The Trickster and Captain Jack Sparrow

The trickster is a mythical figure, which brings about a boon of healing and rebirth. Trickster is able to heal a crowd by laughter. He is able to do so by using his unrestrained imagination of telling the truth and saying things as is. He always finds a way out of social constraints and is able to spread his healing all over. In Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Captain Jack Sparrow illustrates this by finding a way out of social constraint, telling the truth, and ultimately saving everyone by being the fool he is. Although many things may get in the way of retrieving his freedom, Captain Sparrow is always able to find a way out of constraining social constructs. When he first arrives in Port Royal a toll collector stops him. Successfully he is able to get through by bribing his way out by offering three “shillings” but being a pirate as he is, he steals the toll collector’s bag and acquires more money than he gave. He is also able to find a hole to escape when Commodore Norrington and the British Navy catch him after saving Miss Elizabeth Swann. When he is handcuffed he uses them and Elizabeth to escape. Also, because he knows that the British Navy does not trust him, he skillfully tricks them. With the help of William Turner he steals the Commodore’s ship with a few tricks up his sleeve. He pretends to steal one ship to gain another. Again he finds a way out from the Commodore and the British Navy.

Tricksters are known as healing with the use of the medicine laughter by telling the truth. Captain Sparrow tells the truth although no one believes him. When two British navy men asks him what is his purpose in Port Royal he tells them the truth that he is there to commandeer one of the ships. One of the navy men doesn’t believe him so Captain Sparrow says, “Unless he knew you wouldn’t believe the truth, even if he told you.” Another example of truth is when William Turner confesses that he makes all of the weapons and practices with them three hours a day. Captain Sparrow replies, “You need to find yourself a girl, mate. Or perhaps the only reason you practice three hours a day is because you found one and are otherwise incapable of wooing said strumpet,” which refers to Elizabeth. Despite the fact that Captain Sparrow was not appropriately introduced to William at that time he is capable of knowing the truth between him and Elizabeth. William Turner may hate pirates but Captain Sparrow tells him that he is starting to become a pirate, which is true. William “sprung a man from jail, commandeered a ship of the fleet, sailed with a buccaneer crew out of Tortuga, and [he] is completely obsessed with treasure.” Although William denies being obsessed with treasure he is obsessed. The treasure is Elizabeth. Captain Sparrow always thinks fast to save himself and again finds a way out. One scene he shows that is when Captain Barbosa caught him in the cave when he and his crew try to lift the curse of the Black Pearl. Right before Captain Barbosa’s crew was to kill him he brings up that he knows whose blood they need. Not only did Captain Sparrow save himself from social constraints but he also helps William and Elizabeth in the process. He helps them be closer than ever and also helps them realize that they love each other. If it wasn’t for the help of Captain Sparrow, William wouldn’t be able to save Elizabeth from Captain Barbosa. Although William is out of her league they fought against the social order and was able to be together in the end. Captain Jack Sparrow, through his experiences as a pirate and a trickster, is capable of bringing a boon of healing and rebirth not only to whomever he comes across but to the audience as well. The audience is being healed by the magic of laughter. Captain Sparrow brings about comedy to the world by being who and what he is, a fool. Pirates of the Caribbean may be an action filled adventure but with the help of Captain Jack Sparrow it is able to make the audience feel joy and happiness once they finish the movie. This boon proves that he is a hero inside and outside of Pirates.

Disliking Books

...because of this. He had refused to read anything other than comic books and sports books as a kid because he did not want to be picked on for being a “bookworm” too. By the time Gerald reached college he hadn’t known what to major in and he defaulted to majoring in English. Even as an English major student, Gerald found it hard to read “serious” literature. He found it hard to relate, he “saw little that could resemble his experience”. An interest in reading had started sparked to form in Gerald after he had read “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”. He was intrigued to learn that there had been a disagreement over the true ending of the book. He was tasked with discussing the ending of the book with his classmates and there he found his confidence. Discussing books made Gerald go back, re-read books and discover things he hadn’t noticed before and to view his literature from different points of view. Gerald later on recalls that it was the “critical conversation” he needed, that held him back from fully accessing literary text. Leaving Gerald alone with just the literature wouldn’t allow him to get “deeper” or more into the text, instead its different interpretations and theories that allowed one to truly immerse themselves in literature. Response: Gerald’s story was one I found very interesting a relatable. As a younger student I often discarded the books I was assigned to read and instead was fascinated by comics. Similar to Gerald all that changed when in high school I...

What Literacy Means to Alexie

...What does Literacy mean to Alexie? It all started out with a comic book; a superman comic book that opened up three year old Alexie’s eyes to success. Along with learning to read by himself by looking at comic books and trying to associate words with pictures came different struggles, his parent’s not being able to afford great books, spending his whole day trying to learn how to make the words become real to him, and of course the biggest struggle; his peers making fun of him for being smart. For Alexie to go through all of these struggles alone; learning to read and write must mean something more than just scanning through words on a page or writing the alphabet mixed up in different combinations, it must mean something much greater. The first thing that shows that Literacy means something more to Alexie is that it means being sufficiently educated with his writing and reading skills. Alexie’s wild adventure began with opening a comic book back when he was three years old. He had tried to associate the words and the pictures to try to teach him-self how to read. To this day, he cannot recall exactly what the comic book was, but he was indeed successful. After trying to read that comic book, Alexie wanted more, he didn’t want to learn how to read; in his mind, he had to. Alexie’s Father was an avid reader and I believe that Alexie got the idea to teach him-self to read because he wanted to be just like his father. The family was not rich; very far from it, but Alexie’s...

A Moment of Understanding

...But, in class, I was hit by an inspiring sentence: nothing can surpass light except our mind since it is our mind that enables us to look back and foresee our future. These memorable words deepened my understanding of the power of mind. Looking back, we may encounter extreme fears, something we don’t want to bring up, and hope to be forever hidden. We may be trapped in adverse situations, where we are helpless and confused in face of the incomprehensible nature. But just as Einstein said, the only incomprehensible thing about the universe is that it is comprehensible. The short-lived biped on a two-bit planet can still move forward and make miracles, because the power of mind, which exceeds any speed in universe, can bring us faith and spirit. Eventually, this power could surpass our fears, and destroy all the negative conditions. This reminds me of the stories of some great minds, such as Steve Jobs, the legendary former CEO of Apple. When Steve had just released his first creation—the Macintosh, he got fired from Apple, the company he started. Very publicly out at that time, he lost the focus of his entire adult life. He really did not know what to do for a few months and even thought about running away from the valley, erasing all the failure experiences. However, thinking of the past, he found that he still loved what he did. “Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith.” Steve said. It is this faith in his mind that helped him defeat all the painful...

...Are Angels Real? Read This Story and Decide for Yourself An Angelic Encounter This is a personal story that happened to me. Some people read this and say that they believe I was visited by angels. Others say it is bogus. Read it and tell me what you think. The verse that corresponds to this first story is: Hebrews 13:2 - Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. I used live out of town so my rides either headed back into town or way out toward the middle of nowhere on the highway headed to the next town. The highways of New Mexico are usually sparsely traveled. On this particular day, I was battling a headwind and it was a bit of struggle.
