The protagonist is told by Ayah an old woman who reminisce about her life. We see Ayah’s inner conflict between a traditional life and a modern way of life. Ayah has lived through many cultural changes and historical challenges and still connects to her Navajo culture to understand these events. One of the major events was the Navajo war in 1863-64 (cite). And The Treaty of 1868 which allowed the Navajo to return to their sacred land. Ayah remembers the injustices and the affected her life. She holds onto the image of her ancestors enduring and surviving the war.
