In the final section composing of 7 essays, my favorite would be Rock of Ages. Didion visits the infamous Alcatraz Island, which used to house some of the most notorious criminals in the country. Only 3 people are currently living on the island, great sacrifices have to be made while working on this island, “covered with flowers now: orange and yellow nasturtiums, geraniums, sweet grass, blue iris, black-eyed Susans” as Didion describes the island peacefully and positively. With her visit, Didion is able to picture some of the history of the prisoners. Through her visit she describes Alcatraz as a peaceful place but for prisoners it was a prison, “any child could imagine.” In this essay, Didion is able to incorporate the use of ethos throughout
