...Todd and Amy Case Study (Title IX) For the case involving Todd Martin and Amy Craft, I think that both of them are at fault in this predicament. During my time in college I have witnessed situations of the sort. It never turns out pretty but regret is basically guaranteed. As an adult you have to be responsible for your actions and that includes knowing your alcohol and moral limits. I don’t necessarily agree with Todd’s conviction; I don’t think charges should have even been placed against Todd. I don’t feel I have enough information to make a guilty conviction for one specific participant. This could easily be a false accusation or Todd could have had sex with Amy without her full or conscious consent. I feel that a resolution to the situation that would be fair to all parties would be to learn from this matter. They both were being irresponsible; Amy could have monitored her drinking better and Todd could have called campus police for assistance in getting Amy home. Both of them should bare minimum have to speak with a campus counselor. This situation could also allow either of them to participate in some awareness classes whether they be alcohol awareness or sexual abuse/discrimination awareness classes. This could even drive Amy (or Todd if he felt so inclined) to maybe start a club/group on campus for other females and even males who feel they have been a victim of rape or participated in over consumption of alcohol leading to questionable decision making skills. Amy’s...

...After reading the novel “The Wave” by Todd Strasser the theme of leadership was most prevalent because, without leadership, the book wouldn’t have taken the same course it did. Throughout the book, almost every character showed leadership. For example, when the wave started David showed leadership because he got the football team to practice like the wave did. Furthermore, when David told the football team about the wave, he told them with confidence and showed leadership qualities likes showing initiative. Likewise, Laurie showed leadership by exposing the negative side of the wave through her school newspaper “The Grapevine.” Moreover, this shows how leadership is such an important theme because without Laurie's leadership the book wouldn’t...

...THE NEGATIVE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATIONS OF THE ATHABASCA OIL SANDS “The modern era began with the discovery that started the most brilliant, inventive, and destructive age in the history of mankind. The age of energy.” The Athabasca oil sands were founded in the late 1960s and have now developed into a major player within the Canadian economy, acting as its prominent supplier of crude oil. With roughly 2.5 trillion barrels of oil in the ground, the oil sands are one of the largest deposits in the world. However, a problem arises with the extraction process, as it is both expensive and cumbersome with the presence of bitumen within the oil (a highly viscous, black hydrocarbon). Therefore, the extensive extraction process that is required by oil mining companies leads to negative environmental implications. As a result, this paper will discuss the extent of these environmental implications in terms of escalating greenhouse gas emissions, the depletion and contamination of water reserves, and the destruction of terrestrial ecosystems within the Boreal forest. In addition to this, the underlying notion of Alberta’s unlikely future for a sustainable environment. Greenhouse gases (GHG) are emissions within the atmosphere that absorbs and emit radiation, thus damaging the ozone layer. Taking this into consideration, the expansionary development associated with the Athabasca oil sands are rapidly increasing the level of pollution emitted within Canada. The oil sands alone are a...

...ADN or BSN What’s the Real Difference? Amy Dubois Great Bay Community College ADN or BSN What’s the Real Difference? The writer will briefly discuss the pros and cons of an ADN vs. BSN for entry level nursing. The primary difference in background between the 2 degrees are 3 nursing classes : nursing theory, research and finance. Many fingers point at the rapid changes and complexities in the healthcare system that have made BSN and higher degrees a more desirable title to hold. However, the associate degree of nursing curriculum provides for attainment of knowledge and skills set in the current practice of nursing, community concepts, health care delivery, critical thinking, communications, therapeutic interventions, and current trends in health care (Todd Van Wieran & Christine Reid, 2007). A big pro with the ADN is that in most places, this is the requirement. Whether there is another candidate applying for the same position with a BSN is another story. Many widely accredited nursing organizations such as the American Association of Nurse Life Care Planners ( AANLCP), Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse (CRRN), American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants (AALNC) , the American Board of Nursing Specialties (ABNS), along with several others have all agreed on one thing. They all state “no stance advertisement about the minimal level of nursing preparation required for entry into professional practice, other than the implicit fact that they focus...

...MISSION To connect people with trusted breast cancer information and a community of support. VISION A world where no one impacted by breast cancer feels uninformed or alone. HISTORY & COMMUNITY SERVED LBBC was founded in 1991 by radiation oncologist Marisa C. Weiss, MD, in response to a woman's need for breast-cancer-related information, connection and support after completing treatment. In our early years, Dr. Weiss ran LBBC out of the third floor of her home using volunteers. Few resources existed for women affected by breast cancer, and LBBC focused exclusively on the post-treatment experience. In 1996, Jean A. Sachs, MSS, MLSP, became Living Beyond Breast Cancer’s first executive director (now chief executive officer). Ms. Sachs has increased LBBC’s budget from $100,000 to more than $4 million per year, increased the size of the staff and expanded our programs and services. Today, LBBC has expanded to assist women at all stages of diagnosis, treatment and recovery. Our mission includes offering specialized programs and services for the newly diagnosed, young women, women with advanced breast cancer, women at high risk for developing thedisease, and African-American women. We also offer programs for caregivers and healthcare professionals to help them better meet the needs of women affected by breast cancer. ...Amy Alba Professor White ENG 111/ENF 3 28 October 2013 Education Has a New Face A revolution in education caused by the expansion of what is called Massive Open Online Courses, or MOOCs, has brought change to higher education. MOOCs are online courses that are provided by some of the world’s prestigious universities, such as Stanford and Harvard, and that offer high quality learning at no cost. MOOCs classes are available for anyone around the globe with an access to the internet and a smart phone, tablet, or a computer. This phenomenon has spread in the virtual world and found success, and like any new concept, it will have side effects in which will be positive, such as spreading education, and negative, such as posing a threat to other education institutes. Internet revolution is the major cause of the expansion of the MOOCs. Tim Todd, education editor at the Financial Review, stated that “The internet revolution has moved to education as top universities worldwide rush to put free courses online, setting up so-called massive open online courses or MOOCs.” The internet is the median that is facilitating the access to MOOCs by students that are located anywhere on the planet. The barriers of time zone, geographical distant, and financial status have been reduced in the way of education. The way MOOCs are presented and accessed caused thousands of students worldwide to sign up and join the education train. Some of the top universities in the US realized the potential...

