We all know that addiction counselors need to be effective at diagnostic practices, be knowledgeable at the impact of addictions on other psychological and physical disorders, as well as understanding the criteria for disorders (“Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP),” 2009). What they don’t necessarily teach us in many textbooks though, is that in order to be effective, addiction counselors need to have quality self care plans in place. First, to prevent burn out, I will lean on my colleagues for guidance. Those in the areas of social work and addiction counseling are sometimes known to protect one another, even when they shouldn’t (“Interprofessional Clinical Supervision in Mental Health and Addiction: Toward Identifying Common Elements,” 2007). Sometimes, colleagues are even known to sweep the mistakes of one another under the rug, when they may have actually harmed a patient (“Interprofessional Clinical Supervision in Mental Health and Addiction: Toward Identifying Common Elements,” 2007). I very much do not want my colleagues to do that for me. If it appears that I am experiencing burn out and that my patients may be at risk as a result, I plan to have a close network of trusted colleagues in place to speak up and help me realize my own burn out. I plan to achieve this through open and honest dialogue about expectations with them prior to any type of burnout ever occurring. To avoid burn out in myself as
