• After C.D. Jackson took over in 1980 and Jack was removed from the Eaton’s account, he believed that the move was for the benefit of other employee’s at Western Agencies
• Jack became negative, irritable and rude towards clients and began making derogatory comments towards C.D. Jackson
• Jack was advising employee’s to leave the company and was developing attendance issues.
• Jack was becoming forgetful of product information, careless with ordering stock and combative with clients regarding duties he was responsible for
• After C.D. Jackson took over, Jack didn’t understand his role in the company. He was no longer in the inner circle of decisions and, he didn’t feel inventory counting was part of his job.

An opportunity to discuss Jack’s role in the company after the transition of power would have avoided a lot of issues. Active-listening plays an important part in understanding role-perceptions and expectations. In the case of the Eaton’s account termination of Jack; Jackson seemed to show loyalty to Jack in the form of silence, hoping the issue would go away rather than discuss it. Similarly a note was sent in the case of the car purchase conflict, rather than a two-way communication channel including constructive feedback. This led to incorrect perceptions, even though the intent was to save Jack embarrassment or avoid the uncomfortable conversation. Monitoring the grapevine conversations would have also been a good strategy to discover the extent of the underlying
