Chromatography is the separation of a mixture by passing it in solution. It is used for biological and chemical fields and is used for biochemical research and identification of chemical compounds. It can separate multiple components of a mixture and can detect substance present. The three solutions used in this experiment are acetone, isopropyl alcohol, and water. Acetone is a colorless, flammable liquid that can evaporate easily and is used to dissolve many fats and remove nail polish. It is an organic compound with the formula CH32O and is under the category of Ketones. Isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) is an organic compound which is a colorless and flammable liquid and can evaporate quickly. The formula for isopropyl alcohol is C3H8O.

There are four different pigment groups present in leaves of photosynthesizing plants. Studies indicate that only the chlorophyll IS involved in the actual absorption of light energy and later conversion to chemical energy of living cells.
