The purpose of this assignment is to outline how attachment, emotion and communication along with resilience all pose advantages and disadvantages for children starting a new school who come from many different social and cultural backgrounds within the same community. Insecurely attached children and their securely attached peers are looked at alongside parental anxiety as highlighted in Bayram’s (2014) newspaper article. Following on from this will be how emotions start once a baby is born, they gain attention through cooing, smiling and using movement of their body (Ibbotson 2015). A child’s emotional capabilities can help them through some of the challenges they will face when they start school. This could prove to be a barrier if a child …show more content…
This person is the child's main caregiver and they typically provide shelter, food, comfort, support and security along with a safe and warm place to live. If some of these are missing or lacking then a secure attachment will not form. Their attachment can be with a number of caregivers depending on who is close to the child. For most children it will be their biological parents this includes fathers alongside mothers (Oates 2015). Lewis et al (1984) as cited in Shmueil-Goetz (2015) said that children with an insecure attachment are more likely to have behavioural issues than children who have a secure attachment to their main caregivers at the time when they reach pre-school age. The insecure children will also find it harder to form new relationships with their peers and teachers. Their social skills for making and keeping friendships may not have developed enough. These insecure children will find it harder to build an attachment with their new teacher. Putting all of these insecurities together will not help a child’s confidence (Shmueil-Goetz 2015). Priddis and Howieson (2012) agree that children who have an insecure attachment may go on to have behavioural issues later in life. Securely attached children will be able to settle better than their insecure peers will. This is because they know and understand that their main caregiver will return at the end of the day (Shmueil-Goetz 2015). Bowlby (2007) stated that children who already go to a childcare professional such as a childminder would have formed a secondary attachment with their key person. They will have gained an early attachment with this figure as well as with their main caregivers. This means these babies and toddlers will already be aware that their caregiver leaves them to go to work and that they always return to collect them at the end of the day (Bowlby 2007). Having this knowledge will enable them to be better equipped for starting school and making new friendships with their peers and their teacher. There are three main experiments that deal with the hypothesis of cross cultural variations in attachment by using the basis of the Strange Situation test. Van Ijzendoorn & Kroonenberg (1988) these two men created a meta-analysis which is where they collect already completed experiments and compare them too each other on a specific topic. This allows researchers to get a better look at overall trends and identify possible relationships that might exist, by doing this they may be able to identify trends that could not be seen in smaller-scale studies. They used 32 studies from 8 different countries that all used the strange situation procedure to study attachment. Using a meta analysis (statistical technique) they calculated the average percentage for the different attachment styles (e.g. secure, avoidant and ambivalent) in each country. The found that secure attachment was the most common type of attachment in all cultures. The lowest percentage of secure attachments was shown in china and the highest in Great Britain.
