...With William Tennessee’s powerful theme of combining nostalgia and criticism, The Glass Menagerie is definitely one of the finest and most moving playscripts I have ever read. It is a memory play that tells the story of a typical American family as they face the harsh realities of the modern world. I like how the author used symbolism to portray each of the characters that realistically represents an individual in every family household. The Wingfield family is just like every other family that has a hard time coping with the reality that life presents so they create individual illusions to distort their frustrations and fears. With the common goal to sugar-coat the bitterness of the reality, each of the four main characters has their individual coping mechanism that makes them unique and loved by the audience/ viewers. Although it is definitely a toss between Amanda and Laura, I can identify more with Laura. Like Amanda, I can be expressive of what I want and pushy and nagging because of my determination and drive for success and also because of my passion to help my loved ones be successful. I can also turn away from reality when I dream of what I want but unlike Amanda, my life is not lived based on fantasies and illusions. With the emptiness and suppressed anger she carries, this poor mother does not know how to bury the emotional and traumatic baggage form the past. Her way of coping is by projecting all her frustrations on her children. She wants Laura to live...

...Investigation Plan PROBLEM Does sugar, salt, and baking soda affect the boiling point of water? HYPOTHESIS My hypothesis is that those materials will not affect the boiling point. PROCEDURE To begin my experiment, I will buy a measuring cup, baking soda, and thermometer at a grocery store. The measuring cup will measure to a cup, and the thermometer will be a glass thermometer so it will not break when water gets hot. In a pot, I will take two cups of tap water until it reaches to 212 degrees. Then I will take ½ cup sugar and add it to the 212 degree water and take the thermometer and put in the water and test to see if the temperature of the water changed....

...Kool-Aid Oh yea! It has been said that Kool-Aid makes the world go round and round. I can remember drinking Kool-Aid for as long as I have lived. I know this drink has been around for a while in my family even my parents drank it when they were kids. Let it be told however, that without the proper tools and directions, the great American beverage is nothing more than an envelope of unsweetened powder. There are five simple steps to create this candy tasting Kool- Aid. Picking the proper packet of flavoring is the first step in making Kool-Aid. Check the grocery store shelf for a wide variety, ranging from Mountain Berry Punch to Tropical Blue Hawaiian. My family normally prefers fruit punch or grape. If it's a difficult decision for you, knock yourself out and buy two or three or, as many as you please. The packets usually run under 65 cents so it's easy to buy as many favors as you like. After choosing the flavor that best suits your taste buds, the second step is making sure that your kitchen houses some necessary equipment for making the Kool-Aid. Find a two-quart pitcher. Plastic is nice. Walmart usually sells them pretty cheap and, they come with a nice lid too. Even though, glass pitchers allow the liquid to shine through and add nice coloration to any refrigerator shelf. Next, find a long-handled wooden spoon. They also have black ones. Either one would work. A one-cup measuring cup, a water faucet that has drinking water. We wouldn't want anyone getting sick now...

...Mies’s German Pavilion as an Expression of Modernism Constructed for the International Exhibition of 1929, Mies van der Rohe’s German Pavilion at Barcelona was designed “to represent Germany’s openness, liberality, modernity and internationalism” at the conclusion of World War I. With its logical free plan, glass and marble walls, steel supports and lack of ornamentation, it embodied the principles of architectural modernism. An object of simple serenity for those living in the perils of a chaotic post-war nation, the structure provided an opportunity for reflection to those seeking a new national direction. The pavilion’s modernism was perhaps best exemplified through its technique. It “consisted of a rectangular slab roof supported by steel columns, beneath which free-standing planes of Roman travertine, marble, onyx and glass of various hues were placed to create the feeling of space beyond.” Noted for its austerity, the lack of ornamentation signaled the rejection of a corrupt imperial regime and the classical structures associated with it. Mies instead intended to develop a new form of modern architecture appropriate for an impending industrial democracy. For it was his aesthetic belief that “architectural beauty resides in the simple, spare, almost chaste execution of a logical system.” “The boldest contribution of orthodox modern architecture was the development of what has been called ‘flowing space’…This kind of space produced an architecture of related...

