...| | Panera Bread Company | The observation and analysis of a fast food restaurant | Panera Bread Company | The observation and analysis of a fast food restaurant | Background Information Rationale I chose to observe operations at Panera Bread Company (Panera) based on two factors: 1) I like the food and overall ambiance – I think Panera uses ingredients that are fresher and of higher quality than more traditional fast food restaurants. I also like that customers can sit down to eat using proper silverware and plates rather than using plastic utensils eating off of paper wrappers and plastic forks. Many Panera locations also have a patio, for al fresco dining, a cozy fireplace, for the winter months, and a small section with upholstered chairs and sofas. 2) Panera offers free Wi-Fi – this was an important factor because I wanted to take notes during each visit without bringing attention to myself. Because Panera offers Wi-Fi, it is not unusual to see customers with laptops. Visits I visited three different Panera locations over the course of several weeks and spent approximately 2 hours at each location. Location | Date and time of visit | Order Placed | | | | 5600 Urbana Pike | April 6, 2010 | Cuban Chicken Panini with chips as a side, an unsweetened iced tea and a Toffee Nut Cookie | Frederick, MD 21704 | 2:40 PM | | 136 Nassau Street | April 11, 2010 | Tuna Salad Sandwich (standard condiments replaced with Dijon mustard and...

...standards of hiring by reinforcing gender stereotyping; causing them to be guilty of disparate treatment. The disparate treatment in this case was due to women being treated differently in comparison to their male co-workers in regards to promotions, pay, and hiring. Female applicants who felt discriminated were mainly those who applied for jobs within Home Depots West Coast Division. They felt they were being overlooked during hiring and bypassed in connection with promotions, salary, and job assignments opportunities within the workplace. Home Depot, however, felt they did nothing wrong and stated the unfairness of what they were being accused of was due to most female job applicants having experience as cashiers, so they were placed in similar positions, such as, cashier positions, clerical duties, customer service, and so forth. In addition, their explanation for the high turnaround in percentage of male employees within the home repair, plumbing, carpentry departments, etc… were due to male applicants expressing interest in those type of skilled employment. 2. How does this case illustrate the application of new technology to solving issues that have never been tied to technology? Can you think of other ways technology might be used to address diversity/EEO/affirmative action issues? Home Depot was able to tie technology by solving issues by introducing a Job Preference Program, which provides in-store computer kiosks that allow...

Besides soft drinks, candies and chewing gum, some snack bars sell hot dogs, hamburgers, french fries, potato chips, corn chips and other foods. While this is usually the case, sometimes "snack bar" refers to a small café or cafeteria. Various small, casual dining establishments might be referred to as a "snack bar," including a beverage and snack counter at a movie theater and/or a small deli. Many places that have snack bars have a "No Outside Food or Drink" policy, to encourage sales. The first known use of the word "snack bar" was in 1930. A snack food or commonly called snack is seen in Western Culture as a type of food not meant to be eaten as a main meal of the day, unlike breakfast, lunch or dinner but rather a assuage/moderate a person’s hunger between these meals, providing brief supply of energy for the body. In an organization such as the food service industry its major objective impacting the maximization of profit, one of the most vital role in an establishment striving towards success is being knowledgeable in the purchasing activities of on establishment. Conversely, the failure to properly control food costs can have a more devastating effect than overspending in most other cost categories. It is not surprising that the primary concern of many operators is their food cost. As costs increase, this concern grows. Rising food costs often force management to re-examine the operation's ordering / purchasing needs. ...ENG 102 Darren Robbins Sammy the Insensitive Cashier First person narrators have a tendency to tell us their story as they see it, whether it is believable, is for us to decide. That is exactly what happens, when John Updike, chose Sammy, a 19-year-old, cashier at the A & P to narrate the story, “A&P”. As a result, Sammy’s story becomes doubtful, because his behavior towards everyone is a bit erratic. He calls most of the patrons "sheep" or followers, making them impossible to tell apart. Therefore, they become nonessential characters, to represent an era of conformity in America. Since Updike, elected to have a first person narration from Sammy, it allows us to directly, see his hatred for traditionalism and his derogatory views of the people, in his tiny hometown. Thus, due to his lack of restraint on making immature judgments of others, and his urge to act on impulses, one cannot sympathize with Sammy. It becomes clear that Sammy is an unsympathetic narrator, when he uses hasty and most of all uncalled-for observations. As a result, we can conclude, that he judges others solely based on their looks. Apparently, Sammy has never heard the saying; don’t judge a book by its cover. As the story begins, “In walks these three girls in nothing but bathing suits” (539). Sammy standing at the register first sees them when they reach the bread. He first describes “the one in the plaid green two-piece. She was a chunky kid, with a good tan and a sweet...

