A long walk to water by Linda Sue Park teaches two stories, but one of them talks about a boy named Salva going on a huge journey. Salva Mawien Dut Ariik was an eleven year old boy that was in the Dinka tribe, along with his family. While his sisters stayed at home, every day he would go to school to get an education. Unfortunately, while he was at school, numerous gun shots were heard from outside. The North and the South were at war, and many people living in the villages around them were either killed or captured. It turned out that his poor friend ended up getting eaten by a lion, which made him continuously feel a lot a grief. Prior to that, Salva figured out that they were going to Ethiopia. They went across a river in canoes they built, and walked in a desert days and days. Meanwhile, rebel soldiers ended up finding them, killing his uncle and sending salva to a refugee camp. He lived there for six years, yet eventually was chased off with the whole camp. Initially, he came along with a large group of people that also used to be in the refugee camp. They spent a whole entire year walking to a different camp, and was safe again at last. Rumors were going around that 3000 people from there were going to America, and Salva was one of them. He took a flight to the U.S.A, and was being taught about everything there by people he stayed with. While living in America, he got a letter from a hospital back in Sudan. His dad was getting stomach surgery, which meant that his dad was alive. He visited his dad and was told his whole family was alive except for two of his brothers.
