...Chapter II REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE FOREIGN REFERENCE The questions which teachers ask during class periods constitute a concrete expression of the educational objectives which they are day by day setting for their students. The questions of the final examinations should, therefore, be representatives of the types of educational objectives set in the different school subjects. The emphasis upon memory and some of the simpler types suggests a need for a modification in emphasis in most of the school subject. Frequently all questions are considered as belonging to one of two groups, “thought questions” or “memory questions”. Such a definite classification is not, however, always possible. The character of the mental process involved in answering depends upon the person replying as well as upon the form of the question asked. Those questions calling for definite facts are almost certain to be based upon memory; on the other hand, those requiring classification, evaluation, contrast, etc. are likely to demand thought on the part of most students. If, however, such classification or evaluations have been made in a previous class exercise some students may easily remember the answers and, in such a case, a thought question for one student becomes a memory question for another. (Monroe, 1923) Hence, the academic performance of a student mostly depend on his/her evaluation in exam. Students excel on either one of the two types or both. But oftentimes, examinees encounter...

...In the article "Two Cheers for Examinations," author and former English teacher, Joy Alonso, discusses the pros and cons of examinations in two to four year colleges. Alonso notes that, though not loved by students, examinations serve two purposes. The first purpose is to assess how well a student is doing in a given course, and the second is to encourage learning of the broader topic. Alonso explains that the first goal of most examinations is to see the level of student achievement for various rewards such as honors within the institution. The second purpose is to make the student connect the smaller topics and comprehend what the larger ideas are. She notes that students feel a greater sense of achievement from examinations than from papers, however exams are not without flaws. Factors such as the teacher/professor's mood when correcting, and how far into the stack the grader is, can give some students an unfair advantage. Exams can also point out flaws of the instructor, which make them an even more useful tool. The article shows that though there are drawbacks, exams are a useful tool for students and instructors as each one can evaluate his/herself. Joy Alonso aims to show the place of examinations in collegiate courses, through a series of pro and con analysis. In the beginning of her argument, she explains, in detail, the way an examination fulfills the two purposes of tracking achievement and encouraging learning. The first purpose serves both the students and the...

...The innocent lives of animals are at stake every day when they need help or are in need of medical attention. The one important person for an animal who plays an essential role in their health and welfare is the veterinarian. Vets are well-versed in the science of animal health, and they promote public health by identifying and preventing diseases, which some can be passed to humans as well. The variety of animals that a veterinarian will treat, and the animal’s inability to communicate symptoms, make the veterinarian profession more challenging than the practice of human medicine. “If having a soul means being able to feel love and loyalty and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans” (Herriot, 233). Animals love with no...
