...The Charleston was a dance that became popular in the 1920’s. It was danced to ragtime jazz music and was quick paced. This dance was popular worldwide but especially in Australia. This dance is in a 4/4 time rhythm. The dance was a physical symbolism of the audacious enthusiasm that many of the young people of that generation wanted to express. The Charleston Dance is believed to have originated from an earlier dance style, and actually existed before the 1920’s. However, it was not until its appearance in a Broadway show, “Running Wild” in 1923 that it became a worldwide phenomenon. The dance was performed to the song, “The Charleston” which was composed by James P Johnson. The popularity of the Charleston dance was mainly with rebellious young women, also known as Flappers. These women were considered to be scandalous for their short dresses, bob haircuts and listening to Jazz music. The Charleston can be danced with a partner or in a group or solo. There are many variations of the dance but the basic steps involve kicking and swinging arms. It is danced in exaggerated and loose movements and the arms move in opposite direction to the legs. The Charleston was considered to be so scandalous and exuberant that it was banned from many dance halls. The Lindy Hop evolved from the Charleston Dance in the late 1920’s. It originated from the streets of the African American districts of New York City. It spread across the USA and eventually reached Australia as well. The name, Lindy...

...Comparing Styles in Music or Dance Jon Smith Art100 September 38, 2018 Professor Jonas Basom Comparing Styles in Music or Dance There is a time to laugh, a time to cry, a time to love, a time to hate, and there is a time to dance. Dance is one of the most expressional forms of art that has been around for thousand of years. It allows communities to come together, celebrate, to tell a story, and to express emotion. It is an art that requires the use of almost all of the performer's body and soul. It has started wars, and it has brought peace. Dance has changed the world. Two of these styles are Ballet and Jazz, and they have been apart of society and life for many years. When one thinks of beauty and grace in dance, they cannot help but to think of Ballet. In the 15th century, Ballet was first developed in the Italian Renaissance courts. Celebrations like weddings and extravagant parties called for dancing to be an elaborate spectacle. At these events, dancing instructors taught Noblemen and women how to make these events truly memorable by having them participate in the performances. This was the meager beginning of Ballet until Catherine de Medici began to fund ballet in the French court in the 16th century. Catherine de Medici was the wife of King Henry II of France and a great patron of the arts. Catherine would throw elaborate festivals called ballet de cour. Ballet de cour included dance, decor, costume, song, music and poetry. It was a culmination of all the arts...

...Competition Bikes Inc. Budget Analysis Summary Report Budgetary Concerns There are several budget areas in Competitions Bikes year nine budget forecast that are areas for concern. The factory overhead budget for the year was budgeted at $481,798 less $150,000 depreciation. Total depreciation over the last three years has remained at $130,000 per year for the past three years as identified on the company's balance sheets. Therefore setting depreciation at $150,000 for the 9th year is too high without identifying any new major purchases that would add to this depreciation. Even though depreciation is not actual cash flow it does define the reduction of company assets and should be reported accurately. The cost of distribution network support needs to be adjusted. A distribution network is everything involved in getting the product from the manufacturer to the retailer. The estimated expense for year nine is $50,830 which is equal to the year eight dollar amount however, year nine forecasted 110 more units sold. The cost per unit of distribution network support is equal to $14.95 when comparing the previous three years data. This meant the forecasted budget for an estimated 3510 units should be set to $52,474.50. Executive and Administrative salaries have not changed for three years and are budgeted at $220,000 and $170,000 respectively. Not providing any raise for the employees at Competition Bikes could make employees feel unappreciated and devalued. Decrease morale causes...

...GLO-BUS SIMULATION DO YOU EVEN LIFT The Glo-bus simulation was a unique experience that all students should participate in order to manage a business in a competitive industry. From a strategic perspective, Do you even lift's initial goal was to make the highest profits and return on equity in both markets by offering a quality entry level and multi featured camera at a reasonable price throughout the game. Despite the sluggish start, we created a big shock in the industry half way through the simulation which quickly transcended our company to become one of the top companies in camera industry. Strengths and Strategies Do you even lift began to dominate the industry by producing and offering a strong quality product in multi feature market and keeping the rest of the costs low and price such as the entry level production and compensation of workers. We decided to employ a strategy that will correct our weaknesses from our worst year in Year 10. Since our entry-level camera was above average during year 10, we wanted to produce a five star multi featured camera. We made sure we produce a product proportional to the compensation of relative productivity of workers. The reason why we wanted to produce the highest quality product because we believed consumers would appreciate our product as time went on as we distinguished ourselves as the best multi featured camera in the market. Since we wanted to stick by our original goal, we decided to lower the price and costs...

