The Effects of Personality Types and Gender Roles on Conflict Management Styles

Introduction This paper explores the question does personality types and gender roles affect conflict management styles. The research done in this study does support that personality types and gender roles affects the conflict management style of an individual. The personality of an individual can also give insight on how that individual manages conflict (Ome, 2013, pg. 5513). This study is significant because conflicts are essential to interpersonal relationships. Through conflicts, interpersonal relationships are maintained because they can signal a need for change. …show more content…
Understanding the factor that affect how people manage conflict can help one become a more competent conflict communicator. Each conflict is different from relationship to relationship. Factors such as the type of relationship, the importance of the relationship, and the importance of the conflict affect how conflicts are handled. (Weitzman, 2001, pg. 62). “Personality does seem to play an important role in determining conflict behaviors,” (David, 1998, pg. 2), however research done by Kurdek found that the satisfaction of each person in the relationship is what affects whether or not conflicting strategies will be constructive or deconstructive (1995, pg. 153). Similar to Kurdek, Neff and Harter found that components of the relationship, such as the how connected both individuals, are within the relationship affects conflict management styles (2002, pg. 403). According to Linda Stamato’s, the most effective way to manage conflict is to use the collaborative style (1992, pg.378). The collaborating style of conflict provides a solution that fits both parties’ needs. The competing style is a goal-oriented, authoritarian approach to problem solving. The avoiding style of conflict is a non-confrontational approach to problem solving. The accommodating style of conflict is the approach to maintain relationships and the compromising style of conflict is a middle ground approach. On the assessment, the participants are asked to answer questions regarding how they manage conflicts by rating the situation (1) Rarely, (2) Sometimes, (3) Often, or (4) Always. The questions are then separated by the conflict styles and totaled.
Results
The purpose of this study was to determine if personality types affect a gender’s conflict management style. To obtain this information the participants were given a personality test and the participants were also asked to fill out a conflict management style questionnaire.

Table 1A: Male and Female Personality Types

Table 1A shows that 60% male participants have a choleric personality type and 40% of males were charted as having a phlegmatic personality type. Of the female participants 30% found to have the choleric personality type and the sanguine personality type.
