Essay 1; Conversation When you think of the term conversation, the first thing that comes to mind is two or more people talking with one another. Author Kwame Anthony Appiah sees conversation as more than just face-to-face talking. In the articles Making Conversation and The Primacy of Practice, Appiah views conversation as any type communication even simply just seeing how other countries/cultures operate. Basic understanding of one another is Appiahs view of conversation. Kwame Anthony Appiah states his belief that the world is separated by unnecessary lines and communication is a way that we can break those lines and possibly achieve cosmopolitanism. Cosmopolitanism, as Appiah describes it, is the challenge of the world acting as one community and with the first step of conversation, we can all ‘live together as a global tribe.’ Conversation will help us challenge ourselves to see the importance in our own actions, along with developing the understanding to see what others do as important as well. Once we understand the good that can come out of conversation, as well as the limitations that it has, the future will be much more socially efficient and we will be able to have left conflict. We are all separated but at the same time we are all connected. In this century we have the ability to see what is going on across the globe. Already we are sharing in ways of communication over the internet and radio. Appiah states, “Only in the past couple of centuries, as every human community has gradually been drawn into a single web of trade and a global network of information, have we come to a point where each of us can realistically imagine contacting any other of our six billion conspecifics and sending that person something worth having: a radio, an antibiotic, a good idea.’ We have the ability to share so much with our ‘global tribe,’ as Appiah would say. Yet, with all of these ways to help, we still can harm one another, even from miles away just as easily as sending the good. Within simple conversation we can change the way that we live, ‘ Together, we can raise standards of living by adopting new policies on trade and aid, prevent or treat diseases with vaccines and pharmaceuticals, take measures against global climate change, encourage resistance to tyranny and a concern for the worth of each human life.’ Appiah believes that we can do all of that just by making conversation.
The first step is to understand other cultures the best we can. While we may not be able to completely have the same mind set as those other people, we could still understand, we could still make conversation. Once we develop an understanding with one another, we will be able to converse even better about more in depth stuff and, as Appiah suggests we could develop something great. For example, if you are working with a group on a project, you must get to know each other first. Even you all only know how each other thinks, that is a great start. Then, just because you understand each other you can develop better ideas. If you do not understand the way something works, then how do you expect to improve in it? Everyone across the globe may not agree on the same things, obviously we all have different beliefs, different religions and different values, but Appiah says that all we need to do is agree to behave morally among one another. We can do it among personal relationships with friends, or coworkers so as long as we all agree to behave morally, we can do it among larger scale relationships. You can be catholic and be friends with a Muslim, and the friendship would not be greatly affected. Eventually, we could possibly achieve this same respect for different countries over the world. We need to see the limitations that conversation has. Our differences are a big limitation, but once we take a step back and not only put aside obvious differences (such as the color of our skin or our religion), but embrace them, we can begin to coexist as one unit rather than a bunch of countries acting in our own interest. Once we begin to coexist, we can start helping each other more. We can help take care of one another in times of need, and lend a helping hand. Many nations over the years have begun to reach other to one another during tragic disasters, but it shouldn’t take a tragedy to bring people together. If we were already acting as one, we could lessen the opportunity that a tragedy occurs or prevent them all together. Appiah believes that we need to achieve a greater sense of respect for one another, and if we do that then why would we wish to have conflicts with each other? You would never wish to fight or have a conflict with someone you have respect and understanding for. Just developing simple respect is something we could achieve through conversation. While we embrace our differences, it make take a while to get around or over that limitation, there have been many past issues such as conflicts and arguments over our differences. Our differences in morals, for example may clash and cause conflict as it has in the past years. That is most likely our biggest limitation, but through Appiahs idea of conversation, we could fight through the differences and make something great. We may change our minds or have a change of heart. Through conversation we can communicate thorough these differences and understand why we are different. Many people have different views and different beliefs but by using conversation we can resolve many conflicts and break the barriers we have with other countries. We already have started to be more effective in communication across the world just by using the internet to see into other cultures and begin understanding. If we keep communicating and trying to understand one another, eventually we can achieve cosmopolitanism in the sense that we all agree to behave morally. Eventually leading to a sense of cosmopolitanism.