...Name ENG 106 Professor 13 June 2011 The Linkage between “Teddy” and “A Perfect Day for Bananafish” J.D. Salinger’s stories “Teddy” and “A Perfect Day for Bananafish” share similarities between the main characters, the tragic fate of the main characters, and the author’s continued theme of the shallowness that existed in American culture in the 1950’s. In another of Salinger’s stories “Seymour: an Introduction,” it is mentioned that Seymour’s brother Buddy wrote “Teddy,” and described Teddy as having Seymour’s eyes (Kaufman 132). Buddy also says the people tell him his stories are all about Seymour, which further suggests a link between the two characters (Kaufman 132). Seymour and Teddy are both outcasts that share their lives with people that they are emotionally disconnected from. They are unable to assimilate into the world around them and therefore their stories come to a similar conclusion. Seymour and Teddy share many similarities that lead the reader to assume Salinger was attempting to provide a linkage between the stories. Seymour appears to be mild mannered though it is obvious he is disturbed mentally. He lives in isolation from his wife and from others in his social circle. Even doctors that are treating him cannot understand or help him recover. His wife dismisses Seymour’s mental stability in her conversation with her mother, and is more concerned with talking about the psychiatrist’s drinking habits and his wife’s ugly dress, than to ask him questions...

...A perfect Day for Bananafish is portraying a man, Seymour’s journey towards a realization that leads him to take his own life. The climax of the story is when seymour kisses the young girl, Sybil’s foot. After coming back from a traumatic experience from the war, Seymour is on a search for innocence. He wants to rid himself of the impure, finding the people he once loved no longer innocent and almost disgusting: “He calls me Miss Spiritual Tramp of 1949” (5). He even dislikes his wife, as she isn’t pure, not like a child at least which leads him to calling her degrading names. This is why Seymour befriends Sybil, a young girl he accompanies at the beach. Kids are so innocent, they haven’t been exposed to the real world yet, which is why he surrounds himself with younger people. In the water, Seymour tells Sybil a fictional story of the bananafish in which Sybil believes and goes along with: ‘I just saw one” (16), says Sybil as she believes she saw a bananafish. This leads Seymour to thinking he’s escaped the world he despises so much and he made it into the pure place. Seymour he kisses her foot. But her rejection of this brings him right back into reality: “The young man suddenly picked up one of Sybil’s wet feet, which were dropping over the of the float, and kisses the arch. “Hey!” says the owner” (17). Before this he was in his own mind acting out a place where he was a part of the pure world. But when Sybil rejected his need to be innocent, he realized he can never go back...

...Francis Marion: His Life and Role in the American Revolution When someone is learning about the heroes of the American Revolution, we tend to learn about George Washington, with little to no mention of Francis Marion. Marion went from being a farmer trying to take care of his family by living off of the land to a Brigadier General in the South Carolina Militia. His campaign during the American Revolution prevented the British from having a stronghold over the state. In 1732, Francis Marion was born to first generation South Carolinians, Gabriel Marion and Esther Cordes. Marion’s grandparents where French Protestants known as Huguenots. “Among them were two sisters and their husbands – Judith and Benjamin Marion and Ester and Anthony Cordes.” (Miller 3) Marion was the youngest of six children from St. Johns parish. “Born undersized, with malformed ankles and knees, Francis did not look like a future hero.” (Miller 4) As a child, Francis Marion enjoyed the outdoors. He spent his time hunting, fishing, and farming. Marion also spent a great deal of his time in the swamps around his home. He became very knowledgeable about the local swamps and how to survive in them. “In boyhood he had shown a great desire for the sea, and had been allowed to go as a sailor on a trail trip to the West Indies”. (Ravenel 208) Francis was 15 years old when he signed up for the schooner trip. On the return trip home the boat was hit by a whale and began to sink quickly. Marion along with...

...misconception is that marijuana is addictive but studies have shown that it is no more addictive than caffeine, even tobacco is more addictive than marijuana and more deadly. So why is tobacco usage legal and not marijuana? Another pro to this is taxing, if the government sells marijuana and places a tax on it similar to cigarettes, it would create more money and help our economy as well as cut out the costs of housing criminals who have been imprisoned for marijuana possession. Personally I am not sure I would want it legal for personal and recreational usage, but I am completely for legalizing it for medical purposes and for accumulating natural resources based on the information I found during my research.
