...much choice do we really have when we want to purchase goods? Choice is something most people just assume they have when they are picking their cable company, choosing a bank, or even walking through your local food mart. The goal of this essay is to show that while at first glance choices may seem endless, but when you do a small amount of research you can quickly realize that most brands link back to the same parent company. The majority of foods, drinks, and health products we buy trace their way back to 10 major corporations. Society today has this false idea that they have a choice in what they buy at the grocery store. For example you may not like large soda companies and decide to not buy their products. But if you buy bottled water, sports drinks, energy drinks, or fruit juice chances are you are buying a brand from a soda producing parent company. Most retailers charge a fee to get products on the most visible shelves which keeps small companies away from your line of sight. This is because large consumer good companies have a special relationship with retailers. Like an “I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine ideology”. Many of the products that you see on store shelves are direct competitors that are linked to the same company. “ConAgra sells six varieties of popcorn” (http://www.alternet.org/food/how-big-food-creates-illusion-choice-supermarket). Different brands of products is a ploy that most parent companies use to help give you a false idea of choice. This...

...interested in observing consumers that were making purchase decisions for cosmetics therefore, I went over to the Beauty section of the Shoppers Drug Mart. I was fortunate to witness a group of teenage girls (ages between 16 to 20) who were trying to decide which brand of mascara to purchase. One of the girls expressed her current mascara was not satisfactory, and her friends were there to help her choose the best one. To simplify things, we will call the girl who disliked her current mascara “A” while her friends are referred as “B”, “C”, and “D”. They began by walking along the Beauty section and checking all the different brands. As they passed by each brand, “B”, “C” and “D” would give their own comments of that brand to “A”; they commented on the price, quality, and their overall brand impression of each brand. Although the opinions and preferences of “B”, “C”, and “D” conflicted, they finally came to the same conclusion - that “Maybelline” had the best quality of mascaras with a price that was affordable for “A”. “B”, “C”, and “D” also remarked that Maybelline products are exceptional because they have heard positive reviews from their friends and also because of their cute packaging. Now that they have settled on a brand, they started comparing different varieties of mascaras and that took a very long time since they were comparing every single and trivial factor of each mascara (ie. Waterproof, color, price, effect, brush size, brush design). I remembered “A” wanted the...

... Personal Responsibility and Academic Success To obtain academic success through personal responsibility individuals must take ownership of his or her goals. Prioritizing tasks, such as time management, identifying purpose and goal setting are essential in one’s path to success. Even though there may be outside influences that may change life’s course, personal responsibility is necessary for academic success because every choice made is one’s own responsibility and every individual can decide how to shape he or her future. Personal responsibility is the privilege to make his or her own choices and obligations in life. One would agree with famous author Stephen Covey’s explanation. “Look at the word responsibility - “response-ability” - the ability to choose your response. Highly proactive people recognize that responsibility. They do not blame circumstances, conditions, or conditioning for their behavior. Their behavior is a product of their own conscious choice, based on values, rather than a product of their conditions, based on feeling” (Covey, 1989. Pg81) Personal responsibility involves working on one’s own character and skill development rather than blaming others for situations and circumstances. It means choosing to design a life full of purpose and worth. Academic success refers to one’s level of successfully completed schooling and ability to achieve individual success in curriculum studies. Colin...

Some stores will sell refurbish items. What is the return policy if I don’t want the item? The first item I have chosen is a 70” flat screen television, the brand is Vizio it is a LED “235 ultra-slim 1080p 120HZ HDTV E7-li-A3, and the cost is only $1, 689.00 this does not include taxes and I looked around at Kmart and Target and there cost was about $30.00 dollars higher. With this Vizio Razor the resolution is very clear picture and also smooth display for the action scenes with a stunning detail and clarity. This television in the customer review is the number one choice. When choosing a television you must think of the environment, and if it the family will enjoy your choice. 2 My second choice would be shoes for the family or for you. There are billions of shoe sold all around the world from year to year. How we as consumers make the difficult choices of the right shoes for your feet or your child feet and the right size and the right brand. While I looked around I have saw shoes that are sold for 19.99 all the way up to the thousands of dollars. Should I have to pay more because my feet are wide? ...is subject. For brands, the understanding of this behavior is a major challenge in order to meet the expectations of consumers, trying to convince them to buy their products and thus, increase their sales. Why a consumer chooses one product instead of another? What led him to prefer one brand instead of another? What are the factors that influence his choices and purchases? Many factors come into account in consumers’ behavior and how they decide what brand or product to buy. Today, let’s focus on the decision-making process that guide consumers in their choices of brands and products and determine their level of involvement as well as their need for information before buying a product. the decision-making process of consumers are divided into three stages The decision-making process of consumers are divided into three stages According to the famous model developed by John Howard and Jagdish Sheth, two famous Professors of marketing, in their “Theory of Buyer Behaviour”, the decision-making process of consumers are divided into three stages: Extensive problem solving (EPS): It is when the consumer discovers a new product category or wants to buy a product he does not know well and / or is particularly expensive and / or which present a significant risk regarding his economical or psychological point of view. His lack of “experience” in the matter leads to his lack of decision criteria to make his choice. He has no preference for a brand or a specific product...

