Introduction We will take a look at the different dynamics that leadership, group develop, and management as it relates to group synergy, group member roles, leadership in groups, conflict within and between groups, and communication in groups.

Group Synergy Synergy as defined in Working in Groups, is "the cooperative interaction of several factors that result in a combined effect that is greater than the sum of individual contributions (Engleberg & Wynn 2013)." Synergy applied to groups and teams means much more than just working together. …show more content…
(Engleberg & Wynn, 2013, p. 173). According to the authors, the sources of three types of conflict are substantive or ideas and issues, affective or emotions and relationships, and procedural or methods and processes. In the traditional view of conflict, the word conflict implies a negative connotation. It was seen as a ?dysfunctional outcome resulting from poor communication, a lack of openness and trust between people and the failure of managers to be responsible to the needs and aspirations of their employees? (Robbins & Judge 2016). This being said, there is also an interactionist view of conflict which suggests that there is a functional and dysfunctional form of conflict. Functional conflict results in improving team performances whereas dysfunctional conflict hinders or blocks group …show more content…
In this style, there are winners and losers. It is effective when you are passionate about a topic, or there are high consequences of the group's decisions. Inappropriately used, this conflict style can be damaging to relationships as it requires a very assertive way to achieve your goals. This style can also be at the expense of others. Compromising conflict style is a "lose-lose" scenario where neither party gets what they want. There is a lot of cooperation and is normally the fair method of resolving any issues. This conflict style should be practiced when other methods are not working, and there is a time constraint in decision making. Collaboration conflict style is where you partner up to search for a solution to achieve all goals on both sides. This style encourages innovation in ideas and requires agreement from all parties. The cons of this style are that it is time-consuming and requires all members to commit to the final decision.

Furthermore, 37 percent of those employees speak limited English. Given this, hospitality managers must find ways to effectively communicate with their employees. This paper seeks to address these issues. Design/methodology/approach – The methodology employed a perspective-taking manipulation. Participants were placed in the role of an individual that does not speak the native language that is used in the workplace. Groups were measured on performance, quality, and accuracy. Groups were video-taped to measure frequency of non-verbal behaviors. Participants were surveyed to measure their levels of positivity. Findings – The results of this study identified effective non-verbal communication strategies for managers (combination of gestures, demonstrating, and pointing). When the leader used these strategies, the groups were able to complete the recipes faster. Managers who spoke another language expressed a more positive behavior towards the group.
