The story moves forward with Alina’s ascent to power and her eventual downfall, and her last battle with the Darkling. Bardugo writes both novels in first-person narrative which allows the readers to explore the fantasy world, and learn and experience with Alina. Bardugo also uses the motif of darkness vs. light throughout both novels to symbolize the suffering that war brings, and the hope that everyone clings to. In Shadow and Bone, Bardugo highlights the dominant theme of war by making it the driving force behind the actions of the...

...According to the “Leadership Self-Assessment” my leadership style is transformational and charismatic (Media.capella.edu, 2015). The “transformational leadership theory-assume the fact that people will follow a person who inspires them, a person with vision and passion who can lead them in the wright direction, and can help them achieve great things” (Alina, 2013, p. 210). The major premise of the charismatic leadership theory is “beliefs imparted to followers” (Media.capella.edu, 2015). I believe the leadership characteristics most dominant for me are those of the transformational leader: “charismatic, inspirational, role model, enabler” (Media.capella.edu, 2015). I might integrate other leadership characteristics into my style to...

...Popular Girls by Karen Shephard ------------------------------------------------- We are immediately introduced to five girls in Popular Girls written by Karen Shepard. The five girls, Kaethe, Alina, CJ, Sydney and Stephanie, in Popular Girls have very few physical descriptions. They are only described by their hair as being straight and every colour but red. ------------------------------------------------- With sentences as “we do not notice you15” and “we have seen the theater teacher looking at them. We are not shocked. We are not surprised26” (about their breasts) we can assume, that they have plenty of confidence. But even though, they may seem confident on their outside, their confidence is put on the line, when they meet three men, that they are all interested in. ------------------------------------------------- Suddenly, their worth is in competition, and they see one by one, who is the most wanted. Their confidence is peeled down. ------------------------------------------------- They have an usual formation then they walk. Stephanie is always first, then comes Sydney and Alina and at last Kaethe and CJ. ------------------------------------------------- When it comes to conquest the men, they are not in the same order and position. CJ gets home with Pablo, because of CJ’s lack of consciousness. Sydney gets Gilles when they get home to the three boys, and only Antoine is left with no girl. ------------------------------------------------- “We like...

...Have you ever attempted accomplishing multiple tasks all at once and lose focus on what you were doing? Are you listening to music, shouting at your siblings or children, online shopping, checking emails, and texting friends and wondering why you’re still stuck writing your first paragraph in your essay for an hour now? Multitasking may seem like a simple tool to use to accomplish numerous tasks at once; however, that essay may have already been completed if you were to simply focus on one task at a time. Is all the multitasking even worth it at this point? Multitasking can be a wonderful tool in certain people’s eyes, but it can be deleterious to the task at hand. “Multitasking Can Make You Lose…Um…Focus” is an article written by Alina...

She was able to mirror Imperial Russia just the right amount to impress me and help me to better visualize Ravka, yet not enough to where it lost the fantasy aspect. I also enjoyed the flow and pace of the plot. There was action right from the start, which for me really helps to grab my attention and keeps me interested. Yet, it did slow down enough throughout that you didn’t feel like you were just jumping from one scene to the next (I absolutely hate when that happens). Don’t worry about getting bored though, there’s so much to the story that it will keep you turning page after page to see what happens next! Alina. Where do I even begin? She’s the...

...Multitasking is not something new to today’s modern society. We as people believe by doing multiple things at a time is faster and more of an effective way of doing things. In Alina Tugend’s New York Times article “Multitasking Can Make You Lose…Umm…Focus,” she explains that multitasking serves otherwise. She informs that it does more harm to our brain and body by causing us to lose focus and dividing our brains attention span in a way it was not meant to. Being an eighteen year old part time employee and full time student I found I could relate very well to this article. Therefore this reading needs to be featured in IVYT 101 course to ensure students like me, a safe and effective way through college. Edward M. Hallowell, a psychiatrist and author of “CrazyBusy: Overstretched, Overbooked, and About to Snap!” indicates “Multitasking is shifting focus from one task to another in rapid succession. It gives the illusion that we’re simultaneously tasking, but we’re really not. It’s like playing tennis with three balls.” (Tugend 714). When I’m stressed I tend to get anxious and lose focus wherein I try to take some of the work load of my shoulders, I’m sure others do this too, to do so I switch from one thing to another hoping to get something done ahead of time, which in reality never happens. As Edward Hallowell comments “you have to keep in mind that you sacrifice focus when you do this,” (Tugend 714). Most people know that focus is key to any accomplishment, if one do not focus...

...back to the day of the Farewell of HSC Batch '12. After the official announcement, the newly formed executive panel of year 2012-13 was practically beaming at each other, secretly making a promise of a great time that was to follow. Actually, everyone but Shorna. She was happily posing for photos when we literally had to beg her to join the team, when she decided to take mercy on us ... Because without her Graphics would have been meaningless. Alina, Nuzhat, Bushra, Parisa, Prianta, Samira, Tahsin, Shorna and I - the team was now officially complete. It was a good time that VELC gave us. Personally, I would say it was not just good, it was great. When you work in a team, it is not just work. You spend time with your team, you smile with them, you laugh with them and if you are lucky enough, you also cry buckets of happy tears with them and also on their shoulders. And in this scenario, I was very lucky. Prianta, Parisa, Samira, Shorna, Tahsin and Nuzhat – I have known them since forever. But this club gave me wonderful friends like Alina and Bushra too. How else would I have known chasing Bushra across the campus with a camera pointed at her would be so much fun? Just so you know, I never really posted those weird pictures. One of the main reasons VELC holds incredible sentimental value for...

...be careful with details, don’t like interruptions, like to think a lot before they act, work confidently alone, therefore; they thrive in positions that require attention to details, reflection and fore thinking (Alina Vrabie, 2013). Conscientiousness is the degree to which an individual is responsible, thorough, organized, hard-working and results-oriented (Behling 1998, 5). There is a relation between conscientiousness and job performance; employers desire to hire workers who are conscientious as they can create environments in which they can achieve positive outcomes, they follow the rules, have low tendency to procrastinate, exercise more restraint (Fayard 2012, 6-8). Conscientiousness and Extraversion are somewhat interconnected as high extraversion predicted low fear of social evaluation or less social anxiety (Behl 1997, 40), individuals high in conscientiousness have high tendency to overwork and tolerate discomfort and frustration in order to complete tasks (Behl 1997, 7). While well job performance is largely predicted by conscientiousness, employers must use a precise matching approach and find good methods to measure conscientiousness and extroversion and their relevance to the role on hand (Behling 1998, 81-82).