This means duties of a cashier will range, but there are some potential expected responsibilities including ringing up sales, taking returns, issuing receipts, counting out change, and running registers or any other equipment needed to process incoming payments. number of cashier jobs involve ringing up sales. In many grocery and retail stores this could mean using a handheld or counter scanner to scan each item so its price is accurately reflected. Sometimes items aren’t immediately available for scanning, such as food in a fast food restaurant. The duties of the a cashier might then involve hitting buttons that signify the type of food purchased, this is the case in many fast food establishments, or simply putting in the price of the items that are being purchased. In lots of mom and pop retail establishments this method may be used instead of any form of scanning method. People may also need to take returns, which could mean ringing up a sale in a backwards manner so that the cash drawer will open to give out money back. Alternately, returns don’t always result in money back, and the duties of a cashier could include filling out receipts for store credit or making exchanges. Not all cashiers are permitted to do returns, and this...

...Memorandum To: Cynthia Crowninsheild From: Date: 2/22/2014 Re: Production Analysis SHUZWORLD A. Distribution Pattern Shuzworld has three plants that ship units to three central warehouses. The company would like to know the lowest transportation cost monthly along with the best shipping plan to achieve the lowest cost. To analyze the cost we are using the transportation modeling tool. The optimal cost is $13,400 which would be the lowest monthly transportation costs which is shown below. Transportation modeling is the best tool to use as it finds the lowest optimal costs when shipping products from several plants to several different destinations. Our model shows three different plants of Shanghai, Shuzworld H, and Shuzworld F with three different warehouses. The individual unit costs to ship from each plant to each warehouse is entered in order to calculate the optimal cost. Also shown below is a shipping list whish details the exact amounts that should be shipped from each plant to each warehouse in order to achieve the optimal costs shown. This would be the best distribution pattern to use in order to achieve the optimal costs. The patterns show any demand constraints and also meets availability while minimizing total shipping costs. Looking at the shipping list chart the increased production from 1300 to 2800 units caused the supply to exceed the demand which is shown in the Dummy row ( dummy destination at no cost) that way the cost figures...

...union for a cashier at Wal-Mart. It will present some ways a union could benefit the cashiers and also ways a union could be harmful to them. Unions could protect the cashiers from the abuse of the company. On the other hand, unions could also abuse in their demands hurting all the employees. Finally, this paper will show my viewpoint on the unions as beneficial or not to cashiers at Wal-Mart. Advantages and Disadvantages of a Union The word union evokes strength. However, when people talk about labor unions, the effects can be both positive and negative. Mathis and Jackson (2011) state, “union is a formal association of workers that promotes the interest of its members through collective actions” (p. 540). Cashiers at Wal-Mart have a lot of responsibility. First of all, they work with cash, products, prices, and, the most important, they work directly with customers providing service. They have a key role in the store. The advantage of having a union at Wal-Mart for a cashier would be that the union would negotiate better pay and benefits for them. Some of the benefits for the cashiers are: 1. Cashiers have to deal with different type of customers and sometimes they encounter difficult situations. With these risks and conditions, a union can protect them from those working conditions and request to keep their work. (Not sure what you mean)Union could save them from certain customer’s complaints. 2. A way a union can be of benefit to a cashier is pay...
