...com/locate/lrp Innovation Games: A New Approach to the Competitive Challenge ´ Roger Miller, Xavier Olleros and Luis Molinie Innovation is often perceived as an unmanageable phenomenon. Bets are placed on new products with the hope that a few winners will compensate for the many losers. At best, sophisticated selection procedures impose a certain discipline and provide guidance for containing costly errors. The research that we have conducted yields a more nuanced view. Innovation, we have found, becomes manageable when managers move away from universalistic prescriptions and recognise that different rules and practices apply in different contexts. Our main argument is that both executives and public officials need to learn from the new realities of innovation. Instead of being a uniform process, innovation takes place in seven distinct ‘games’, focusing on market creation, market maintenance and innovator support. Rules for managing innovation are neither generic best practices that can be applied universally, nor narrow industry-specific recipes. Instead, distinct contexts call for specific strategies and rules to create and capture market value. Thus, innovation games are not predetermined sets of rules but leave ample room for creative competition and collaboration. Our approach urges business executives and academics to reassess the validity of conventional approaches, no matter how well established. Managers should worry far less about imitating industry best practices, and more...

...Executive Summary: Nintendo adopted a differentiation strategy with its seventh generation console the Wii, while simultaneously deciding to focus on serving buyers comprising of a narrow market niche. Rather than building a console with new graphic features and technological capability in to the console itself, the company concentrated on pioneering a daringly different video game controller. The bold new approach allowed Nintendo to tap into an entirely new demographic and to engage new players of video games. Combining these two strategic approaches propelled the company to become the market leader in sales of the third generation video game consoles, far surpassing Sony’s PlayStation 3 (PS3) and Microsoft’s Xbox 360. Nintendo is currently facing two significant problems: 1. The immediate concern is that the company is unable to meet the demand for the Wii console which continues to sell out in stores. 2. The long term issue that needs to be addressed is whether the company can identify and invest in innovations that would allow Nintendo to continue to expand in the market, while resisting a significant attack from its competition. In order to analyze the issues in detail a SWOT, PESTE, financial, and competitive analysis were performed. The findings indicated that the company differentiates itself from the competition with a high emphasis on product differentiation; it is quite susceptible to competition; and that the release of the Wii console has improved...

...Grace Lau December 18, 2014 Page 2 Conclusions and Recommendation Based on our research and facts provided to us, the consulting bill of WesternGraphics and staff salaries should be expensed as either incurred or when the first time the marketing project starts (FASB ASC 720-35-25). You could capitalize the costs incurred only if the costs qualify as direct response advertising. According to FASB ASC 340-20, direct response advertising costs are intended “to elicit sales to customers who should be shown to have responded specifically to the advertising and that result in probable future benefits”. Although there might be future benefits resulting from marketing strategy, the company didn't create any tangible or intangible asset. The slogan created by WesternGraphics has been rejected and no asset has been created on the company books. In our opinion, the consulting fees and staff salary didn't create an asset either. Since the company operates in a highly competitive industry, it’s uncertain whether the company will derive future benefits from marketing strategy. The asset is unidentified and generally such costs should be expensed. Although the company created the game (an asset), the consulting fees and staff salaries incurred do not qualify as production costs to be capitalized. According to FASB 985-2025, only costs “of producing product masters incurred subsequent to establishing technological feasibility shall be capitalized. Those costs include coding and testing...

