Given environmental and health considerations, the government authorities need to limit the number of people who live in the slums. Their growth cannot be allowed to continue unfettered because this would create dangerous levels of overcrowding in areas that are already at incendiary levels. When a large number of people are concentrated in small spaces, the chances of adverse events like a disease outbreak, or riots are greatly amplified. This kind of unjust confinement to small spaces pushes people to extremes and greatly harms the individual quality of life. It is not just a violation of the basic rights of people by not providing them with decent housing, but also a grave threat to the health and wellbeing of the citizens. The government should improve the conditions of the slums and ensure that neighborhoods outside of slum …show more content…
Zoning laws that encourage segregation need to be modified and non-profit organizations should be encouraged to build low-cost housing. To assist people to move out of slums all racial barriers in employment, housing and education need to be eliminated so that minorities have the alternative to move out of slum areas. The key is to open up the suburbs for the federal government housing programs to construct low-income housing. To make the effort productive, it is critical that people be given housing in non-slum areas outside the central city. Urban centers are getting overcrowded, and urban renewal is needed. It is grave social injustice for city governments to provide substandard city services like police protection, trash collection, and street cleaning, to slum dwellers. The policies of the Federal Housing Administration have led to high-income people moving to the suburbs, leaving the poor and disadvantaged in the inner city. To ensure basic human rights, slum dwellers should be integrated with other neighborhoods in the suburbs and provided access to good schools and health facilities. This is the key to building a

What drives the dynamics of housing prices across regions is not only of great interest for academic researchers but also of first importance for policy makers. It is also interesting to pay attention to the issue of housing bubbles at a city level and risk allocations from an institutional view. To address the issues, the thesis applies both qualitative and econometric approaches in analyzing the urban housing markets of China. The first paper reviews articles mainly published in Chinese core journals. The existing studies are mainly concerned with such six topics as institutions, policy, land, finance, price and market. The first three topics involve the public housing allocation system reform, such fiscal and monetary tools as tax and interest rate, and the land reserve system. The housing finance treats such subjects of mortgages, bubbles and financial systems...

China’s House Price: Affected by Economic Fundamentals or Real Estate Policy?

...Front. Econ. China 2010, 5(1): 25–51 DOI 10.1007/s11459-010-0002-7 RESEARCH ARTICLE Huayi Yu China’s House Price: Affected by Economic Fundamentals or Real Estate Policy? © Higher Education Press and Springer-Verlag 2010 Abstract Many theory and empirical literature conclude that house price can reflect economic fundamentals in the long-term. However, by using China’s panel data of 35 main cities stretching from 1998 to 2007, we find that there is no stable relationship between house price and economic fundamentals. House price has deviated upward from the economic fundamentals since government started macro-control of the real estate market. We consider that the mechanism between the house price and economic fundamentals is distorted by China’s real estate policy, especially its land policy. Meanwhile the policy itself is an important factor in explaining the changes of China’s house price. Then we estimate the dynamic panel data model on house price and the variables which are controlled by real estate policy. The result shows: land supply has negative effects on house price; financial mortgages for real estate have positive effects on house price; and the area of housing sold and the area of vacant housing, which reflects the supply and demand of the housing market, has negative effects on house price. We also find some differences in house price influence factor between eastern and mid-western cities. Finally, we propose policy suggestions according to the empirical...

Single Room Housing Research Paper

...deinstitutionalization of medically ill, as well as the changes in housing stock, which led to a dramatic decline of single-room housing that began in the 1950s (Coalition). These single-room housing units provided low-cost housing for low-income families due to several factors such as the shared kitchen and bathroom systems (Coalition). “In 1960, by one measure, there were approximately 129,000 single-room housing units citywide. By the 1970s, single-room housing had become the “housing of last resort” for poor single adults, many of whom were disabled, elderly, addicts, or ex-inmates,” (Coalition). Besides the simple cut of single-room housing, this deinstitutionalization led a discharge of tens of thousands of mentally ill individuals to the New York City communities. According to the Coalition for the Homeless, “between 1965 and 1979 alone, the number of resident patients in State psychiatric centers fell from 85,000 to 27,000, which was a 68 percent decline.” This policy of deinstitutionalization was due to new and different medications and new approaches in providing treatment in a community setting. Because of the deinstitutionalization, single-room housing units became a key place for those...

...Improve housing finance access for poor – study May 28, 2015 9:15 pm by VOLTAIRE PALAÑA REPORTER * * * A POLICY paper by the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) is calling for the creation of a more favorable environment for housing finance in the country, as well as the adoption of appropriate policies and mechanisms to correct housing market dysfunctions. One of the underlying issues with housing policies in the Philippines, for instance, is the traditional perception that a housing finance system is based primarily on the provision of government subsidies, resulting in a highly-segmented and unsustainable program that does not benefit those who deserve it most. PIDS senior research fellow Dr. Marife Ballesteros noted in her latest study on urban housing subsidies that, despite policy changes through the years, the public sector housing program still does not address the problems on scale. Ballesteros explained that subsidies for housing programs, whether through upfront grants, government direct funding, low interest mortgages, tax exemptions or underpriced risk insurance, could have been put into more efficient use by the government. “Overall, direct subsidy to the low-income housing sector has been limited,” said Ballesteros, adding that in an effort to reduce losses from financial transactions, government has further restricted financing to the low-income sector through lower exposure of funders and the higher loan ceilings on socialized...

