...Social Media and Our Children Crystal Y. Mays Liberty University Abstract Social Media today has confronted our youth with different entertainment environments than the one experienced by their parents and grandparents. Today children live in a world that provides various social network resources, like cell phones, Ipods, Ipads, and notebooks, that makes it possible to connect to social networks at any time. Technology is everything to them because they communicate, live and socialize through and with it. It can provide a great opening for children to develop cognitive, social and language skills, but because they are so captivated by the vast products and many programs offered they are missing this opportunity. Social media has also become a very lucrative playing ground for predators, either sexual or bullies to prey on vulnerable and please seeking boys and girls. The power of technology has created a new monster called cyberbully who has the ability to reach out and manifest harm and danger to their targets very easily. Parents can commit to enforcing technology education and monitoring to help their children make a successful tool to access for their advancement and also take the correct defensive measures to protect them from the many dangers. Social Media and Our Children Social media has vastly evolved over the last decade. It has become a vital ingredient of our personal as well as our professional lives. Social media is a key component of practically every...

...Media Violence Has a Negative Effect on Children Justin Holland Devry University Linda Rodriguez November 29, 2010 Media Violence Has a Negative Effect on Children Media violence has a negative impact on children and adolescents because kids often imitate and learn from what they see on television, the Internet, and video games; all forms of media in one way or another that are used widely in most homes in this generation. Although many argue that researchers cannot test this theory, statistics have all shown the same answer: that visual exposition to violence does stimulate aggressive behavior. And statistics set aside, who really wants their children playing games where they run over babies and women, rob banks, pick up prostitutes, and shoot innocent people (the infamous Grand Theft Auto that was very popular when I was in my teens)? Children at younger ages often imitate the actions of characters or celebrities they see on television. Basically, before age four, children cannot distinguish fact from fantasy and their brains are something like a super-sponge. For example, Brotherson states that the ‘prime time’ for visual and auditory development, or a child's capacity for learning to see and hear, is from birth to between 4 and 5 years old (2005). So when a child sees actors or actresses making certain gestures, s/he doesn’t know the exact reason for it. Flipping the finger, sticking one’s tongue out, and taunting are all common gestures on television that children...

...American watches four and a half hours of television a day. However, is that many hours of television good or bad for children? People have different opinions on this subject so it then comes down to the different studies being done. Children come home from school and the first thing they should do is homework; instead, they watch television. How is all that television watching affecting children? Watching television programs and commercials expose children to violence, sexual content and other inappropriate material. Young children, who are still learning control of their minds and bodies, and are likely to mimic what they see, as it seems quite normal to them. Everything that children see or hear in the media early on in their lives affects them in some way. Violence, sexuality, race and gender stereotypes, drug and alcohol abuse are common themes of television Programs. The article states that 72% of children had no time restriction and 52% reported that they were free to watch whatever content. Therefore if children had the proper parental supervision then there would be some control over how long they watch TV and what they watch. Commercials also play a hug role in what children consume. In the article it states that “The average child sees more than 40,000 commercials a year” That is a high number for one child to absorb. Advertisement companies manipulate children with advertisements with toys, action figures and video games. Parents have the control of what to buy their child...

...The Effects of Media on Our Children There has been disagreements about whether or not media, television and video games, have an effect on our children, well I definitely believe that it does. People used to be able to drive down the road and see children playing and having fun but since video games were invented, children would rather stay inside and play their games than go outside and play. Being less active can create many problems, such as weight gain, other health issues, being socially isolated, and some children even become violent after watching the violence on television or playing violent video games. So should we or shouldn’t we limit their television and video game time? What would be the pros and cons if we do or don’t limit their time? Some research shows that there is no difference in children after watching violence and playing violent video games and then there is other research that states that it does, have an impact on the behaviors of children. According to psychologists L. Rowell Huesmann, Leonard Eron, “Children who watched many hours of violence on television when they were in elementary school tended to show higher levels of aggressive behavior when they became teenagers.” (para. 3) Children who play video games and watch a lot of television tend to gain weight because they are in front of the television all day and either not eating much or snacking on bad foods and drinks instead of being outside and being active. “The nutritional value of food...

