Today I spent 12 hours with my supervisor in an assignment that involved many different kinds of interactions. I had to navigate between being a student interpreter, someone active in the conversations, and someone who did not have to interpret because the hearing people involved knew ASL. At first, I was a little confused as to how to be all of those roles and also how to make my presence in the environment as unobtrusive as possible. With time I was able to be more natural and comfortable, but it was interesting to see the different job demands in this kind of setting.
I have been reading Redefining the Role of the Community Interpreter: The Concept of Role-Space. The book explores our role as community interpreters and how unique that role

Soot Framework

...1. Introduction Java language is a hybrid language neither compiled, nor interpreted. The Java language aims to provide the speed of a compiled language, as well as portability of an interpreted language. Because a java code can run on any platform with Java Virtual Machine installed some drawbacks are introduced in terms speed of the execution compared to compiler languages such as C and C++. To make the java code as portable as it is, after compilation, the java code is converted into a bytecode. A bytecode is then interpreted by the Java Virtual Machine. To take advantage of Java language and to speed up performance, sophisticated optimization techniques must be utilized. Among many methods of optimizations, such as directly manipulating the bytecode, or annotating the bytecode, “The Soot Framework” is a well developed tool for optimizing the java bytecode to improve performance. The Soot Framework manipulates and modifies any java code and generates an optimized bytecode. The optimized bytecode can be run on any Java Virtual Machine. The soot framework is designed in a way that java code can be optimized module by module, or the whole program. 2. The project Our team consists of Shivshankar Kanawade, Batbold Myagmarjav, and Taeghyun Kang. The project is to research the possibility of automatically detecting shared variables in a concurrent program utilizing The Soot Framework. The team also seeks to identify the shared variable characteristics with the help of intermediate...

Work Analysis

...attitudes, and performance (Noe, et al. 2006). An analysis of work is considered a building block for most HR systems in organizations. Corporate restructuring processes, quality improvement programs, human resource planning, job design, recruitment strategies, training programs, succession planning, and compensation systems are among the other HR activities that are based on work analysis (Bernardin, 2008). Choosing a job that interested me to perform a work analysis was not easy; I really wanted to take this opportunity to put to work the information learned in Chapter 3 and 4 of our class with a job that it always interested me in learning on how they perform their job and what it takes to do the job. I chose a sign language interpreter from my previous job at the National Institutes of Health, Clinical Center. I worked for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center for 7 years and felt totally committed in complying with their mission to clinical research. The NIH Clinical Center (CC) is the clinical research hospital for the National Institutes of Health. It's the nation's largest hospital devoted entirely to clinical research. Through clinical research, clinician-investigators translate laboratory discoveries into better treatments, therapies and interventions to improve the nation's health. About 1,500 clinical research studies currently are active at the NIH Clinical Center. About half are the first tests of new drugs or medical treatment in people...

Pt1420 Researching Variable Naming Rules

...Visual Basic has been labeled to be the most successful programming language in the history of programming. In 1991, Microsoft built Visual Basic on the older BASIC language – Beginner’s All purpose Symbolic Instruction Code (Mabutt). In the late 1980s, Alan Cooper, owner of Tripod, developed drag-and-drop interface, Ruby, which was also an influence to the idea of Visual Basic (History of Visual Basics). Just like any spoken language, rules must be followed in order to create effective communication between two people. For programming languages, it is necessary to follow all naming rules in order to build the program. Visual Basic’s variable name rules are as follows: Up to 255 characters, names must begin with a letter, no embedded spaces or special characters are to be used besides the underscore “__”, there cannot be a reserved word, uppercase and lowercase should be used with a purpose, and names cannot be repeated with the same level of scope (Visual Basic Naming Rules). If a developer does not follow these rules when using Visual Basic, there will be errors that may occur even before the program can be tested. Python Python is another common programming language, and was influenced by the design of ABC (Lukaszewski). In the 1996, Guido van Rossum created his very own version of ABCs, which we all know now as Python (Lukaszewski). Python is a basic syntax used for statement grouping, a list, strings, and numbers (Lukaszewski). Because it is another programming language...

Examples of application software are CRM software, ERP software, accounting, graphics, and media software. 2.) What does it mean when we say that an interpreter both “Translates and Executes” Instructions? In the case of the interpreter, it translates and executes each line of codes one line at a time. Thus if the program has syntax errors (violation of program rule) lower down in the code, you never know until the interpreter reaches to that statement. 3.) Explain the “fectch-decode-execute” cycle. In the first step, fetch instruction, the processor fetches the instruction from the memory. The instruction is transferred from memory to instruction register. The processor is ready to fetch instruction. The instruction pointer contains the address 0100 contains the instruction MOV AX, 0. The memory places the instruction on the data bus. The processor then copies the instruction from the data bus to the instruction register. In the second step, decode instruction, the instruction is decoded by the processor. For example, the...

Edit, Compile, Load, Verify and Execute We look over all the above mentioned phases in a bit detail. First consider the following figure that summarizes the all phases of a java program. Phase 1 Editor Disk Program is created in the editor and stored on disk. Compiler creates bytecodes and stores them on disk. Phase 2 Compiler Disk Primary Memory Phase 3 Class Loader Class loader puts bytecodes in memory. Jhumpa Lahiri Relationships

...Jhumpa Lahiri is an Indian American author who won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for her book Interpreter Of Maladies. The book is a collection of short stories that addresses the topic of romantic relationships and marriages of Indian Americans, who are entangled in a new culture (the United States). Lahiri illustrates the nature of relationships throughout her book. She includes examples of love and tolerance. However, I believe that Lahiri puts the most emphasis in exploring the portrayal of romantic relationships as a type of malady with accompanying symptoms. One symptom that indicated the malady of marriage is the lack of communication. This is most easily seen in Shoba’s and Shukumar’s relationship in “A temporary Matter”. Their breaking down of communication is driven by their...

Themes of Interpreter of Maladies

...Themes of “Interpreter of Maladies” In the “Interpreter of Maladies” different themes are used throughout the story. The use of these different themes enables the reader to become aware of what the author is trying to get across to he or she. The themes in “Interpreter of Maladies” include marriage/love, communication, and environment/nature. With each taking on a role of its own, the story becomes both compelling and informative. Marriage and love comes across as complicated in the story. A marriage is known to be the start of a beautiful partnership between two people who love each other. In “Interpreter of Maladies” marriage is just that but also much more. It is secrets, regret, and mystery. Although Twinkle and Sanjeev are married under their own free will it comes across, as the two are strangers. No matter the romantic feelings that come about the couple remains individuals in their own right. As a direct result Sanjeev is regretting the love he has for his wife. Although as it progresses the narrator shows us that distance can sometimes be closed by shared experiences. When Shukumar and Shoba deal with the death of their child, the bond between the two strengthens. The story shows us that love can be found in the most unexpected ways and can alter in the event of a joint experience. The lack of communication weighs on several characters throughout the story. While Shukumar and Shaba are individually consumed by their own grief they fail to communicate...