...STRAYER UNIVERSITY | LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE ANALYSIS | ASSIGNMENT 1 | | Ms. Erica M Faison | 1/24/2014 | Professor Andre Lee Leadership and Conflict Resolution Conduct research and write an 850- to 1000-word essay (2-3 pages, excluding the title and references pages) that discusses the statement: “Young public leaders are usually less effective because they have so little experience.” | “You do not lead by hitting people over the head -- that's assault, not leadership.” ― Dwight D. Eisenhower One of the many things I have learned about being a leader is experience is the best teacher. But when you are young and a leader you don’t have that experience under your belt yet so what you need is for people to trust that you know what you are doing. And you need the courage and confidence to know who you are. I agree with the fact that young public leaders are usually less effective because they have so little experience but I also know that there needs to be a few bruises in order to perfect your skill. For example, in the world today we have a lot of public figures who may not qualified for their position but they are young and they have the energy to maintain. The first example would be Chelsea Clinton who is the daughter of former U.S. President Bill Clinton and former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. She is a special correspondent for NBC News and works with the Clinton Foundation and Clinton Global Initiative. Can you imagine the responsibility...

...Clivio 1 Thomas Clivio Professor Marie Salamone College Writing I October 17, 2012 Dangers of Texting With the advent of the cell phone came a new means of social media and communication called texting. But with all the benefits an emerging technology can offer, we can’t always predict what the impact will be on our society. This new form of communicating brought with it its own dialogue as well as its own dangers. We’ve seen an increase in accidents caused by distracted teen drivers who were texting, a new medium of bullying in our schools, and the newest trend that’s become popular with teens and young adults known as “sexting”. As cell phones become more popular, and the age of cell phone users gets younger and younger, so will the person who will be exposed to sexting. As our younger generation gets ever more influenced by the proliferation of sexually explicit images in the media and scantily dressed celebrities, the more difficult the job of a parent will become. How many more teens need to die from texting while driving or from committing suicide after sexting provocative images before we recognize this growing problem? With the introduction of texting to our youth and the impact it has on our society, we have been presented with a whole new set of concerns and it is clear that these concerns need to be addressed. The first forewarning of the dangers this new form of communication presented, came in the increase of distracted driver fatalities. The...

...OPERANT CONDITIONING, A THEORY DEVELOPED BY B.F. SKINNER Dating back to the 1800’s, many theories have developed in reference to Child Development. There have been theories that have become classics and those that continue to cause controversy. Doing research on these theories one of them really stood out to me and that is the one of B.F. Skinner. Skinner believed that the best way to understand behavior is to look at the causes of an action and its consequences. He called this approach operant conditioning. The main principles of operant conditioning, as defined by Skinner, are reinforcement, punishment, shaping, extinction, discrimination, and generalization. Reinforcement is the key element in Skinner's theory. A reinforcement is any characteristic in the environment that serves to increase the probability that a person will repeat a behavior in the future. It could be verbal praise, a good grade or a feeling of increased accomplishment or satisfaction (Cook). An example of a positive reinforcement is a child receives their report card and brings it home to mom and dad. The child received four “A’s” and one “B”. For every “A” received the parents reinforce that child with money. In middle school “A’s” are worth twenty dollars each but moving into high school they are worth fifty dollars each. This child will be highly motivated to bring home as many “A’s” as they can! What happens when that reinforcer does not work? That is when the next element in Skinner’s theory comes...

...Haynes’ Far from Heaven and Sirk’s All That Heaven Allows. Jack Post Abstract Although Douglas Sirk’ All That Heaven Allows (1954) and Todd Haynes’ Far from Heaven (2002) are both characterized as melodramas, they address their spectators differently. The divergent (emotional) reactions towards both films are the effect of different rhetorical strategies: the first can be seen a typical example of baroque discourse and the latter as a specimen of mannerist discourse. The reference to the terms melodrama, mannerism and baroque does not imply that these films are just formal repetitions of historical periods or that they thematically and structurally refer to historical styles, but that they are characterized by opposing discursive strategies which came to the foreground in a specific historical time and constellation. Because these discursive strategies return in other historical periods and socialpolitical circumstances in different guises and with different aims, they can be compared to what Aby Warburg calls Pathosformeln (pathos formula). The expressive forms, gestures and discursive modes of melodrama, baroque and mannerism can thus be understood as transhistorical (gestural) languages of pathos that recur in history. Résumé Bien que All that heaven allows (1954) par Douglas Sirk et Far from heaven (2002) par Todd Haynes se caractérisent nettement comme un mélodrame, les deux films adressent leur public de manière fondamentalement différente. La divergence...
