Assess The Role Of Art In Christian Public Worship

A prefatory question has to be asked in order to assess the role that art has played in the history of Christian public worship: what is art? Or, more specifically, what is categorised as art in the context of the titled task above.

In his book ‘Introduction to Christian Worship’, White puts art into two broad categories: Religious and Liturgical. For his definitions of art, White draws on the work of Tillich. He surmises the term Religious art as ‘any art that had a dimension of depth, penetrating beneath superficial observation’. Considered a surmising and not a summary because it would be near impossible to definitively prove art as lacking in depth. In addition, this is partly due to a definition that implies the art under consideration …show more content…
The important conclusion however is that, in order to assess correctly the role of art in Christian public worship, from this point forward, all art discussed should be consciously considered as being liturgical art, even if the reader considers the subject to be otherwise. This conclusion allows us to consider the impact of the art within set parameters: ‘when we enter a church building we enter a symbolic world. There we find symbolic objects, and perhaps more importantly, those who participate in worship are caught up in intentionally symbolic actions’. While not all Christian public worship throughout history has taken place within the confines of a building, the impact of liturgical art must be examined within the understanding that for someone, in some place, the art being studied has played a role in a connection to God and expression of …show more content…
The different images within the catacombs must have played a role in any worship that took place on some level. With images of biblical stories containing themes of deliverance, salvation, sacrifice. Even if the only services were funerals or ones of remembrance, these images must have provoked some response, ‘the experience of worship is closely bound up with the ambience in which it takes place and the visual impact of its setting’. The images could be considered to bring hope and hint towards the life everlasting. ‘In the catacomb frescos of the Jonah cycle, the last scene generally shows Jonah lying nude under a vine. The unbiblical nudity of the figure would be inexplicable unless we recognized [sic.] it as a symbol of the resurrected body in paradise’. The catacombs contained various artistic renditions that when combined with burial of the dead may have encouraged Christians to reflect on the promises of God; the potential suffering or sacrifice of faith; the promise of eternal life. These reflections and the quantity of art surely point towards the conclusion that art played a significant role in the worship of the early church. This is a conclusion that is supported by Lowrie in his summary of catacomb/sepulchre art: ‘There it sprang up and developed as a spontaneous expression of the Christian faith and hope. If it had not gained so early a foothold in the cemeteries, the Church, we may

My World View

...worldview are God, ethics, and spiritual knowledge - because they play a vital role in all my thoughts, experiences, and life decisions. Putting God first in my life is at times quite difficult. For a Christian, it may be the most difficult thing to do. As an indication of faith it’s probably designed to be difficult. God has immense knowledge to communicate to each one of us, but He must always be put first in our lives if we are to obtain the knowledge. Since I’ve learned to view my life from God's endless perception it has become easier to comprehend what will last eternally and what will be demolished. My faith in a loving and forgiving God plays an imperative part in my day to day life. Throughout my life, being a Christian and living out my faith has been difficult and demanding. The people of this world do not always respect the ones who take a stand and do the right thing. The normal thing to do is to portray the ways of the world. The world encourages you to do what feels right and look out for one’s own self. In law enforcement there are always times when I will have to choose between my code of ethics and the police subculture ways of conducting ethical dilemmas or other given situations. The benefit of being a Christian police officer is that even when I don’t have a partner, the Holy Spirit never leaves my side. Everyday ethical dilemmas can test any individual in every way imaginable. If a Christian officer goes to God in prayer through a certain predicament, they will...

Law Review

...discrimination against religious minorities. Over time, Canada’s legal and societal approach to creed rights has evolved significantly. However, it continues to be one of, if not the, most complex and controversial area of rights law. Perhaps more than any other ground in human rights codes, creed rights tend to give rise to strong opinions, even among those who may not otherwise have much to say about human rights. Everything from what is creed (and what beliefs and practices are protected under the ground of creed), how creed claims are proven, how creed must be accommodated and what to do where creed bumps up against other rights have led to judicial interpretation and public debate. In Quebec, the provincial government appointed a Commission on Accommodation Practices Related to Cultural Differences 1 in response to public discontent concerning accommodation of, among other things, creed rights. This may be in part because creed is unique in some respects. It encompasses not just innate personal characteristics but also covers associated practices and beliefs. Rights in relation to religion have been recognized as not just equality rights, but also among the “fundamental freedoms” of every Canadian as listed in s. 2 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. 2 As well, as will be seen in the discussion of the human rights decisions in this paper, creed more than any other right is impacted by international events, as issues from around the world can lead to religious intolerance...

Conflict Management

...offering strategic and accurate concepts for resolution. Proposal for an Integrated Conflict Management System Many names can be used to describe a church; the official house of God, the sanctuary, the place of peace, and my personal favorite, “The spiritual grocery store for the souls needs.” On surface, one would assume that such a place would the grounds for constant peace and unity amongst its administrative staff as well as its members. Oddly enough, despite the communicated perfection of God himself, the church too suffers from many areas of conflict based on the imperfections of those who are involved. With the help of Herman Blanding, head pastor for the Faith with Works ministry, my goal is to passionately explore and accurately assess conflict management within the church, and present the absolute best conclusions to help bring the church to its desired state of unity, obedience, forgiveness, faith and growth amongst its administrators and members. My current impression of the conflict management in church is simple; it depends on who is handling it. Some individuals know how to conduct themselves to the utmost of professionalism when it comes to handling clashes of opinions within its members. On the contrary, you have those individuals that will use the...

The focus of the credit union is to help its members save, borrow, and receive affordable financial services. One way is by offering higher interest rates on savings accounts which can be important to people in general but also to the young population who are just starting to save for college or some other long term item such as a car. Typically, credit unions charge lower fees compared to banks and provide credit at competitive rates. Like any other business, Credit Unions must have enough income/ assets to cover expenses related to running a business or risk the possibility of becoming insolvent. Lending money to members is a source of income for credit unions. When borrowers default on this lent money, this puts a credit union at risk and causes tougher rules on responsible lending. They are also known for providing service at the personal level by helping their members plan for the future. The first credit union was founded in southern Germany in the year 1864 by...
