Walker and Company’s first product, Bevel, a single blade shaving system combines the product design and packaging detail you would expect from the likes of Apple. The premium design of the razor and quality of the botanical oils, creams and accessories create a luxury shaving experience. Walker says he's addressing the problem of razor bumps, and skin irritation that affects up to 80% of African Americans, and up to 30% of people of other races. Silicon Valley companies are dominated by white, and Asian men, but Walker & Company Brands has only one white man on the 15-person staff. The staff is majority minority, and majority women — and that is by design. Walker says it's a comparative business advantage. "Our employee base really reflects the customers we want to serve," Walker said. "There is no shortage of research out there to suggest that more diverse teams lead to higher profits, and that is something we recognize in a very big way." Prior to his founding Walker & Company he was an Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Andreessen Horowitz. Prior to his time at Andreessen Horowitz, he was the Director of Business Development for foursquare, where he oversaw strategic partnerships, and

Colorism

...------------------------------------------------- COLORISM WURAOLA, MUHAMMED June 29, 2014 iNFORMATIVE SPEECH SPEECH 103 June 29, 2014 iNFORMATIVE SPEECH SPEECH 103 COLORISM I will inform the audience about colorism and the effect it has on African Americans today. I will discuss when and how colorism started, and how it affects the way you feel about yourself and the way you live your life. “If you’re black, stay back; if you’re brown, stick around; if you’re yellow, you’re mellow; if you’re white, you’re all right.” This is an old nursery rhyme sung by kids. These days you would probably see the same idea being expressed by African Americans themselves. There is only one ethnic group that acts as if light and dark skinned are two different nationalities. Which ethnic group, you ask. African-Americans. Colorism refers to discrimination based on skin color. Colorism disadvantages dark-skinned people, while privileging those with lighter skin. I have also experienced colorism. People of my own race, especially the men will treat you differently just based on the color of your skin, and I also used to wish I was lighter. This topic may relate to you because colorism may exist in other cultures too, like Vietnam and India. I will discuss when and how colorism started, and how it affects the way you feel about yourself and the way you live your life. This brings us to how colorism started. Gray’s book provides a very informative study, but if you’re looking for more information, check out James Jones’ Bad Blood. Gray takes a lot of information from this book which was written about 20 years before his. When searching the web for information on the Tuskegee Syphilis Study, the results were quite slim. Most of the results involved syllabi for college classes or websites much like our own that were prepared for a class. The website that I reviewed is from the Tuskegee University National Center for Bioethics, which was actually created from President Clinton’s apology and ideas for improvement of racial relations and medical testing. The webpage’s main purpose is to educate the public about the atrocities that were performed on African-Americans in the Tuskegee Syphilis Study, and to help prevent an event like this from ever happening again The Tuskegee Syphilis Study by Fred D. Gray examines a medical study that occurred in Tuskegee, Alabama which dealt with monitoring African-American subjects discover the effects of untreated syphilis. ...you want to sustain the conviction, make the best argument you can for how that can be reconciled with the First Amendment. Of the opinions that would have sustained the conviction, which do you find most persuasive and why? Texas v. Johnson, 491 U.S. 397 (1989), was an important decision by the Supreme Court of the United States that invalidated prohibitions on desecrating the American flag enforced in 48 of the 50 states. Justice William Brennan wrote for a five-justice majority in holding that the defendant Gregory Lee Johnson's act of flag burning was protected speech under the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. Gregory Lee "Joey" Johnson, then a member of the Revolutionary Communist Youth Brigade, participated in a political demonstration during the 1984 Republican National Convention in Dallas, Texas. The demonstrators were protesting the policies of the Reagan Administration and of certain companies based in Dallas. They marched through the streets, shouted chants, and held signs outside the offices of several companies. At one point, another demonstrator handed Johnson an American flag stolen from a flagpole outside one of the targeted buildings. When the demonstrators reached Dallas City Hall, Johnson poured kerosene on the flag and set it on fire. During the burning of the flag, demonstrators shouted such phrases as, "America, the red, white, and blue, we spit on you, you stand for plunder, you will go under," and, "Reagan, Mondale, which will it be?...

The African-American's History in America

...The African American’s History in the United States 1865-Present Gina R. Carter Hist:204 Instructor Ronnie Peacock April 8, 2013 The African American’s struggles have been many as well as continuous throughout the centuries. However, this race despite the trials and tribulations thrown at them, stood fast when faced with adversity, discrimination, oppression and segregation. They are a people once condemned by the country that stole their heritage and identity, forced them into slavery and labeled then subhuman. After imprisonments, the loss of lives, much sacrifice and an undeniable refusal of contentment, they are now America’s doctors, lawyers, priests, educators, judges and Secretary of State. From slavery to the White House, the African American took control over its fate and today continues to orchestrate its own destiny. After many years of involuntary servitude, beating, rapes and hangings, the Thirteenth Amendment was ratified on December 6, 1865, stating, "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States.", the African American slave finally had a taste of freedom, so he thought. Even though the Thirteenth amendment was the Constitutional end of slavery in the United States, this was not the end of slavery. Instead the American southern states introduced slavery by another name. American History 1865-Present | End of Isolation states;...

Multiple Sclerosis

...Nicole Smith @02659641 Informative Speech Multiple sclerosis (MS) includes an immune-mediated process in which a strange reaction of the body's immune system is steered against the central nervous system. Inside the central nervous system, the immune system assaults myelin, and in addition the nerve strands. The damaged myelin structures scar tissue called sclerosis, hence where the disease receives its name. At the point when any piece of the myelin sheath or nerve fiber is harmed or decimated, nerve driving forces heading out to and from the brain and spinal cord are contorted or interfered with, creating a wide mixture of symptoms. In 1868, Jean-Martin Charcot, an educator at the University of Paris, precisely analyzed a young woman with a tremor of a sort he had never seen previously and inspected her brain and discovered the trademark scars or "plaques" of MS. Multiple sclerosis was formally perceived as an illness in its own particular right in the 1870s by Dr. Walter Moxen in England and Dr. Edward Seguin in New York. A standout amongst the most paramount catalysts in the battle against MS was made when the National Multiple Sclerosis Society was established in 1946 (Roth). While the reason for MS is still unknown, researchers believe that the connection of a few distinctive variables may be included. Approximately more than 400,000 individuals in the United States and around 2.5 million individuals around the world have Multiple Sclerosis. MS is known to happen all...

When I took a trip to Britain, I thought people would speak with a “British accent.” I didn’t realize that there are many different accents and the differences are not just pronunciation, but also vocabulary. In order to get my message across, I learned to avoid using slang words as much as I could. I didn’t realize how much American slang I use in my everyday speech! Despite the many different ways of speaking English across the UK, I felt the way that I speak English made me stick out as an American. When elected officials make a speech or comment about our current state of education, they do not encourage students to read Plato, Descartes, or even the Federalist Papers, instead our government is encouraging students to become increasingly experienced in math and computers and other STEM programs, or else foreign countries will steal all of our jobs and advance in front of America when it comes to education.
