In this lab, we had four different procedures to complete, and therefore, we divided them among the group members. Randy performed procedure 6.1, procedure 6.2 was performed by Uddi, procedure 6.3 was performed by Mohammed, and procedure 6.5 was performed by me. The setup for the experiments was done by all group members and therefore the following steps were taken:
1. Put gloves on.
2. Placed a piece of paper towel on the table to put the solutions on.
3. Obtained sample portions of the solutions to be tested which included sucrose solution,
Glucose solution, distilled water, reducing sugar, starch solution, egg albumen, honey, amino acid solution, protein solution, salad oil, salad oil and water, known lipid solution, known lipid solution, apple juice, white grape juice, and an unknown
4. Two group members obtained sixty-eight test tubes and labeled them with the appropriate solution.
5. The other two group members added 10mL of each solution into a test tube.
Afterwards, each group member performed his/her assigned procedure.
Procedure 6.1-
1. Align 17 test tubes in a row containing appropriate substances in each.
2. Record the initial color of each solution into your data table.
3. Using a sterile pipette add 10 drops of Benedict’s solution to each test tube.
4. Place all of the test tube into a hot water bath for 3 minutes.
5. Take out all of the test tubes after 3 minutes pass and let them cool for 2 minutes.
6. Record your final color observations into your data table.
Procedure 6.2-
1. Align 17 test tubes in a row containing appropriate substances in each.
2. Record the initial color of each solution into your data table.
3. Using a sterile pipette add 7 drops of Iodine solution to each test tube.
4. Record your final color observations into your data table.
Procedure 6.3-
1. Align 17 test tubes in a test tube rack.
2. Use a sterile pipette to measure our 2 mL of the first solution, and place it into the first test tube.
3. Using a wax marker, label the test tube accordingly.
4. Repeat steps 3-4 until all test tubes are filled.
5. Record the initial color of each test tube.
6. Use a new pipette to add 2 mL of 2.5% NaOH to each test tube.
7. With a new pipette, add 10 drops of Biurets Reagent to each test tube.
8. Flick the test tube to mix the solution.
9. Record the color change of each test tube.
Procedure 6.5-
1. Align 17 test tubes in a row containing appropriate solutions in each.
2. Record the initial color of each solution into your data table.
3. Using a sterile pipette add 10 drops of water to the Salad Oil and Water solution.
4. Using a sterile pipette add 10 drops of Sudan IV’s solution to the remaining test tubes.
5. Record your final color observations into your data table.
After all the procedures were successfully completed, pictures were taken.

CONCLUSION- After doing the lab I can conclude that biochemical tests are used to identify the major types of organic compounds in living organisms. In this lab, we used various reagents to test for the presence of organic compounds in solutions. The Benedict Reagent was used to test for carbohydrates, the Biuret Reagent was used to test for proteins, Iodine was used to test for starch and Sudan IV was used to test for the presence of lipids. In this lab, negative controls indicated the lack of an organic compound in a solution while the positive controls indicated the presence of an organic compound.
Theoretical and Experimental Comparison-
• Theoretical results predicated that onion juice, potato juice, sucrose solution, glucose solution and reducing sugar solution are carbohydrates. Experimental results proved that potato juice, glucose solution, reducing sugar, white grape juice and apple juice are solutions that contain carbohydrates.
• Theoretical results predicted that potato juice and sucrose solution are starch solutions. Experimental results proved that potato starch and salad oil are starch solutions.
• Theoretical results predicted that onion juice, potato juice, egg albumen, amino acid solution, and protein solution are positive results for the Biuret result. Experimental results proved that egg albumen, amino acid solution and protein solution are protein based solutions.
• Theoretical results predicted that starch solution, salad oil, salad oil and water, honey, and lipid solution are positive results for Sudan IV. Experimental results showed that salad oil, and known lipid solutions are the only solutions that are lipids.
*Compared to the initial and final color results, the unknown solutions was found to be apple juice as the changes of color were the same as the changes in apple juice when the reagents were added.
