In my FE-100 class, I was told by one of my teachers, senior John Hopkins that he would be hosting a study abroad info session for any FE classes. Knowing how much fun and how great of a time my mom had when she decided to go to Rome for a semester, I definitely wanted to see the options that were available to me. The meeting was held right after class in Sellinger Hall, John brought in a lot of guest speakers who have actually just got back from studying abroad from places like Bangkok, Ireland, Australia, and China. First, we went around the room introducing ourselves. Next John passed out a huge handout with all the information on every place we could go studying abroad and what the requirements and prerequisites for each trip. And he also brought up on the computer of how to research them on Loyola’s website if we needed more information. After John talked about the information for almost all of the trips, we got to here experiences from each one of the students that were there. The guy that went to Bangkok spoke first; he told a lot of stories all about how awesome the apartments are, told us how easy it was to keep up with your school work, and how relaxing it was to have two week breaks to just go explore the capitals, mountains, and to take a trip to Hong Kong. On the afternoon of May 20, 2013 an EF5 tornado that struck Moore, Oklahoma, and adjacent areas on the afternoon of May 20, 2013, with peak winds estimated at 210 miles per hour, killing 23 people and injuring 377 others. The storm first struck near Newcastle, Oklahoma, at 2:56 p.m. CDT Monday, 16 minutes after the first warnings went out, according to the National Weather Service. Moore residents had another 30 to 40 minutes before the massive storm entered the western part of the city. On the east side of Moore, Briarwood Elementary was damaged, but everyone made it out alive. At Plaza Towers Elementary, about 75 students and staff members were hunkered down when the tornado struck. Several died at the school, including a number of children. Hall Urban Studies Program, Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, Canada ABSTRACT Global logistics which connects widely dispersed producers and consumers are increasingly organized through gateways and corridors located in urban regions. At the same time, global logistics systems are increasingly infrastructurally, economically and institutionally disconnected from the city-regions that host them. This disconnection raises a series of dilemmas for the host localities. This paper presents a conceptual framework for understanding the dilemmas that confront cities and regions that host national and continental logistics gateways. The framework, which is illustrated with examples from several seaport gateways, focuses on the land use, economic and community development impacts of gateways and corridors on the host city-region. It also pays attention to the differing scales at which these impacts occur; these range from the highly localized to the metropolitan scale. It is proposed that solutions to the local dilemmas of global logistics be evaluated in terms of sustainability criteria, namely efficiency, equity and environment. 1. Because the relocation program failed to keep promises it made to Native Americans, Wilma became an activist fighting for the rights of Native Americans (Wallis). Wilma Mankiller was the first female elected Deputy Chief and later became the first female in modern history to lead a major Native American tribe by becoming the first Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma in 1987. With an enrolled population of over 140,000 members and an annual budget of more than $75 million, her accomplishment is equal to that of a chief executive office of a major corporation (Yannuzzie). Her areas of expertise include community development, public relations, tribal governance, leadership and writing. During her time in office, Wilma faced many challenges and turned them into accomplishments. She bettered the lives of her people by building health clinics, bringing water and electricity to poor communities, and supporting small businesses. These things meant a great deal too many people, but Wilma also tackled big issues like the male-domination of the Cherokee Nation, which went against traditional Cherokee values (Mankiller and Steinem). He ordered an enquiry and went directly to the media with a statement. Over the following 3-week period, resultant adverse media coverage touched close to 1000 clips in print and 120 on TV news channels. In India, where Cadbury is synonymous with chocolate, the company’s reputation and credibility was under intense scrutiny. Sales volumes came down drastically in the first 10 weeks, which was the festival season; retailer stocking and display dropped, employee morale – especially that of the sales team – was shaken. The challenge was to restore confidence in the key stakeholders (consumers, trade and employees, particularly the sales team) and build back credibility for the corporate brand through the same channels (the media) that had questioned it. In defense, Cadbury issued a statement that the infestation was not possible at the manufacturing stage and poor storage at the retailers was the most likely cause of the reported case of worms.
