Discussion: Computer Hardware Components

There where several different articles that I found that talked extensively about different computer hardware components. The one component that I found that was interesting and that I never know how many different computer components go into it is graphics cards. Graphics cards use every part of a computer to function correctly and they are built right into the card its self. They have their own RAM, some have their own power supply and they even have their own type of CPU that is called a graphics processing unit or GPU.

The author, Jeff Tyson, went into detail on how the graphics card takes information from the CPU and makes it into a picture on your monitor.
Tyson (2001) brock it down into lemans terms by saying:

Think of a computer as a company with its own art department. When people in the company want a piece of artwork, they send a request to the art department. The art department decides how to create the image and then puts it on paper. The end result is that someone's idea becomes an actual, viewable picture. (P.1)

I think it is just amazing on how the simple little card can take information and know how to put it on the monitor as a picture. What is even more amazing is how it works with gaming and is able to make these calculations that fast without any issues, that’s if you have the card that can handle the game. Most standard motherboards come with some type of graphics card but if you want to do more then just surfing the web and checking emails you need to up-grade to a more high quality card. These high quality cards are normally easy to spot as they have fans and/or heat sinks along with illustrations on them, but for the everyday regular use of a computer the cards that come with it are efficient.

Computer Organization

...Computer Organization The dictionary definition of the term “organizing” is “to put together into an orderly, functional, structured whole”. Therefore, this term applies to Computer Organization because it tries “to put together into an orderly, functional, structured whole” the main components of computers and the way computers are organized. Modern computer technology requires professionals of every computing specialty to understand both hardware and software. The interaction between hardware and software at a variety of levels also offers a framework for understanding the fundamentals of computing. Whether our primary interacts is hardware or software, Information Technology, Computer Science or Electrical Engineering, the central ideas in Computer Organization is the same. Thus, the emphasis of this is to show the relationship between hardware and software and to focus on the concepts that are the basis for current computers. The computer lies at the heart of computing. Without it, most of the computing disciplines today would be a branch of theoretical mathematics. To be a professional in any field of computing today, one should not regard the computer as just black box that executes program by magic. We, students of computing should acquire some understanding and appreciation of a computer system’s functional components, their characteristics, their performance, and their instruction. There are practical implications as well. In describing computer systems, a distinguishing...

...COMPUTER BASICS Seema Sirpal Delhi University Computer Centre What is a Computer? An electronic device that stores, retrieves, and processes data, and can be programmed with instructions. A computer is composed of hardware and software, and can exist in a variety of sizes and configurations. Hardware & Software The term hardware refers to the physical components of your computer such as the system unit, mouse, keyboard, monitor etc. The software is the instructions that makes the computer work. Software is held either on your computers hard disk, CD-ROM, DVD or on a diskette (floppy disk) and is loaded (i.e. copied) from the disk into the computers RAM (Random Access Memory), as and when required. Types of Computers Mini and Mainframe Computers Very powerful, used by large organisations such an banks to control the entire business operation. Very expensive! Personal Computers Cheap and easy to use. Often used as stand-alone computers or in a network. May be connected to large mainframe computers within big companies. ...ICT 1.DEVICE DRIVER In computing, a device driver or software driver is a computer program allowing higher-level computer programs to interact with a hardware device. A driver typically communicates with the device through the computer bus or communications subsystem to which the hardware connects. When a calling program invokes a routine in the driver, the driver issues commands to the device. Once the device sends data back to the driver, the driver may invoke routines in the original calling program. Drivers are hardware-dependent and operating-system-specific. They usually provide the interrupt handling required for any necessary asynchronous time-dependent software interface. Purpose A device driver simplifies programming by acting as translator between a hardware device and the applications or operating systems that use it. Programmers can write the higher-level application code independently of whatever specific hardware the end-user is using. Physical layers communicate with specific device instances. For example, a serial port needs to handle standard communication protocols such as XON/XOFF that are common for all serial port hardware. This would be managed by a serial port logical layer. However, the physical layer needs to communicate with a particular serial port chip. 16550 UART hardware differs from PL-011. The physical layer addresses these chip-specific variations. Conventionally, OS requests go to the logical layer first. In turn, the logical layer calls...

...which other system components rely. The purpose of this chapter is to discuss IT subjects in detail—especially as they relate to AISs. Because most students in AIS courses have already taken a survey computer class, the discussions here are brief. This chapter may nonetheless serve as a review of computer hardware and software concepts or as a study of how IT helps organizations accomplish strategic accounting goals. It is helpful to view an accounting information system as a set of five interacting components: (1) hardware, (2) software, (3) data, (4) people, and (5) procedures. Computer hardware is probably the most tangible element in this set, but ‘‘hardware’’ is only one piece of the pie—and not necessarily the most important piece. For example, most organizations spend more money on people (in wages and salaries) than on computer hardware and software combined. Similarly, computer hardware must work together with the other system components to accomplish data processing tasks. Without computer software, for example, the hardware would stand idle. Without data to process, both the hardware and the software would be useless. Without procedures, accounting data could not be gathered accurately or distributed properly. And finally, without people, it is doubtful that the rest of the system could operate for long or be of much use. What all this means is that ‘‘information technology’’ is a fuzzy term that includes more than computer hardware. In this chapter,...

Hardware is the physical equipment of a computer system, including the central processing unit (CPU), data-storage devices, terminals, printer, etc. Software is a program or set of instructions or rules that control the operation of a computer. The most obvious hardware component is the computer case. The case is where size comes into play. A bigger case allows more room for components. A bigger case is most often used for servers. For basic home computing needs, a small or mid-sized case is most common. Cases also come in many colors mainly for user preference. The most important component for a bare bones PC is the motherboard, a printed circuit board where the processing components are connected. The motherboard itself is just a piece of fiberglass. It's actually the hardware mounted on it that does all the work in the computer. The motherboard connects directly or indirectly to every other part of the computer. IT is the "heart" of your PC. It handles the CPU and all system memory. It accepts expansion devices such as sound and network cards, and modems. Without the motherboard everything is useless. The motherboard receives its power from the power supply. The power supply is the metal box usually found in a corner of the case. The power supply...