...How Media Effect Children Franchester White Eng/101 September 7, 2014 Karen Strimkovskey Is your child safe? As a parent, you always want to know what your child is watching on television. The media is a powerful tool that doesn’t always teach a positive lesson. Media have provided the means and opportunity for children to distort reality into fallacies through television and video games. While media programs have a negative effect on children, there are some positive programs. The largest amounts of violence are found in children shows. Children between the age of 2 and 18 spends 6 hours and 32 minutes on an average a day using media with the exception of sleeping this is more than they spend on any other activity. When multiple media is stimulated, this time is increased to 8 hours a day. Big parts of media exposure are violent acts that are also witnessed in video games. On an average, a young child will have viewed 200,000 acts of violence on television (TV). Exposure to violent media wrecks havoc on thoughts, feeling, and most importantly, behavior. “The Influence of Media Violence on Youth,” a report appearing in the December 2003 edition of “Psychological Science in the Public Interest,” points to strong evidence points to the exposure to media violence causes boost in physically and verbally aggressive behavior in children. “Extensive research evidence indicates that media violence can contribute to aggressive behavior...

...Aggression and Violent Behavior 10 (2004) 99 – 128 Does viewing violent media really cause criminal violence? A methodological review Joanne Savage* Department of Justice, Law and Society, American University, 4400 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20016-8043, USA Received 9 September 2002; received in revised form 26 October 2003; accepted 30 October 2003 Abstract The topic of media violence has been the subject of heated debate in recent decades. There is a vast empirical literature on the effects of television on aggression but no published comprehensive review has ever focused on those studies that use criminal aggression as their outcome. The present paper represents an attempt to fill this void and provide a resource for those who do not wish to delve into four decades of original research in order to assess this line of investigation. Studies are evaluated based on contemporary standards of research in the field of criminology. Although the possibility that television and film violence has an impact on violent criminality remains, it is concluded here that, despite persistent published reviews that state the contrary, the body of published, empirical evidence on this topic does not establish that viewing violent portrayals causes crime. ...The Effect of the Media on Aggression in Children. Media is of importance to many people for many reasons, including entertainment and escapism. The mass production of televisions in the 1950’s has led to a phenomenon previously unheard of, with statistics showing that as of 2013, 79% of the world has at least one television set per household (TVTechnology, 2013). It therefore stands to reason that children may have easy access to media that may not be age appropriate. Is it accurate to assume, however, that media can cause aggression in children? The Oxford dictionary defines aggression as: “feelings of anger or antipathy resulting in hostile or violent behaviour”. This definition depicts a narrow view of aggression, with the assumption being it will often manifest physically, this view does not take into account varying types of aggression that can be equally as harmful, such as verbal and psychological abuse (persistent abuse to the point of anxiety or stress). It should also be noted that aggression is a form of anti-social behaviour, a concept that varies culturally, for example one study concludes that Western cultures are far more likely to resort to physical violence, whilst Eastern cultures would more readily resort to verbal abuse (Andreu et al, 1998). The most interesting aspect of aggression, particularly in children, comes from the debate of Nature/Nurture. The debate is the belief that all behaviour can be explained in one of two ways. Nature states that biological...

In the case for TV viewing: 1. The Couch Potato Hypothesis (displacing time that would be otherwise spent in physical activity 2. Promoting eating while viewing leading to higher energy consumption 3. Exposing children to food advertising which influences their dietary intake 4. Decreasing children’s total sleep duration, which may alter their metabolic hormonal pathways related to hunger and appetite Children who spend more than three hours per day in front of their screen devices are at greater risk of developing diabetes, according to new research. ...The Issue of Media Influence on Our Children Ever since the first televisions made their way into American homes in the 1950s, people have been concerned about what their children watch and how it affects them. There is good reason for such concern, as the impact that television has on our children can be astounding - it is said that children are exposed to a violent act every three seconds when they watch cartoons. Although exposure to violent content is one problem media presents, it is not the only one. The messages, which children are being fed via television and social media outlets, are also a good cause for concern. While these problems are pervasive in today’s ubiquitous media avalanche, there are solutions at hand. Having an ongoing and healthy dialogue with children about media content, paying attention to and being selective about what media children are exposed to, encouraging more physical than sedentary activity and promoting self-esteem are very real weapons against the potential onslaught of media’s negative influence. Research dictates the negative impact mass media has upon our children. For example, an article in Science Daily reads: “Fame is the No. 1 value emphasized by television shows popular with 9- to 11-year-olds, a dramatic change over the past 10 years, UCLA psychologists report in a new study. On a list of 16 values, fame jumped from the 15th spot, where it was in both 1987 and 1997, to the first spot in 2007. From 1997 to 2007, benevolence...

...Everything that children see or hear in the media early on in their lives affects them in some way. Positive parenting role models indicate that in the best interest of our children we should limit their exposure to violent acts. Unfortunately, violence is one of the most popular forms of entertainment. Over sixty percent of television shows being shown in prime time contain some form of violence. There are two very opposite sides of this issue. The media who market the violent television, video games and other forms of entertainment argue this is safe entertainment and the others argue that violence promotes violence Current research tends to agree with the proponents who argue that violent media is associated with aggressive behavior. Risky behavior by children and young adults can include violence against others, lack of remorse for consequences. The type of faulty thinking creates stressors in children which can lead to the onset of many different symptoms. Children who view media violence are more likely to have increased feelings of hostility, decreased emotional response to the portrayal of violence and injury that lead to violent behavior through imitation. An example here would be the television show Jack Ass. There have been several accidents related to young men attempting stunts that are done on the show. The act of imitating what they have seen on a television show causes injury to themselves or others around them. The Academy of Pediatrics says “More...

