The United States went through a massive change in nearly all aspects of life. The invention of the car, radio, and television gave even the most remote rural farm woman access to the outside world. This exposure changed the way America functioned. People in the United States no longer had limited access to information, and products and changed the way advertisements were created. Advertisements from 1920 unto 1959 changed dramatically in the way women were portrayed and how they were attempting to influence women to buy their products.
The first major change in advertisement was in the way women were pictured. In the 1920’s it was the era of the flapper and the dresses got shorter and revealed more skin. The advertisements also changed in …show more content…
All of the advertisers in the beauty industry made sure to point out the use of their product will make you look young. Such as this advertisement from 1921 by Palmolive titled, “Keep that Schoolgirl complexion” . They state the use of Palmolive the proper way, with directions, will leave you looking as if you just got out of class. Another example of Palmolive wanting to emphasize the use of their product back in the 1920’s will make a man stop and look and dream of having a girl like you was the advertisement, “The Girl you Stop to Look At” . In 1951, Dorothy Gray Salon posed the question “Does your husband look younger than you do?” They are implying that men age better than women due to all the worry a woman has in her life and without their product will look older than their husbands, which is a devastating prospect for a woman. The advertisers did not only use the prospect of their husbands looking older but they also used the words of cover models to sell products geared towards making women feel like they are glamourous. As in this ad From SweetHeart Beauty Bath Soap, with a direct quote from a beauty model, Lillian Marcuson, “I often have to wear revealing evening gowns for fashion shots. That’s why I always use SweetHeart in the big bath size. My SweetHeart Beauty Baths keep my skin lovely ‘all over’…. Soft and baby-smooth”. They are relying on a woman to look at this beautiful fair skinned woman and think that could be me as long as I use their

Industries were still thriving in America and they were actually richer and more powerful than before World War I. So what event made the 1930’s so different?
