Starbucks is the largest coffeehouse company in the world and originates from Seattle, Washington. The first Starbucks was opened in Seattle on March 30, 1971. The three founders met while they were students at the University of San Francisco: English teacher Jerry Baldwin, history teacher Zev Siegl, and writer Gordon Bowker. The founders were inspired by Alfred Peet, coffee roasting entrepreneur, to sell his high-quality coffee beans and equipment. Since the first Starbucks opening in 1971, 18,065 stores have followed. Starbucks is the premier roaster, marketer and retailer of specialty coffee in the world, operating in 60 countries. Starbucks is also a very profitable company; it has steadily made money each year since 2008 and has been increasing the amount of money made each year substantially. Last year, 2012, Starbucks had almost two billion dollars in profit, which is almost four times as much as what they made it 2008. This increase in income was caused by the massive growth of the company and all the new coffeehouses being opened in emerging markets such as China and Japan. On top of record high profits Starbucks also had record high profit margins, being 15%, so every one dollar in revenue they received they made fifteen cents off that dollar. Starbucks came out with a lot of new innovations such as Starbucks’ own coffee brewer for the home, the Verissimo. Also new varieties of drinks and food were introduced that provide the customer with more variety and choices, which generate more revenue.

The ready to eat cereals first appeared in the late 1800’s when a group of vegetarians wanted to expand their food options and decided to create the wheat and corn flakes. It wasn´t until 1906 that Kellogg’s Co. entered the market and has stayed latent through many generations until these days. It is interesting that it survived two world wars and the depression of the United States in the 1930’s. Walmart

...| Walmart | | | | | Danielle S Holley | 11/28/2011 | | Firms choose from different business-level strategies in order to proposer in today’s markets. One of these being the Cost Leadership Strategy, an integrated set of actions taken to produce goods or services with features that are acceptable to customers at the lowest cost, in comparison to their competitors. Firms that chose to use this strategy must sell standardized goods and services which have to also include competitive levels of differentiation to the market’s regular customers. Cost leaders have to examine all support activities to find extra resources in order to cut production costs allowing them to maintain low costs for their customers. In any industry fixed and variable costs can cause companies to go out of business. Cost Leadership Strategy can put a strain on companies because they have to keep developing new technology that can support low cost goods and services (with differentiation) as well as low production costs to satisfy the needs of customers in the market place. Using this strategy effectively can earn firms above-average returns in spite of rivals in the industry. Having the low-cost position in an industry is valuable way to deal with competitors. The cost leader’s strategic position causes competitors to think twice before they compete on the basics of price and technology against the potential outcomes of such competition (Hitt). Starbucks During Xxi Century

After consulting with experts, McDonald’s has agreed to seek their expansion into Colombia, South America. Their goal is to enter the Colombian marketplace and offer the McDonald’s experience to the Colombian people and market. Many countries already enjoy the McDonald’s experience and famous food products that are eventually adopted as staples in their fast food runs- no matter the country. McDonald’s has been successful in entering foreign markets and adapting their business to local markets and have the local population call McDonald’s their own versus an American product that has come to their country. This is one of the keys to the success that McDonald’s has mastered. Naturally, they have the resources, monetary and information power to enter foreign markets, however there are some attributes that Colombia has that must be taken in to consideration. Columbia is considered an emerging market in the world’s view and the best strategy for McDonald’s to enter their marketplace should be a intelligently strategic one. II.
