Cervical Subluxation

Cervical subluxation is a separation of the neck bones (cervical vertebrae) that occurs because of injury to the ligaments that hold the vertebrae together. The cervical vertebrae are made up of seven bones. These vertebrae support your head and also protect the spinal cord as it passes through the neck.

CAUSES
This condition may be caused by injury or trauma with sudden impact. It commonly occurs when the neck is extended too far. This can happen from:
• A car accident. This is the most common cause of this condition.
• A sports injury.
• A fall.
• A violent physical attack.

SYMPTOMS
Symptoms can vary depending on the angle of separation to the cervical vertebrae. Symptoms include:
• Neck pain or tenderness …show more content…
Tests may include:
• X-rays.
• CT scan.
• MRI.

TREATMENT
Treatment for this condition depends on the severity of the condition. Treatment may involve:
• Wearing a neck brace or collar to support the neck. This limits how much you can move your neck.
• Medicine to reduce pain and swelling.
• Closed reduction. This is a method of physical manipulation to realign the cervical vertebrae without having surgery.
• Skeletal traction. This may be used prior to surgery. Skeletal traction uses weights, pulleys, and ropes to exert a pulling force to help realign the cervical vertebrae before surgery.
• Surgery to put the cervical vertebrae back in place. Surgery is needed if:
○ The cervical vertebrae are unstable. This means that the cervical vertebrae do not stay in place and they move easily.
○ There is a lot of nerve damage in the cervical vertebrae area.
○ There is a spinal cord injury.
○ There is a pocket of blood over the spinal cord.
○ There is a cervical disc pushing on the spinal cord.

HOME CARE INSTRUCTIONS
• Wear a neck brace or collar as directed by your health care provider. Do not remove it until your health care provider approves. Ask how long you will need to wear
