The Daily Life On A California Mission In Mexican-American Voices Chapter 1 Document 5 it shows us two accounts from a Christianized native man and woman in a mission. The two accounts show us the daily life in a Spanish mission for both native men and women from the early morning to the evening. Both accounts show actions the Spanish do that reveal what the Spanish plan to do with the natives and how they perceive them. We begin with a Christianized Indian man named Pablo Tac in document 5.1 who writes about his daily life in the mission. Tac mentions that in the mission “Soldiers (are stationed here) so that nobody does injury to Spaniard or to Indian…” (Mintz 34). The written statement from Tac shows that the Spanish

The Independence of Manors and Missions

...The Independence of Manors and Missions Economic activities were a vital source of income and support for the Medieval manors and California missions. These economic activities consisted of growing and making products that would be used to keep the manors and missions operative. Even though both manors and missions grew and made products, some of these products had different purposes, while others are similar or identical. The typical Medieval manor was run by a lord who controlled and supervised his stewards. Each steward was required to assemble an annual statement of all the income earned. Farmlands around the manor were cultivated by oxen. On this farmland, grew fruit trees, nut trees, and grafted trees. Some other things that were produced from the land are turnips, honey, wax, soap, wine, mead, vinegar, beer, eggs, mustard, and dairy products such as cheese and butter. Two thirds of these foods were for their own consumption, and the remainder was to be documented. Stewards had to provide these aliments with immense care and cleanliness. Stewards were also in charge of making sure the manor was stocked and provided with household items such as bedding, furniture, and weapons. Stewards also had to consist of workers with a trade, usually, blacksmiths, cobblers, carpenters, sword-makers, and many others. Life on a Medieval manor was all about hard work and efficiency; laziness could presumptively affect income. Mission San Juan Capistrano was not run by a sole leader...

Mission Dolores

...A mission is a religious settlement used for turning people into neophytes for a new religion. In the case of the Spanish mission chain, it was used to turn Native Americans into Christians. A mission had padres who would perform religious tasks and teach the Native Americans Christian ways. Usually, the padres did this by having them worship their god and do the tasks that the Spanish needed to do to keep the mission chain thriving. The missions began in California when Russian pelt hunters started getting closer to the coasts of California. The Spanish perceived them as a threat and built the missions for security and territorial conquest. The Mission San Francisco de Asis, also known as Mission Dolores, was founded on June 29, 1776, by Father...

Augmentation

...Southern California presents a varied and somewhat unique region of the state. Beginning in the north, tribes found in this area are the Chumash, Alliklik, Kitanemuk, Serrano, Gabrielino Luiseno Cahuilla, and the Kumeyaay. The landmass and climate varied considerably from the windswept offshore Channel Islands that were principally inhabited by Chumash speaking peoples. Communication with their mainland neighbors was by large and graceful planked canoes powered by double paddle ores. These vessels were called "Tomols" and manufactured by a secretive guild of craftsmen. They could carry hundreds of pounds of trade goods and up to a dozen passengers. Like their northern neighbors, the Tactic speaking peoples of San Nicholas and Santa Catalina Islands built planked canoes and actively traded rich marine resources with mainland villages and tribes. Shoreline communities enjoyed the rich animal and faunal life of ocean, bays and wetlands environments. Interior tribes like the Serrano, Luiseno, Cahuilla, and Kumeyaay shared an environment rich in Sonoran life zone featuring vast quantities of rabbit, deer and an abundance of acorn, seeds and native grasses. At the higher elevations Desert Bighorn sheep were hunted. Villages varied in size from poor desert communities with villages of as little as 100 people to the teaming Chumash villages with over a thousand inhabitants. Conical homes of arroweed, tule or croton were common, while whale bone structures could be found on the coast...

Mural Analysis

...Nicholas Gibney Hernandez Hum 225 Professor Zupan April 22nd, 2015 Victorion: El Defendor de la Mision I was extremely excited to go visit the Mission Murals mostly because I have never seen them before. I didn’t know what to expect heading down there. When I arrived in Balmy alley I was not disappointed. I was immediately drawn to the very first mural I saw. I knew right then and there I was going to choose this mural. Even though I had yet to see many more murals my mind was set. The mural I chose was “Victorion: El Defendor de la Mision,” by Sirron Norris. I was immediately drawn to Norris’s mural mainly because of his focal point. In the center of his mural is what I believe to be a giant transformer made up of San Francisco Victorian style houses. I was immediately drawn to the transformer or “Victorion” because of its massive size in the mural. Also how the small people are all looking up to it. Norris didn’t use a massive change in value or contrast to draw the viewer’s eyes to Victorion but just its massive scale in the mural. I was also drawn to his cartoon style that he uses in this mural. It was different than all the murals that I saw that day. His style is a little bit surreal but mostly cartoon, which I thought was interesting. The way he created San Francisco in this cartoon style was really cool to look at. He puts recognizable landmarks and elements that are from San Francisco. For example he has Sutro Tower in the back and also has a cable car with...

Mba 580 Week 1

...University of Phoenix MBA/580 '' Strategies for a Competitive Advantage Instructor: William Wider Mission, Vision, and Values Week 1 January 14, 2009 Mission, Vision, and Values: A-Z Wireless The company originally opened its doors January 2, 1992 operating under the name of Southern California Telecommunication Distributors, Inc. (SCTD), (A-Z Wireless, 2009). SCTD target market initially consisted of small cellular resellers in Southern California that did not have the buying power to purchase the most popular name brand phones such as Motorola, Nokia, Ericsson, Audiovox, LG and Samsung, in an affordable manner. James Walters, founder of SCTD, realized that the demand for cell phones was extremely high and logistically there was a supply chain gap between international manufactures and resellers (Walters, personal communication, January, 13, 2009). Only a few companies existed nationally in the role of distributor, and James wanted to be amongst the first in Southern California. Uncovering this unsaturated market niche afforded SCTD to grow its business from a small region wholesaler to a nationwide reseller. From 1992 to 1997, SCTD had grown to become a company that imported cell phones and accessories from various countries, and serviced customers on both a national and global platform (A-Z Wireless, 2009. A-Z Wireless is a small business organization in the wireless industry...

Mgt 599 Case Study

...Case Study, Module 4 TUI University MGT 599 Strategic Management EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The California Pizza Kitchen (CPK) is an established high-end pizza restaurant chain competing primarily in the United States although it does have some international locations. The company reported an estimated $664.7 million in revenue for 2009 and operates some 252 unique locations with more than 14 thousand employees (California, 2009). The Porter’s Five Force Analysis indicates that the degree of industry rivalry is extremely high making CPK’s generic strategy based on quality difficult to maintain in a down economy. Additionally, the sheer number of competitors in the industry and the pizza segment specifically affords buyers a lot of power in choice. The PEST analysis indicates that CPK’s industry is not very regulated although it is subject to some health inspections at the lower government levels and the economic segment of the PEST is its area of critical exposure. The recommendation is that CPK hasten its international expansion into markets such as China in order to diversify its markets and revenue streams. CPK’S STRATEGY CPK is competing in a very crowded marketplace which is the restaurant industry an industry that is extremely competitive. There strategy is more focus within the company's market...
