Above all, words can barely express how grateful I am to David Card, Patrick Kline and Jesse Rothstein for being so generous with their guidance, time and encouragement throughout my Berkeley years. Being their research assistant and advisee, as well just listening to their seminar comments for 6 years taught me many invaluable lessons. Why I have to “know my value functions”, how to confuse presenters with an Oaxaca decomposition, or what a lot of troubles measurement...

...STATEMENT OF PURPOSE I am very grateful for providing me this opportunity to pen my brief statement of purpose. I would also like to express this with the most sincere sense of gratification. My decision to pursue post graduate study blends my objective of taking up a research oriented career in biomedical and health care engineering with emphasis on biomechanics. Early days of my student life instilled in me a liking for technical and experimentation oriented field. This was when I understood my proper taste and skill that included a profound love for science and mathematics. I took keen interest to develop in me, an inquisitive attitude engraving a deep rooted love for science and mathematics scoring over 82% in my high school and 73% in the higher secondary sections with above 75% marks in science and mathematics. I have done a certified course in Microsoft Office. I have obtained Certificate of Merit for computer programming from NIIT. The immense opportunities, research prospective and newest innovations in medical field drove my attention away from all other realms of technology. I decided to pursue my Bachelors Degree in Biomedical Engineering that could link me with both engineering and medical fields respectively. I am currently pursuing my Bachelor Of technology degree in BME from a very well established university. I have always strived hard to keep myself updated and abreast of the latest trends and developments in the field of Biomedical and Healthcare Engineering...

...with one stone.” The stone was abolishing the five sentence per paragraph policy. The two birds represented writing techniques and understanding how to express myself into a paper. Unfortunately, the only English classes I have ever taken in my higher education were English 102 and English 103. From what I can recall, I was intellectually thinking and writing constantly about my opinions on certain topics. The implementation of doing self-evaluations through writing assignments help me drastically. I was conscious about making sense instead of writing remarkably. Is the...

...Research Proposal: People views about the Psychological role of sleep in our lives Date: August 26, 2013 Subject: Proposal to do a research paper/project on the people views about the psychological role of sleep in our lives. INTRODUCTION Sleep has been the subject of speculation and thought since the time of the early Greek philosophers, but recently scientists have discovered ways to study sleep in a systematic and objective way. With the advent of new technology, scientists are now being able to measure electrical patterns and activity produce by the sleeping brain. Sleeping time is controlled by circadian clock (a biochemical mechanism that oscillates with a period of 24 hours and is coordinated within day-night cycle) and in humans to some extent by willed behavior. Sleep helps the brain commit new information to memory through a process called memory consolidation. Psychological role of sleep has a great impact on our lives. In today’s society, a lack of sleep and high energy are accepted as the “norm”. It seems that people have lost sight of the importance of sleep on our mental and physical health. Many research studies have been conducted and have found that there are many benefits to sleeping regularly and well. It is not quantity that matters so much as quality of sleep. Research has also been done to study the future of sleep and how that may affect people psychologically. The field of sleep psychology is advancing, and will surely change...

...ADA and Affirmative Action Critique The purpose of this paper is to examine the positives and negatives of the American’s with Disabilities’ Act (ADA), and Affirmative Action. The impact of the ADA and Affirmative Action will be discussed as to how it relates to those American’s living with disabilities. This paper will also examine how the American’s with Disabilities’ Act and Affirmative Action may impact companies adhering to certain regulations, as well as the costs. This paper will also give my personal views pertaining to the ADA and Affirmative Action. Affirmative Action Affirmative Action is a valuable government policy in which “organizations will seek to overcome the effects of past discrimination against groups such as women and minorities, disabled persons, and veterans,” (The Universtity Of Iowa, 2004, p. 1). John F. Kennedy was one of the first users of the phrase “affirmative action” when he used it in his Executive Order 10925. This basically stated that companies were to hire applicants of all backgrounds, those with disabilities, and that these employees were to be treated just like everyone else. American’s With Disabilities’ Act It was in 1990 that the American’s With Disabilities Act was signed by President George Bush. The reasoning for the ADA was “to provide a clear and comprehensive national mandate for the elimination of discrimination against individuals with disabilities,” (Atkinson, 2004, p. 42). Persons with disabilities were often...

...Reflective Journal (Panel Discussion) Chuah Pei Jin (0315404) / T4 Initially, I was actually quite afraid of working on panel discussion before commencing our preparation. Reason being was that I thought this particular assignment would be one that's hard to manage since it sounds rather professional. However, I came to realize that my gut feeling was untrue as we progressed on our outline and practice. I expected highly of my group mates as we had previously worked on the research paper together. Thankfully enough, my expectations were fulfilled as everything went smooth sailing in the process and what matters most was that we managed to pull it off. I am proud of our achievement together as a group and I must admit that I have the best group mates one can ever ask for. Everyone was understanding and is willing to meet up for practice albeit the different timetables we share. The outline for the panel discussion was done nicely. There were lots of points for both supporting and opposing party. I am very appreciative of everyone’s willingness to help each other out in producing a satisfactory outline for the panel discussion. To be honest, we faced no problems throughout the process of preparing for this panel discussion. Nothing went wrong for our group actually, from choosing our title to working on our outline and even practice. While there could easily be a clashing of opinions regarding the choice of title, I am glad that...

...Why did you choose HMA? I chose to come to HMA because I had goals I wanted to achieve by getting proper education provided by the school. I wanted to be highly educated in music while being challenged in playing the violin or the piano which I knew I would be able to learn well at HMA. I also wanted to take AP courses and experience unique and rigorous courses only taught to students in this area, by HMA teachers. I also wanted to taste the diversity on the campus which, I know will help me get to understand many types of people before attending college. I also loved the work-based learning internship opportunities, Academy of Performing Arts courses, and looked forward to each club activity held on campus. Mostly, I loved the welcoming feeling I received when I walked in to apply to HMA. I felt that I would be able to improve as a human being and as a student. Anecdote…. Taking AP Biology my Junior year, 2016, was an amazing experience. I learned so much. Both, what I did not know before and about the real world and in science. Mrs. Owen taught me many methods of test-taking, studying, writing, and working in general. I understood every reason I transferred to HMA and loved learning there. I also learned so much from...

I was young, ambitious, and ready to change the world. Then, life happened. Life’s experience unlocked the door and invited me to be open to all possibilities; to take complete ownership of my journey; to cultivate a spiritual relationship with a higher order; and to know that divine intervention exceeds intelligence and is simply necessary. The key difference is the seasoning of my life. The seasoning that hones you and places you at a new crossroad to reach higher, to dig deeper, and to know that your contribution to intellectual discourse, to research, and to best practice is about being open to criticism, sharing yourself with the world, and adding to the richness thereof.
