I. The Ottoman Empire, to 1750 * After the Mongols, the Muslim Ottomans’ centralized governmental system proved to be somewhat ineffective for long-term control. A. ...Chapter 19 is about international trade, and what the benefits of international trade are. US Trade Patterns Imports are the goods and services that we buy from people and firms in other countries. Imports represent 18% of total GDP. Exports are the goods and services that we sell to people, firms, and governments in other countries. The U.S is the world's largest exporter, but exports represent a small fraction of total output. The trade balance is the difference between the value of exports and imports. When imports exceed exports we have a negative trade balance called a trade deficit. The opposite is a trade surplus. Motivation to Trade Specialization increases total output. Without imports a country cannot consume more than it produces. Because just by changing the mix of output in at country total world output increases, that country has a motivation to trade. This works because when nations specialize in production, they can export one good and import another and end up with more total goods to consume than they had without trade. PURSUIT OF COMPARATIVE ADVANTAGE The ability of a country to produce a specific good at a lower opportunity cost than its trading partners is called comparative advantage. Nations export goods with relatively low opportunity costs, and import goods with relatively high opportunity costs. Some countries may have absolute advantage, that is, the ability of to produce a specific good with fewer resources than other countries. ...

...Intermediate Chapter 19: Accounting for Income Taxes * Temporary Differences – Difference between the tax basis of an asset or liability and its reported amount in the financial statements * Taxable amounts increase taxable income in future years * Deductible amounts decrease taxable income in future years * A deferred tax liability represents the increase in taxes payable in future years as a result of taxable temporary differences existing at the end of the current year * Deferred tax expense is the increase in the deferred tax liability balance from the beginning to the end of the accounting period. * A deferred tax asset is the deferred tax consequence attributable to deductible temporary differences. * In other words, a deferred tax asset represents the increase in taxes refundable (or saved) in future years as a result of deductible temporary differences existing at the end of the current year. * A company should reduce a deferred tax asset by a valuation allowance if it is more likely than not that it will not realize some portion or the entire deferred tax asset. “More likely than not” means a level of likelihood of at least slightly more than 50 percent. * Income tax payable or refundable +/- change in deferred income taxes = total income tax expense or benefit * Taxable temporary differences are temporary differences that will result in taxable amounts in future years when the related assets are recovered. * Deductible temporary...

...In book 19, chapter five, Augustine begins his discussion questioning the idea that “the life of the wise man must be social” (19.5). After this quick mention the wise man falls off the page and the focus of Augustine’s discussion shifts. It shifts to a talk about how human life is full of “slights, suspicions, quarrels, war, all of which are undoubted evils” (19.5). The only time human life is free of these evils is during peace, but for Augustine “peace is a doubtful good” (19.5). He makes this claim because during times of peace we spend time not with our declared enemies, instead dealing with our friends. Augustine’s claim from here is the friends may actually bring more evil than enemies because the content of their heart shifts day to day and one cannot take necessary precautions against a secret enemy. Because Augustine opens his discussion with talk of the wise man and...

...Chapter 19: The Adverbs (Gli Avverbi) An adverb modifies an adjective, a verb, or another adverb. Adverbs answer the questions when, where, how, and how often. While English adverbs are usually formed by adding –ly to adjectives, many Italian adverbs are formed by affixing –mente to the adjective’s feminine form. Adjectives ending in either –re or –le drop the final –e before adding –mente. Adverbs are invariable words. Examples: Adjective Adverb alta (high) altamente (highly) semplice (simple) simplicemente (simply) vera (true) veramente (truly) gentile (kind) gentilmente (kindly) regolare (regular) regolarmente(regularly) Placement of Adverbs Adverbs which modify an adjective are placed before the adjective. Lui è un uomo molto generoso. (He is a very generous man.)...

...Chapter 19 1. The American War for Independence was when the colonists decided they were sick of paying taxes to the British, and they were sick of being under Britain’s rule. The revolution started when the stamp act was put in place in 1765. This led to riots. Also, the Americans and the Britain’s had very different views on how a country should be run. For example, Britain believed in a supreme authority. America believed in having representatives of the people. The colonists kept rioting until they finally decided in 1776, to declare their independence. The Declaration of Independence was approved on July 4, 1776. It was a great risk fighting Britain because they had a very strong army. However, if they hadn’t taken that risk, we wouldn’t be living here today. George Washington led the American troops. One of the main reasons America won their independence was because France came to help. If it weren’t for France, we probably would have lost. The Americans won at Yorktown in 1781. Cornwallis finally surrendered. The Treaty of Paris was signed, which showed that America was an independent country. 2. France played a huge role in America’s victory. It’s interesting though, because France didn’t come to help because they believed in the cause. France came to help because they wanted revenge on the British. France brought in their Navy and blockaded the British. They also provided money and arms. And French officers and soldiers were under Washington’s commands. This...