...Should Children be Exposed to Social Media? Learning Team C BCOM/275 June 18, 2012 Dr. Nicholas Sherwin Should Children be Exposed to Social Media? The most popular way to stay connected to family, friends, coworkers and classmates is via social media. Today, there are numerous sites available and with technology are readily accessible to anyone of any age. For children, becoming a member of these sites can expose them to situations and experiences that can have both a positive or negative effect. It opens the door for them to be cyber bullied or can expose them to a new form of peer pressure. Social media sites allow round the clock access to everyone so that we can all be “connected”. Is the cost of this access worth the benefits of staying “connected”? Social Media In todays world, media technology is a fundamental part of children’s lives. American children are heavily exposed to all forms of social media through many different channels of technology. Media is an instrument used as a form of communication, like a newspaper, radio, television, and the internet. Social Media is the main component of communication and is dramatically changing. Individuals can communicate with family and friends in more detail as more contents are created and shared on these social media websites. The most popular media used by children today are: the internet, cell phones, and a wide range are joining the social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace (The Future of Children...

...skills, for example, do not improve by passively listening to the TV. It is developed by interacting with people. They miss out active learning and replace real needs with active needs. The major disadvantages include stereotypes and promoting violence. The main goal of media is to attract as many viewers as possible. Therefore, they will show things that people are interested in rather than what is right and this is how stereotypes are spread. The mind of the kid is like clay. It forms early impressions on what it sees, and these early impressions determine how they see the world and affect their grown-up behavior. It is proven that people who watch violent programs compared to people who do not tend to be more aggressive, have less self-discipline, and patience. Aggressive behavior has many roots. Also, children who watch television or play video games for long hours are less likely to exercise and more likely to be overweight. Viewing TV can be good if it is done in moderation, and if the program being watched is selected. Some TV shows can educate, inform and inspire. It can be more effective than books or audiotapes in teaching your kid about processes like how a plant grows or how to bake a cake.Through media, kids can explore places, animals, or things that...

...Does viewing media violence lead to aggression in children? Younger and younger children our beginning to show increasingly violent behaviour. There has been continuing speculation over the main cause of this. The most important question is whether children being exposed to media violence really does reflect in their behaviour. Recent studies have stated that there is no correlation between media violence and children’s aggressive behaviour. The American Medical Association quoted; ‘Media violence affects children’s behaviour’ this can be explained by the learning approach. There are hundreds of shows which constantly show violence such as ‘wrestling’, ‘the sopranos’ or ‘Eastenders’. The learning approach might suggest that children are imitating the violence they see. Huston et al, 1992 carried out a study proving that once a child becomes eighteen they will have witnessed 200,000 acts of violence on television and in the media, including 40,000 murders. Kaiser Family Foundation 2005 shows that children aged between 8-14 spend more time in front of the computer; television and game consoles than any other activity in their lives expect sleeping. There have been over 1000 studies on the effects of media violence. Most of the studies concluded that; ‘children who watch significant amounts of media violence are more likely to exhibit aggressive behaviour’ – Senate Committee on the Judiciary 1999. Bushman, 2001 said that children are affected by media violence at any age but...

...Neyva Hernandez Jeffery Runyon ENG122 December 11, 2013 How Technology and Social Media Control Children and Adolescents Incredibly many people look at their phones throughout the day to see if they have a text-message, email, notification from social media, missed calls, or simply just because it has become an addiction. Technology has been changing over the years, and new apps and newer upgrades for electronic devices are being developed. High tech is advancing at an incredible rate. Consider how technology has expanded and evolved in the last ten years. How to manage this new phenomenon was not taught to us as children because it did not exist. Many children and adolescents born in the 20th century cannot imagine their lives without TV, smart phones, computers, tablets, or iPods and many other devices; youth have technology surrounding them. As a result, many of the young people raised in the world of technology do not have the same level of emotional skills of those ten or more years ago. Adolescents and children depend on the Internet more than on themselves. They no longer have the same innovativeness. Obesity and cyber bulling has increased over the years. More suicides have occurred. Those who are exposed to violent video games, movies and TV programs have shown aggression. However, parents do not realize how those devices affect their child’s development. Social media already affects many adults; now think about how strongly modern technology affects toddlers...
