The Marine Corps noncommissioned officer (NCO) is the small unit leader that is out there taking charge during times of war and peace. The Marine NCO is the embodiment of the Corps’ history and traditions because through out history NCO’s have successfully led their Marines in combat and put their lives on the line for their fellow Marines. The first ever Marine to earn the Medal of Honor was an NCO. Sergeant John F. Mackie received a Medal of Honor when he was a Corporal in 1862 in the Battle of Drewry’s Bluff. While their ship was under attack, Sergeant Mackie led his Marines to return fire at the enemy after several other Marines were dead and wounded. During this battle he displayed all of the Corps’ leadership traits.
