Today we will discuss about the Cartesian coordinate system. It is a coordinate plane that is formed when a vertical scale or the y-axis goes through a horizontal scale or the x-axis that defines each point in a plane. The point in which the x-axis and y-axis meet is known as the origin or zero. The two axes divide the plane into four areas called quadrants. The top- right is the first quadrant and it continues counterclockwise in order. The Cartesian coordinate system was developed in 1637 by a French mathematician and philosopher Rene Descartes who noticed a fly crawling around on the ceiling. He watched the fly for a long time. He wanted to know how to tell someone else where the fly was. Finally he realized that he could describe the position of the fly by its distance from the walls of the room. When he got out of bed, Descartes wrote down what he had discovered. Then he tried describing the positions of points, the same way he described the position of the fly. His discovery would help paved the way for more analytical geometry. The discovery of the Cartesian coordinate system has revolutionized mathematics by providing a link between algebra and geometry. It is the foundation for analytical geometry which uses the principals of algebra and analysis. For example every point on a coordinate plane has a set of coordinates which is input (x value) and the output the (y value) known as order pairs. We can draw a line on a coordinate plane using two or more points. In analytic geometry you can find the distances between you are able to gather information about the line and write an equation of it. Usually the Cartesian coordinate system is applied to gather equations lines, shapes and three-dimensional figures. The Cartesian system can be used for three dimensional spaces as well. The three-dimensional representation is a triplet of perpendicular lines that intersect at the origin. The third line is known as the z-axis. The discovery of the Cartesian coordinate system has revolutionized mathematics by providing a link between algebra and geometry. It is the foundation for analytical geometry which uses the principals of algebra and geometry. In modern times, The Cartesian coordinate system is used in architecture, maps, coding for graphics, etc. Longitude and Latitude is based upon the coordinate system where any point in the world can be defined as by a pair of coordinates. The x-axis is represented by the equator and the y-axis is represented by the prime meridian the distance between any two places can be calculated using this coordinate system which organizes and easily pinpoint any location with greater accuracy. Many amazing architecture and construction used the coordinate system to map out geometric shapes used to assemble complex structures. When building structures such as bridges, tunnels, and highways architects must first draw out the design on a coordinate plane and find the dimensions of the building before any construction can be attempted. The coordinate system is important when coding software or constructing graphics on a computer or mobile device. Grids keep things organizes while helping to make 3D graphics on software. Programmers use the three-dimensional coordinate planes to design their graphic and use algebra to find out dimensions of their 3D graphic. Thus the coordinate systems keep things organized and neat.
