There is little dissertation, however, regarding how race and culture, as organizational forces, affect the amount to which African American students are justifiably embodied in the arena of gifted education. Most of minority students are automatically denied the benefits of a lot of programs. Charles Dervarics (2011) stated “Despite the best efforts of America’s educators to bring greater equity to our schools, too many children — especially low-income and minority children — are still denied the educational opportunities they need to succeed,” Russlynn Ali, U.S. assistant secretary of education for civil rights, says in a news statement (Dervarics,2011). Despite this interest, the underachievement of gifted students remains an enigma. (Institute,2000). African American who underachieve in some aspect of school recital, whose abilities may surpass the boundaries of what is normally protected in the typical course also have a right to an education that matches their potential and talents. Making sure a program for gifted students may need to modify its structure to encounter these students' precise knowledge needs. With that being said, this is desirable to denying gifted children access to educational services that are the most helpful to their capabilities. Underachievement is linked closely to self-perception progress. Students who absorb to see themselves in standings of disappointment ultimately begin to place self-executed restrictions of what is imaginable. However, it has become institutionalized; it is hidden deep inside society. Many Black Americans live in poor communities. Therefore, they attend poorly equipped and worn out schools. During this time black people were forced to live in a world of prejudice, discrimination, poverty and suppression. The life of a black person was very difficult; many opportunities afforded to whites were not afforded to blacks. Sonny and his brother lived in the projects and had many obstacles to overcome that white people didn't have to. Sonny chose music to outwardly express his suffering, his brother chose to bottle it up and keep it inside, but this is the common thread they both shared. Suffering is also shown in the story when Baldwin says "it came to me that what we both were seeking through our separate cab windows was that part of ourselves which had been left behind" (P 47).