Conversation Analysis

...Cameron Lawson Case Study Analysis #1 COM 3152 Tues. Thur. 11AM Spring 2014 Phil and Trish’s communication issues were caused solely because of Phil. He didn’t see her as an equal, and thought he was better than her. In the conversation Phil had with his wife before the plane trip, he said that her age and gender bothered him. Trish was intimidated and recognized that Phil didn’t have respect for her, as mentioned in the conversation with her husband. Marshall’s communication failure with both of them came when he didn’t establish himself as the boss. It wasn’t said in the email that Marshall had a sit down with both Trish and Phil. With out them having sit down conversation to get to know and understand each other, they just saw him as a newcomer, instead of their boss. It was stated that Trish had no idea what Marshall thought of the inventory system and that Phil didn’t respect him because he thought Marshall took his position. All of them seemed to ignore communication as a process and purpose. Marshall’s leadership style didn’t really follow one specific idea. His style could fall on The Tannenbaum and Schmidt Leadership Continuum, and it would be on the Subordinate Centered Leadership end. He never declared himself a boss, and outside of the car ride and flight they never did things as a group. All of them talked to different people at the luncheon and kept distance from each other. Marshall passively suggested that they discuss things the next morning, instead...

Telephone Conversation

...Keeping Conversation Flowing Some conversations refuse to flow. Often, this is a result of a clash of the conversational styles of the two people involved. One may be all enthusiasm and sympathy; the other may be quiter and more private. As a result, the other backs off. Another problem is when someone is not interested enough in the other person. A. Improving Your Style Good conversation requires diplomacy and tact. It is give and take. Avoid the following conversation killers: 1. Talking too much. 2. Talking too little. 3. Interrupting. 4. Too much personal disclosure. 5. Going into too much detail. 6. Constantly bringing the conversation back to you. The conversation of most people is all "I", "myself" and "me". Don't fall into this trap. 7. Trying to be funny all the time. 8. Imitating the other person's accent. 9. Being too critical. Being Too Critical Some people are hopeless perfectionists. The standards they demand of life are impossibly high. As a result, most things fall short of their standard and friends stay away from them. Little can be gained from being critical unless: 1. You are criticizing something that can actually be changed. 2. You offer an alternative to the thing you are criticizing. 3. You are specific and clear about what you are criticizing and why. 4. You let others know that what you are saying is only your opinion. 5. You balance your criticism with...

Difficult Conversation

...Handling Difficult Conversations Shaquinna Wilson Walden Unversity Handling Difficult Conversations Introduction Sure at some point have to face the situation to keep a difficult conversation with a friend or family member about a sensitive issue. Sometimes, we face the difficult position of having to tell someone something important knowing that the conversation can be complicated. Everyone faces such situations that can help not only make the situation more bearable for both sides, but also to communicate better (Falcone, Claxton & Marshall, 2014). Discussion In terms of integrity, I have probably made many assumptions about my own standards as a coach, having held responsibilities for professional standards and corruption prevention in different roles / prisons. I have had to handle some situations quite carefully where more senior people have (in my opinion) held less robust principles of integrity than I do. For example I have always struggled with bias on promotion and selection boards and have had to have some difficult conversations where I have not been prepared to compromise my integrity whilst ensuring I don’t commit ‘career suicide’. Even where I agree that a candidate is a good person and can understand the principles of knowing someone’s abilities by observation as opposed to trying to establish them on a 40 minute interview, I cannot help but think that places the onus on being a good selector via interview as opposed to hedging bets on...

Strategic Conversations

...Running head: Strategic Conversations Strategic Conversations Shardae Mohammad Grantham University Strategic Conversations Communication is important within any relationship, therefore it is very important to have communication within an organization. When we discuss strategic conversations for an organization we will discuss having an open communication climate, asking questions, active listening, dialogue, candor and using stories for communication. Strategic Conversations is an interpersonal communication skill process designed to produce valuable, clear and meaningful conversations in your professional and personal interactions. (New York Center, 2005) An open communication climate gives everyone an opportunity to express themselves freely. When I hear open communication I feel like I can speak on anything and that would make me feel comfortable enough to speak on my ideas, or a problem that I may be having within the organization. Asking questions is a part of Strategic conversations and this entitles employees to ask questions to get a better understanding of the organizations goals and or vision. Asking questions also goes hand and hand with open communication climate where you should feel free to ask. If you’re going to have open communication, and give the opportunity to ask questions, you must be an active listener for the conversation to be effective. If you’re listening you can learn about changes needed within the organization and relationships. The...

Difficult Conversations

...journal discusses what I learned from reading the book Difficult Conversations: How to Discuss What Matters Most. It goes in depth into what I liked and what I didn’t like about the book. I also discuss how the book relates to my life and how I will use what I learned and apply it to my conversations and to my life in general. The book, Difficult Conversations: How to Discuss What Matters Most, really spoke to me in more ways than one. Throughout the entire book I could relate most, if not all, of what was written to my everyday life. Most of all I have come to realize how I’ve played a crucial role in many conflicts in my past even when I believed I did nothing wrong. I think my biggest takeaway from this book is that everyone plays a part in conflict, that blame does nothing but make things worst and that feelings (when controlled) are a lot more important than I thought. I’ve also learned that I need to let go of a lot of things and start moving on with life. The blame frame: “produces disagreements, denial, and little learning. Evokes fear of punishment. We end up defending ourselves.” I find myself playing the blame game way too often. I was happy to read that everyone contributes when there is conflict. Everyone has a role even if they think they don’t. Thinking back to past conflicts i’ve realized that I find it difficult to move from blaming to a learning conversation. I’ve managed to convince myself that conflict is about right...