...behind these objects? Recently, I did just that. There is a shadowbox picture that hangs in my sisters bedroom that I covet. I say covet because my mother gave it to my sister Tracy on her 21st birthday and I was jealous. Why not me, I thought. Inside its beautifully carved wooden protected home is several gorgeous details that captured my attention and made me wish I was the possessor of this breathtaking collage. Before I talk about the inside, I would like to talk about the carved frame. I enjoy touching it with my hands because of the beautiful carvings etched into the wood. It makes me think about a bible because it has thick edges. On these edges, there are indentions that make me think of little angel wings. If that isn’t stunning enough, let me tell you about the inside. There is a glass case inside the wood. On the inside of the glass is a big bronze heart that is shaped perfectly and has a rose running through it. Beneath the heart is an inscribed poem entitled “Daughter”. It’s a beautiful poem. The poem is written in calligraphy and it explains how a daughter is kind, loving and delicate like a rose. It also speaks on how a daughter is remarkable, beautiful inside, always thoughtful and considerate. You can look at this frame and tell it wasn’t the most expensive frame, but its beauty and meaning makes it seem like it cost a million dollars. Although it was a gift to my sister for her birthday many years ago, I always took a liking to it. It makes me think of beauty...

...As is known to us, although the concept of equality between women and men in society is widely recognized, but the phenomenon of the " glass ceiling " is impeding women obtaining top jobs . Most of the female staff engaged in low-level jobs in many large companies, very few senior female proportion, the proportion of men and women up to 10:1. And 95% of senior management is male, female managers earn on average only 68% of the males of the same level. In my opinion, that is still inequalities of women. Many excellent career women and female researchers are careful thought, patience and endurance, good communication and coordination. They have many advantages and senior management or scientific research need them. There are some examples of women have success in the top jobs. The first example is Meg Whitman who is currently the president and CEO of Hewlett-Packard, eBay former CEO. When she served as president and CEO. Of her successful leadership, eBay has become a global online marketplace for the world's number one consumer e-commerce sites. And she help grasp the direction of the eBay companies in the new economy, and the company has cultivated a truly global market. Also she become the most powerful women in business of U.S. "Fortune" magazine in 2004.The second example is in the politics. She is Margaret Hilda Thatcher, Baroness Thatcher who was dubbed the "Iron Lady" of the United Kingdom and is the first female leader of the British Conservative Party , is also...

...Rome and the Murderer “Bonnie and George Pennys died Saturday afternoon in their home in Ohio. The couple was shot through a window in their living room and died instantly. Rome Pennys, their daughter, refused to comment.” “Yes Ro.” Bonnie said, looking at her daughter. “Thanks mom,” Rome said enthusiastically, “you’re the best!” Bonnie turned away to her basket of clothes and continues to fold her family’s laundry when suddenly, she dropped. As Rome turned to look at her mother, George’s lifeless body tumbled down the stairs. They both were shot and died, little did Rome know. Rome dipped behind the island cabinets, as an act of protection. She dialed 911 and two cop cars were there before she knew it. Later that...

...For example for biological work I can use regular glass, nitrocellulose , Corex glass or polyallomer. But depending on the speed the material that I will use, my choices vary. For example if I use glass tubes for a speed above 3.000 RMP, the glass will break. Although there some kind of tubes that can withstand f much higher speeds, such as the Corex glass that is used for speeds up to 18000 RPM, or the preparative centrifuge tubes that are made of polypropylene and can withstand up to 20.000 RPM and the Nitrocellulose tubes that are suitable for speeds up to 10.0000 RPM. In addition we have the Polyallomer tubes that are chemically inert and are slippery and can be used for precipitation...

...“Oh, um . . . hi. Nice day, isn’t it?” Spectre said. “No, no, no!” Shatter said and thought. “Um, Spectre, do you want to be my mate?” Shatter said, blushing. “Um, yes,” Spectre said. A few weeks later, Shatter flattened her ears as she looked at Spectre and her kits. She stood up, careful not to trod on any of the kits’ tails. She padded through the tall grass and ran. Spectre wouldn’t wake up. Rabbits normally ran through the grass at night. Shatter ran into the city. She turned into an alley and jumped into a dumpster. Careful to keep her balance on the edge, she looked at the things inside. She would live here. I don’t deserve to be mates with Spectre. Not after what I did. Shatter went behind the dumpster and curled up. She rolled a chicken bone under her paws, and she pondered what would have happened if she hadn’t killed Spirit. I’m going to live alone. I’m not going to let any of my kits or Spectre see me again. I don’t deserve it—not after that. She put her head on her paws and felt her eyelids beginning to droop. She let them close, and she fell...