Gentrification

...Research Plan I. Title: Research plan to an area in UK which has potential to become gentrified. II. Investigators Kaie-Liis Asu III. Introduction and goal of the Project This research will be concentrating on using gentrification indicators as a framework to examine and analyse changes to predict the gentrification within community neighbourhoods, to find a solution for an investment company to find an area, which has a potential to become gentrified. The objectives of this programme is to establish and point out the factors influencing gentrification within any town in the world, in this case in United Kingdom, that may be going through gentrification process – changes that result when wealthier people acquire or rent property in low income and working class communities (Grant, 2003). The research needs to be carried out to establish what factors cause gentrification, to examine demographic shifts, how to control gentrification etc...There are two wider areas with main issues that we need to be concentrating, when researching gentrification: Production-supply of 'gentrifiable' property; the workings of housing and land markets; spatial flows of capital and the 'rent-gap'; role of public and private finance; 'uneven development' (Slater, 2000). Consumption- The characteristics of the 'pool of gentrifiers'; 'new middle-class' ideology; consumer demand and consumption practices; (counter) cultural politics; the roles of race, gender and sexuality; education, occupational...

Factors Influencing Consumers Towards Flats and Lands

...now living in urban areas and 34% will be living by 2015 (REHAB, 2004) and 50% by 2025 (Singha D., 2001). Among the Asian countries Bangladesh is the fourth largest with the population of 142 million (BBS 2011), but in terms of the density of population Bangladesh ranked fifth where 1101 people live in a square kilometer. Increased population growth generally represents problems for a country – because of increased need for food, cloths, accommodation, infrastructure, and services. Being a least developed country like Bangladesh, it is hardly possible to deal with the complex problems of allocating scarce resources among the competing needs. More so, the problem is very much accelerated by the migrating population approaching the large cities for job and vocation. Thus, the incremental population create a permanent accommodation problem as to share very limited...

...Regional Rail i. Historical Background ii. Governance and Investment Transit and Commuting i. Yanjiao: Excess commute ii. King of Prussia: Reverse Commute Discussion and Conclusion Appendix: Images Bibliography Introduction In recent decades, one of the main arguments in relation to increasing transport demand and changing commuting pattern has focused on urban growth. Many existing studies have found strong evidence between land development and travel behaviors. Global urban sprawl has been accompanied by changes in individuals’ housing and employment locations, which in turn brings changes in commuting time, distance and destination. However, there are relatively few studies that explore the role of public transportation in this linkage. Revealing the form and function of public transit can explain existing transport commuting dilemma and argue for long-term management strategies. This paper therefore focuses on the role of public transportation in spatial development-travel behavior linkage and raises the following question: can...

Homeless Veterans Case Study

...Homeless Encampments in America’s West Coast Cities There are the individuals who have analyzed the improvement of costly camps as far as tramps managing with the abandoned and under-used zones of the city left to them. The sample used in the research paper incorporate the destitute shantytown in Tucson, Arizona, at the focal point of Snow and on the spatial imperatives of destitute survival, and the different stories on the homeless people who possessed the abandoned Amtrak yards in the gluttons of New York City (Herring, 2014). Portraying settlements as politicized locales of a challenge, from one viewpoint, and zones of disregarded destitution, the current studies point to the irregularity in both the structure and elements of these new islands of the periphery and the points of imprisonment of restricted background analyzes (Herring, 2014). The selected study overcomes these constraints through the experimental development and hypothetical expansion. The study highlights twelve places to stay in eight regions on the west point within an unsociable systematic structure; this study gives the principal similar examination of variegated types of poor settlement in the United States. In addition, by translating the exclusionary procedures of local state offices and vagrants in extensive scale places to stay, the study reconsiders existing speculations of urban disengagement, rejection, and regulation of innovative changes in modern cities (Herring, 2014). Homelessness in California

...interference allowed of the federal government into this policy of homelessness, which had created many issues. For many years after that, this issue of homelessness remained on the top of the line in the political issues face by the Californian government. Basically the non-profit organizations focused on improving the life quality of the people in the city, especially those who did not have a place to spend their nights. It is a fact that there should be some very efficient approach to eliminate this homelessness problem, the Californian government has taken some steps and brought in a modest change in their policies to attack this homelessness problem very obviously. Their main change in the policy was to provide housing to the poor and the needy people (Hombs, Mary Ellen, and Mitch Snyder, 1982). Despite this action which the government took, there had been a consensus in the year 1980 which reflected the fact that the homelessness in US and in California have been substantially increasing in the year. Social scientists (Jencks, 1994), after conducting a huge survey, came to a conclusion that the ability to afford housing had less influence in the homelessness than the mental illness resulting from the increase in the use of drugs. Discussion O’Flaherty (1996) has been questioning various conventions. There had been 3...
