In the film, The 400 Blows Antoine is no stranger to punishment. Antoine's engulfed in controversy and punishment from the beginning. Although he is not the only troubled and misguided child in his class, he is the only child being publicly punished harshly. These circumstances, in essence, cultivate a poor environment for Antoine's growth and maturity. Therefore, Antoine becomes a juvenile delinquent because he lacks an adult mentor.

He is mean, negative, quick-tempered, verbally abusive and lacks leadership. In the class poem recital scene, the teacher's class is out of control. In a fit of rage, he accuses a random student of misconduct without having any proof. During the violent outburst, he insult's the class. He calls them all idiots and cowards. In his disdain for the students, he further humiliates Antoine for not properly cleaning the wall. Antoine's teacher does not have any patience. He definitely does not have any reservations about being a good mentor to Antoine. In another scene, the teacher takes the students out for a jog around the town. The teacher doesn't even notice that his students are running off course and out of his sight. This shows his lack of leadership and ability to properly supervise children. In another particular interaction between Antoine and his teacher, Antoine is again severely publicly humiliated by his teacher. The teacher mocks Antoine for writing a false story about his dead grandfather in reference to Antoine's previous story of his mother's death. He also accuses Antoine of plagiarism without ever explaining to Antoine what plagiarism is nor how he committed plagiarism on his essay. He failed to tell Antoine a correct way to complete the assignment. He once again loses his patience and harshly punishes Antoine by suspending him for the rest of the semester.