...Narrative Essay Draft “Just be careful, you’re lucky to be alive, the doctors will be with you shortly” the paramedic told me as he walked out my Emergency Room. My close friend Justin had just sold his car, and was in the market for a new one. He asked if I could give him a ride to Woodbridge VA to look at a possibility. A Dodge Charger SRT-8, the sister car to my Chrysler 300 SRT-8. I thought it was a good option so I agreed. He said we could be there and back the same day. It was only a four hour drive one way. Or so we thought. As I sat on the gurney I replayed in mind the events that landed me here, thinking to myself, how could the night have gone so awry? We should’ve been back home by now. Last I remembered we were flying down the I-95, the most empty I have ever seen it, not surprising being that it was 2:30am. I was doing anywhere from 100-130mph the whole way back. I recall specifically passing the New York sign on the highway. That image stayed in printed in my mind. I remembered thinking to myself, “were close” already thinking about what I was going to do when I go back, little did I know what was about to happen. A bend in the road began to appear. Being that we hadn’t seen a car for at least 50miles, I didn’t slow down for the curve, but at the speed I was going I was forced to ride the double yellow line to make the turn, that decision would change the course of the night in ways no one could have predicted. As we made the turn, my heart skipped a beat and I...

...Powerful me Since young age, my mom has always taught me to eat healthy. All I ever heard was “More fruit and vegetable is the way to go”. Yes, in a country like mine, where we grow vegetables, we can be certain of their rich nutrients and the fact they are good for the health. Here, not only fruit and vegetable are quite expensive but we can’t be sure that we purchase a natural source. The organic labels and the packages are making products good looking and an instant catch for the eye. The truth is I’ve never thought in this matter before, since I am used to buy and use everything organic. The purchasing habits that my family has developed are extremely good. But is it enough? Being so narrowed in our idea of eating healthy and green labeled food, we have forgotten about many serious things. For instance, how our lifestyle affects our surroundings, why products we buy end up being a bad outcome for the planet? The answer lies in the big issue is that, as human beings, we tend to see the positive side only, the one that is convenient for us. I’ve never turned to think about how much damage was to the environment the part where we didn’t recycle. So what if me and my family have always purchased heathy and fresh organic products and produce when Macedonia and its surroundings are lands that has never implied recycling as a way in keeping the environment alive. It’s not imaginable to what extent these regions are polluted with all the amount of paper and plastic not being recycled...

...While thinking about her, he thought about Justin Anderson. “I need to learn more about Justin, such a great young man, we could be buddies,” he said as tears rolled down his cheeks he added. “That boy could be my reason for staying alive.” Being tired and thirsty when he arrived home he made a drink and sat down on the sofa. *** When he woke up from his nap, Mr. Cassidy took care of his friends in the basement and was ready to go for a drive. Grabbing his keys, he went out the front door and noticed Claude standing near the fence. “Hey, do you want to go for a drive?” Running to the gate, he barked as he waited for Mr. Cassidy to open the gate. The hound rushed to the truck, stopped at the passenger’s side and waited. After Ernest had opened the truck door, Claude sat up proud and barked to let him know he wanted something more. Before turning on the engine, he leaned across the hound and rolled down the window. “How is that?” The hound stuck his...

...Lucius Jones was a cruddy and cantankerous bigoted racist. Anyone who didn’t agree with his ideas could “go straight to hell," and anyone who wasn’t from the same race as him, could “burn in hell”. There was a decided difference between the two damnations and Lucius would be more than obliged to explain it to anyone who thought otherwise, if only anyone had the backbone to ask him. He was a crusty, willowy scarecrow looking old man with long gangly limbs, a thin narrow frame and an even thinner face with a hollowed out right eye socket. The empty hole could hold a glass eye, but Lucius chose not to use one and he refused to wear an eye patch. He knew it made people uncomfortable and he liked that. His dingy colored hair, which he rarely...

...of men. Women have historically been viewed as caretakers and or as worthy only of dead-end jobs (Schaefer, 2012). The pattern of pay inequity between employed women and men has been a continuing problem. To this day there is pay inequity and women struggle with the glass ceiling barrier. The patterns of discrimination, sexual harassment, and lack of opportunities still plague a women’s future in the workplace. In addition, there is a pattern that has been established by the societal roles women are assigned. Women are expected to clean the house, take care of the children, and work. While the man typically works and does occasional yard work on the weekends. After discussing this observation from my own relationship, my fiancé agreed that he could do more chores in the house and help with the children. This week my son has been battling a bacterial infection in his throat and I took two days off from work to take him to the appointments and hospital. I asked my fiancé why I always have to take time off for the children and why he does not believe in sharing this responsibility. He just looked at me and said, “Because that is how it has always been.” I am happy to announce that this pattern will be changing in my home. Furthermore, we as a society need to become more accepting of both men and women sharing EQUAL roles in the workplace and in the home.