...My presentation of the analysis of this case would be very specific and to the point. I would relate to certain broad strategy areas and describe them in enough depth to help understand the concept, without going into the complete details. Post analysis of the Harley Davidson turn-around, I see the activities and planning involved by the entire management team, to be somewhat as highlighted below. I would also link these aspects with an (I) Internal and (E) External stakeholder sign, for the purpose of understanding the relationships involved in this re-engineering process. Educate (I+E) -> Create Need (E) -> Supply (E) -> Post-Sales (I+E) -> Promote Loyalty(E) -> Best Practices (E) -> Educate (I+E) Harley Davidson's (HD) entire turnaround effort since 1981 can be bulleted within these critical areas of improvement. More specifically, we could categorize all these above initiatives and more, within three functional areas of priority. Create Demand, Produce Product & Provide Support. Create Demand- a. Branding (E)- The HD leadership embarked on a mission to re-brand their image, and successfully did so with their Ford Truck Initiative and the Diverse Customer Base product positioning. They appealed to a larger population base, than the company had ever done in its history. b. Customer Loyalty (E)- HD had a strong customer base, but with a rapidly ageing customer population the company took some initiatives in developing customer loyalty- to further their brand...

...What does Scott Harmon imply with his statement? Motive CEO Scott Harmon's statement, "We're not warm and fuzzy, there's not a lot of cheerleading, and we don't give backrubs on Fridays.", implies that the overall focus in the company is driving force of the product not so much the coddling of the employees, but impeccable production. Scott Harmon is a fan of the one and only Ayn Rand. (Source: http://www.forbes.com/forbes/2003/0217/054.html). The company's mission and name relate directly to Ayn Rand's 1957 novel, 'Atlas Shrugged'. The statement is apparently his credo. Moreover, Harmon is a wee bit headstrong, and driven by profits. His assertion in the company's competence is effervescent and I think many may be intimidated by his way of running things. Harmon creates a clear distinction between emotion and making business decisions. Explain what Marvin Bower meant by his statement. Bower believed "that consulting was not a business but a profession" and that the "basic philosophy was to make money the old fashion way—earning it ethically." I think that he meant that the best way to build a strong company was by values and to give back also. Just by looking at the company's website, they talk about the Soul of McKinsey and its derivative from Bower. This firm speaks on how it was founded on so many of Bower's good leadership (page 255: “the art of motivating employees to enhance their performance in order to achieve corporate goals ethically) ideas and that they give...

...development consulting firm specializing in the regional Native American casinos located in Oklahoma. Hines hopes to leverage his two decades worth of experience, his training pedigree and his education, into a thriving but boutique consulting firm that would assist these casinos in attracting and capturing casino players from the lucrative Dallas/Fort Worth gaming market. Many large casino companies already have offices in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metropolitan are to serve this ample and lucrative market however Hines fills that his expertise would be attractive to smaller casinos who do not have a presence in the market and would like to reduce both costs and the learning curve required in setting up an office and training employees. He has decided to create a small, service-centric boutique company which he will call his organization The Protervus Group. Market Structure In order to understand what casino player development entails, it is first necessary to understand the business side of casinos. Casinos are a form of business where it cannot be agreed upon as to whether they offer a good or a service. What can be agreed upon is that they offer casino games; slots and table games; blackjack, craps, roulette, baccarat and live poker at different price points, (denominations and minimums), for players to play. All casinos offer these games in one version or another. This makes the product or service offering homogenous in that regard. They all offer these games at a variety...

...into other markets at the same time. Secondly, and maybe most promising, they could explore different consumers segments, which would enable Nintendo to reach market opportunities that had been ignored by Sony and Microsoft so far. VERTICAL INTEGRATION After analyzing its core competences, the costs, benefits and risks involved, Nintendo developed a strategy based on internalizing as much as possible gaining substantial influence in the final products. This allows the company to outsource primarily activities in which either they possess a low level of core competencies and/or transaction costs show clear disadvantages in internalizing. Nintendo follows a fabless production model (derived from “fabrication-less”) which means that all production processes are outsourced to external suppliers and production factories and then sent and assemble in Nintendo-owned factories. By avoiding investing money on expand vertical, the company reduce their transaction cost by outsourcing the manufacturing and still manage to maintain lower retail prices than competitors. This result in a different vertical integration compare to the previously existing model allowing Nintendo to succeed without controlling their raw materials and manufacturing process. Nowadays the market is living a different vertical integration concept where the value is around, starting from the user experience and working backwards, instead of beginning with some piece of hardware and then designing software and a...