Difference Between Class Conversations and Conversations with Friends

...difference between college class conversation and casual conversation with a friend is that during a casual conversation with a friend an individual do not have to think before he or she speaks. Even though this may be the best decision to avoid confrontation, most friends speak their mind to one another with no hesitation or filter. Whether their opinion is negative or positive, they can speak to each other as they please. With that being said, a conversation within a classroom has to be well thought out with caution. Self-Cut Off's in Conversation

...instances of these ‘cut-offs’ are evident in the language, and also appear to share common contextual and sequential properties. When we claim that something is an instance of repair we mean that speakers are adhering to ‘problems in speaking, hearing and understanding’ within the conversation (Schegloff, Jefferson & Sacks: 1977: 362). Importantly, however, it must be acknowledged that repair can appear without an overtly observable ‘error’. (Schegloff, Jefferson & Sacks: 1977: 362). Laasko and Sorjonen claim that ‘cutting off’ is a form of self-repair that features within an ongoing turn-constructional unit and as a result ‘the utterance is heard as prosodically discontinuous and incomplete’(2010). In most cases speakers cut off a word in progress, although alternatively the speaker may cut off after the completion of a word. One of the ways we find non-repair cut offs are those that acknowledge ‘topic-external factors’. These include disjunctional observations or subjects that are disconnected from the topic and most often linked to contextual issues or topic external thoughts. For example, they feature ‘now’ issues; where the focus is shifted to the context of the conversation itself like whether the hearer is free to talk, analysis of one’s own speech or the bringing up of a topic or subject that is detached from the current direction of speech. As we will observe, all of these ‘disjunctions’ eventually return to the original interrupted...

...The conversation that I stumbled upon was with several people talking about how much each individual works and when they are on the road, how much they have to eat out and how much money is spent on this every day. I am going to give person number one a name of Brent, person number two a name of Chance, and person number three a name of Sid. Keeping this in mind; Brent told Sid that he was tired of eating out so much. He stated that he would rather go to a convenient store and grab some stuff to make. Chance came in to the conversation and agreed with Brent. Chance, then added to the conversation saying that there is so much money spent on eating out every day, instead of going out and grabbing a bite to eat, they would rather starve and save the money for when they do get to go home. More often than once; I hear this a lot of the time. What I would suggest to them would be to buy a small crock pot and small electric pan to cook meals, instead of having to eat out. This will not only save them money, but, it will allow them to eat healthier. I for one, would do just this in order to save all the money I could. Having to listen to conversations is something that would be to a surveyors advantage because the surveyor will be able to get valid information and may be able to put this information into a...

Turn Taking in Conversations: Overlaps and Interruptions

...Turn-taking in Conversations: Overlaps and Interruptions - Recorded Conversation Analysis - Introduction Turn-taking behavior and interaction patterns play a key role in the process through which the participants interpret each-other's meanings and interactions. The study of "rules" of conversational behavior, turn-taking, overlapping of turns, pausing between the turns, etc. was pioneered by Sacks, Schegloff and Jefferson (1974). Interruption, according to West and Zimmerman, disrupts a current speaker - although disruption as such can also be regarded as interaction. Drummond claims that the disruptive potential of a turn can and should be evaluated based on the way the overlap was resolved in the interaction. Lerner (1989) observes that there are interruptions which can be justified in the ongoing interaction based on the sequential context of turns that lead to interruptive turns. He calls these justified interruptions. There are also "delayed completions", which represent a device for resolving overlap; a locator producing them might have been 'interrupted' by a current speaker before reaching the end of a (prior) turn - this gives the locutor the status of an interuptee, and thus the interuptee gains the "right" to complete his or her previous turn by interrupting the current speaker. In defining overlaps, the following qualify as important concepts: 1. Transition Relevant Places (TRPs) - they are a natural place for the occurrence of short overlaps or simultaneous...

The Conversation Of Romeo And Juliet By William Shakespeare

...We've all been there: waiting in line in the cafeteria and staring at the two best friends hunch next to each other talking in hushed voices. We instantly know that they are gossiping about someone. The unnerving part isn't that they are gossiping, but rather the question of who they are gossiping about. Are we at the center of this malicious conversation? Most people have experienced this, and even been the one to initiate such a conversation. And although the lesson that gossip is bad has been ingrained in us since before we can talk and vocalize such words, we still find ourselves being lured into drama time and time again because the of the infatuation for drama that we, as human beings, inevitably have. Shakespeare tapped into this desire...
