A lot has happened from the 1940s to present day. There has been a Second World War, countless violations of civil rights, and discrimination between the sexes and between races. There have been few events, though, that continued to show America’s core values. Events, such as the writing of the Containment Policy, the establishment of the Peace Corps, and the United States’s inclusion in the Korean War demonstrate liberty. Other events, like the Brown v. Board of Education court case, the passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the passing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 demonstrates America’s core value of equality. And still more events, like World War II, the Miranda v. Arizona court case, and the Montgomery Bus Boycott demonstrates …show more content…
America promotes the core democratic value of liberty through the writing of the Containment Policy, the establishment of the Peace Corps, and their involvement in the Korean War. The drafting of the Containment Policy demonstrates America’s core value of liberty. The Containment Policy was “a multifaceted program that entailed the use of economic, diplomatic, and military instruments of American foreign policy to hold Soviet expansionism in check,” (Kan). This means that the Containment Policy stated that America could send economic, diplomatic, and military aid to countries struggling with Communism to keep the “Red Menace” at bay. By writing the Containment policy, America attempted to free many nations from the social oppression of Communism, which demonstrates its core value of liberty. The establishment of the Peace Corps also demonstrated the core value of liberty. The Peace Corps was established by the Kennedy administration in order to send American volunteers to foreign countries to build good foreign relations and promote world peace by bringing desperately needed social and technical services to developing countries. The Peace Corps provided technical aid to many foreign countries by bringing new and more advanced medical technologies to third-world countries. World War II was an enormous conflict surrounding Hitler’s attempted extermination of an entire population; the Jews. Many other world powers got involved to either support or oppose Hitler’s cause; including the United States. The United States joined the Allied Powers which was a group of countries who banded together in order to fight against Hitler and bring justice to the Jewish people who were persecuted during the second World War. Many consider World War II the “"Good War" that defeated the Axis, saved democracy, and brought unity, prosperity, and social advance in the United States,” (Jeffries). Because the United States took up arms against Germany and sought to bring justice to the Jews, they promoted their core value of justice. America also promoted justice through the decision it reached during the Miranda v. Arizona court case. The case revolved around Ernesto Miranda who allegedly confessed to numerous crimes during police questioning without having been informed of his rights prior to his questioning. Because of this, he could not take advantage of his rights as an accused person. Miranda thought that this was unjust and took his case to court.