...Edition Men’s Column Cars are a man’s best and most favorite accessory or some may even refer to them as toys. Since 1335 when the first ever man made care was created by a gentleman called Guido Da Vigevano, an influential culture of men’s style and fashi0n paired with the car has been an important aspect in commanding and the demand of respect as well as recognition. This has evolved with time, new & modern technologies, fashion, grand car designs and the different types of acquired and preferred tastes in choices of fashion brands & class. Social situations make some of the greatest influences in fashion, style, accessories as well as the type of car you are to purchase. In ‘todays’ era we have an amazing range of cars to choose from and our intrinsic motivation comes from affordability, durability, brand communications, neediness, technology, social media as well social status. As I took a visit to GM Motors in Gaborone to look at some of the most popular car brands & style that Batswana men love to own, The General Manager ‘ Daryl’ described to me 3 different types of drivers we have in Botswana; The Family man; The young and aspiring youthful gentleman and the locally travelled gentleman. This made perfect sense to me because I realized how everyone of those gentlemen are different and part of where their influence in style and fashion may be derived. Fashion and style for men in Botswana used to be one of the nonfactors in consideration, how ever taken back 20 years...

...Dissonance is an uncomfortable feeling which people undergo after facing conflicting situation and which incite a drive to change the situation. It can also be considered as a lack of harmony between ones behavior in relation to their belief. Post-decision dissonance refers to a situation where people try to justify the decisions they made in the past mostly after been infringed on. This is because by making a choice to follow certain decisions they may experience disturbance for having left some other likeable decision. In this situation people and especially victims of harm tend to review whether certain decision they took towards perpetrators were the right decisions. It is a situation where people agonize over whether they made the right choice (Kowol, 2008). Various factors affect the amount of dissonance that may arise. The key factor that influences occurrence of post-decision dissonance is the magnitude of the situation at hand and the consequences that may result from it.If a situation is highly consequential there is a high likelihood of this dissonance occurring. Another factor that may affect the dissonance felt is the time taken to be decisive and come to a conclusion on one decision. The longer decision making on a situation is taken the more the dissonance. Difficulty in changing a decision once settled on is also another factor that affects the dissonance felt by an aggrieved person, the less difficult it is to reverse a decision the more the post-decision dissension...

...The Ambiguity of the Impact of Life Choices By Stacy Tohar In the Road Not Taken by Robert Frost the reader is left with ambiguity about the personal impact on the traveler of choosing one road over the other, and therefore ambiguity about the impact on a person from making one life choice to the exclusion of another, as this poem is of course a poem about life choices. The definition of the word ambiguity is doubtfulness or uncertainty of meaning or intention. It is unclear whether the subject of the poem, the traveler, feels contentment, regret, or both about his choice of roads. However, from the poem’s conclusion, it appears that the author intended that the ambiguity remain without resolution, just as is often the case with life choices and the impact of those choices. In the Road Not Taken, the traveler stands at a fork in the road and must choose one road over the other. Of course, this is a metaphorical fork, symbolizing life choices and paths. Knowing that he must choose one road over the other, the traveler attempts to look as far down the way as possible in an attempt to see where each road will take him. This is as in life, where we must attempt to visualize the impact of choosing one life choice over another. However, as with life choices, the traveler cannot see the consequences of one choice over the other with any certainty: “And looked down one as far as I could to where it bent in the undergrowth.”(4-5). The traveler can only see that one road...

...Questions 1. Explain how the concepts of scarcity, choice, and opportunity cost relate to your dilemma. The concepts of all three relate to my dilemma because they all focus on a choice that I have to make. The scarcity in my dilemma is that I don’t have a lot of time to be home with family and be deployed on ships in the ocean. The choice in my dilemma is I have to choose either to stay home with family and friends and not be successful or become a Merchant Seaman and be successful and proud f what I made out of my life. The opportunity cost in my dilemma is that I have to give up laughter, fun, and games with family. 2. When making a decision, are the costs and benefits equally important to you? Why or why not? Based on your chart, explain which category, costs or benefits, would have the largest impact on your decision? No they are not because the costs is the things you will have to give up and the benefits is the good you get out of the dilemma choice you made. To me the costs category would have a big impact on my decision because to me family is important, I don’t like being without my family so by me having to leave them an giving them me up I would really be heartbroken and lonely. 3. Based on the chart and your responses to the above questions, what will be your final choice? ...The illusion of choice. This is a tale of a man called Harold. Harold worked at a fast food restaurant; he stood at his station day in and day out looking up at a screen. The screen told him what to cook, how to cook it and where to put it once he had cooked it. He was happy with his job, his wife, his life. But then all of a sudden, when he was standing at his station he looked up at the screen and nothing was there, there were no instructions or directions to tell him what to do. Harold felt a small unfamiliar feeling of uncertainty and before he knew it, Harold had already begun his adventure. Harold stood at his station for a while; he noticed how time began to drift away faster and faster whilst his glazed eyes stared up at the screen. He had no idea how long had passed. Minutes? Hours? Days? Months? He knew that he would have to brave leaving his station soon. So, with this in mind, he took a sharp breath and lowered his spatula, giving him a grand feeling of dropping a great burden from himself. He pulled his eyes away from the screen and looked towards the exit sign on his right, can Harold do it? Can he drop the world he knows to adventure into a world unknown? Harold slowly approached the sign and opened the large metallic door beneath it. Once he opened the large door he came to another room, a clean and well-furnished room with a set of two opened doors which lay in front of him alongside each other. Upon seeing these doors, Harold took the door on his right. But...
