COMMUNICATION IN MY WORKPLACE

2

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate my current workplace in the light of the theories and

characteristics of managerial communication that I am currently studying, and to identify and

illustrate two characteristics of communication that I have observed first-hand. I have chosen

the communication climate, and the importance of feedback and measures of effectiveness as

the topic of my paper. I intend to show the current problems which are rooted in ineffective

communication, and apply the most effective theories of managerial communication. I will

discuss a top-down communications strategy for management, as well as some ways that

employee initiative can improve the situation.

The Effects of the Communication Climate and Strategies to Obtain Feedback

Upon applying strategic analysis to my workplace, a group of clinics owned by a mid-

sized community hospital, I have identified two characteristics of communication which need to

be improved. A focus on improving these characteristics only would create a more productive

work environment, which is the main goal of management, but would also create better morale,

employee unity, and ultimately, a better environment of care for the patient.

The first characteristic that I will examine is the communication climate of our

organization. The development of trust may seem to be an elusive goal, but based on research,

is something that through a focused effort on communication is not as difficult as it may seem.

...[MY EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION EXPERIENCE IN THE WORKPLACE] [LATOYA REDD] STRAYER UNIVERSITY BUSINESS 100 INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS PROFESSOR EDDIE ALFORD FEBRUARY 11, 2016 Abstract [The paper is about effective communication in the workplace. Communication is essential to workplace. Many employers train their employees on communication skills. It can be your friend or your worst enemy. Needless to say it will improve your overall workplace culture. Communication problems are going to come up and business and employees must understand how to handle these problems.] On a hot beautiful summer day in my room, as I prepare myself for work, I start thinking to myself. I realized that Im about to start a new job, and in reality that means I have to communicate with new people. All kinds of thoughts are going through my head. Are these co-workers going to be nice or co-workers from hell. Being that I am not unfamiliar with how to handle this issue, I think to myself “ you are well prepared for this and your communication skills are over the chart of excellent”. However, to overcome effective communication in the workplace comes with how you present yourself, how well you listen, and how you handle the outcome. First of all, I would like to say I feel that I communicate very well with people at my workplace. I currently work for a production company, so we work as a team. So when working as a team I present myself to my co-workers as an outgoing, easy going and easy to get...

Business communication comes in all forms, but it isn’t all about what you know. Some forms of business communication or verbal, and non verbal. Business communication plays a great role in my day to day activities at work. My job as a military liaison is to travel throughout the Midwest and speak to military service members about their educational goals. In addition to that, I call and follow up with all of the service members who request more information about their specific situations. Business communication is the biggest part of my day to day activities at work. Business communication helps me manage my daily work activities because business communication can consist of phone calls, emails, and verbal communication. My professional email account helps me manage verbal conversations that I had with someone. In my position I speak with hundreds of people a week and I ask a lot of them to email me. This allows me to have a record of our conversation and to properly follow up with them if needed. On the other hand, I have a lot of phone conversations with people and this allows me to manage a lot of business contacts on a daily basis. In my current workplace I have...

Research Proposal. Communication Assistance

...Date: December 27, 2011 Subject: Communication Assistance Attached you will find my proposal to implement communication assistance in the housekeeping department. I feel that with this little extra effort on my part, we are able to accomplish this assistance. The housekeeping department currently has many non-English speaking employees. With the communication assistance I have planned out it will not only benefit our department but also the Marriott. With all the hard work it could be a company wide acceptance for a new policy. There is a possibility that when this is complete the other employees could step in and help with defining the process. Doing this as a whole department will make all the employee’s feel like they are a big part of this accomplishment. This will also boost the ego of the department which will enhance customer service. As I have understood you have tried this before but it was not effective. With the hard work that I have put into this we will make it successful for everybody. So with the existing information and new information we have a much better chance of success. Non Verbal Communication in the Workplace

...Nonverbal Communication In The Workplace Edward G. Wertheim, Ph.D. says “People in organizations typically spend over 75% of their time in interpersonal situations” (Wertheim P. 1). Even though we are all capable of communicating, not everyone is an effective communicator. The ability to communicate effectively is essential in the workplace. I am going to focus on the importance of becoming a more effective communicator in the workplace through nonverbal communication. Kory Floyd suggests that we often relay more information through nonverbal communication, than we do by using words alone (Floyd p. 211). Floyd suggests that since our nonverbal communication is going to convey the majority have what we intend to say it is important to understand what our nonverbal behavior is saying and it is also important to use how to use nonverbal communication to our advantage. Generally, when people hear the word nonverbal they think of hand gestures and facial expressions. However, there is much more to it than that. Edward G. Wertheim, Ph.D., explains that nonverbal communication consists of 4 parts: visual, tactile, vocal and use of time, space and image (p. 2). I am going to focus on the visual part of nonverbal communication. The clothing that we wear, our hair style, and the way we present ourselves in the workplace can have great influence over others’ perception of us. Depending on the nature of your business or line of work this can all vary in importance, for example: if...
