...Identifying Fallacies CRT 205 Identifying Fallacies 2. This is an example of an ad hominem fallacy, the author attacks Andrea Keene, and therefore the claim is false. This could also be an example of Straw Man fallacy, while the effects of fertility drugs are not exaggerated, suggesting that one or more of the infants dies “agonizingly” every time is exaggerated. 3. Straw Man fallacy, this is where the author distorts and exaggerates the position. When she said that it is far better to be a widow than a divorcee because all divorcees are “rejects” who have been “publicly dumped” and are avoided “like they have leprosy” she is distorting the truth and exaggerating. 5. This is also a Straw Man fallacy, the author is exaggerating by saying “Then anytime anyone wanted a picnic, he would have to park at the edge of the park and carry everything in—ice chests, chairs, maybe even grandma.” This is also an example of a false dilemma, the author is limiting the outcome to two alternatives when other alternatives may be available. 6. The author stated that “The protestors would of course deny…” This is an example of circumstantial ad hominem fallacy because the author suggests that the Christian groups “would of course” deny any anti-Semitic motivation because they are Christians. The author continues and suggests that there would be no debate if there were a modern Christian scene depicted. 8. The fallacy is “For without these sources those demands will not be met, and it...

If you choose school violence as one of your topics, for example, you might find a magazine article that argues that violence in the media causes school violence and a Web site that persuasively argues that violence in the media is not responsible for school violence. Conduct a similar search for your second topic. When finished, you should have two sources per topic. Note: You may use sources from any combination of the Viewpoints, Magazines, Academic Journals, News (use sources marked Editorial and Column), and Web sites database sections. ...Eric Purdie University of Phoenix CRT/205 CRITICAL THINKING August 5, 2012 1. What is the issue? Gay marriage should not be legal. 2. What are the stated and unstated premises? Legalizing same sex would harm the economy, and nothing good could come for it. 3. What was the conclusion? Some children would grow up fatherless and the birth rate would fall. I choose this topic because am not fully against same sex marriage. I believe anyone that wants to spend the rest of their life with someone; it is not society place to say it must be someone from the opposite sex. Gay people have been thought a struggle to receive the same right as all America’s. Discrimination in the workplace, being stereotype in public or in their community. I do not believe people are just become Gay. They were always Gay that why they say “I’m coming out”. However if a person is Gay and want to get married it is there life. But they should not except to get married in a church, where marriage is between men a woman. That is forcing there believe on anyone else. Most religion groups believe is you are Gay, and then you have an evil spirit and you will go to hell unless you repent. I do not share the share point of view; however I do believe that as long as you repent for any sins God will forgive you no matter what. Churches and religion figures through the beginning of time have change things to fix their them and not for the greater good. Gay people are some of the most nice, clean...

...The claim made in this video is about Turkish police officers brutally attacking a female prisoner who had been detained in a nightclub because she did not have an ID. The claims made in this video are quiet obvious by looking at the video. The video clearly shows a female prisoner being attack in a small space by three men, one of which had a police uniform on, the uniform police officer did not have much participation but clearly did nothing to stop the beating in fact you can clearly see him in the video closing the blinds and turning up the AC. Reporter Ivan Watson states this is common in Turkish, according to the 2009 government study 42% of Turkish women reported sexual abuse and/or physical abuse from their partner or husband. He reports that the 37 year old women was charged with resisting arrest and reckless behavior, she may be looking at a sentences of up to 6 years. He also reports the police officers who participated were suspended and charged with excessive use of force, if convicted they can be looking at a sentences of up to 1 ½ years in jail. The author (Ivan Watson) is a CNN reporter and journalist. I believe the author was unbiased and trustworthy, he reported only facts, did not give his opinion in the matter, and had no prejudice against the implicated. ...The examples I chose are: Example 2 I was thrown from my truck as it left the road. I was later found in a ditch by a flock of wild turkeys. Example 3 Next Sunday a collection will be taken to help with the cost of the new altar. Anyone wanting to help to do something on the new altar can step forward and let the committee know. In example two, as far as being vague, it is not clear as to what the writer meant by being thrown off his truck. By being thrown off it could possibly mean that he was ejected from the bed of the truck. It could also mean that he was thrown out of truck by someone. Or that he hit something in the road that caused him to be ejected from the truck. In the second sentence he says that he was later found by a flock of wild turkeys. Is the author saying that the flock of wild turkeys found him lying in a ditch? Or that someone had found him in the ditch next to the flock? In the third example, it is vague because we are not sure what is being collected? Is it a donation of material or money? And in the second sentence it is asking if anyone wants to help do something on the altar to let the committee know. It is not clear as to what they are asking to be done on the new altar. These sentences are ambiguous because while you are reading each example, you there are multiple ways someone might interpret their meaning. Both vagueness and ambiguity influence understanding the statements because what the writer is trying to say may not be what the audience...

...Influence of Moral Reasoning Focusing on the actions, not the abuse, select one person involved in this case(Assistant Coach/Athletic Director/State Attorney General/School President, etc.) and discuss the following: * What were the actions taken by the person you chose? * What was the impact of those actions? * If you had held the same position, what action would you have taken? * How did your moral reasoning impact your decision? Focusing on the actions by the college athletes involved in this article, they apparently needed to have sufficient grades to be eligible to play in “bowl games” for their sports. Some of those who were lacking academically, but still wished to compete in the bowls, looked for an “easy out.” They found this easy out in the form of schools offering online classes which only lasted 10 days. These courses didn’t provide much substance or learning for the students, however they did get the student athletes an “easy A” so that they would be academically qualified for bowl games. The student athletes who chose this route may have managed to academically qualify themselves for bowl games, but it could be argued that they did not gain anything from doing so. The courses described in the article would likely be easily passed by a grade school or middle school student. The courses lasted only 10 days, so even if there was some sort of substance to be taken away from the class, these student athletes wouldn’t have had very much time to absorb...

The first video was “Taking Skin Care Personally” and the second was “Preparing Nurses for the Future.” Johnson and Johnson own the copy write and sponsored both videos. The video “Taking Skin Care Personally” featured actress Cherie Price explaining how the “Skin Id” system help resolve her acne problem. The skin care video is toward Johnson and Johnson Neutrogena products because it did not reference any other company’s products. Even the title “Taking Skin Care Personally” implies Johnson and Johnson takes skin care personally. The second video “Preparing Nurses for the Future” is promoting a program called “Your Future in Nursing” that prepares new nurses for the workplace reducing the high attrition rates that result from the pressures and responsibilities of being a nurse fresh out of school. The issues associated with starting a new job affects society because there difficulties making this transition for all professions. Therefore, this video relates to society as the whole. Johnson and Johnson is a very large well respected company. Although the videos were supporting Johnson and Johnson products which could be interpreted as bias, the information is credible base to the companies experience and reputation. The videos did not make a direct claim but states or implies the...

...JEROME LICKISS CRT/205 WEEK 1 ASSIGNMENT INDIVIDUAL: WHAT IS CRITICAL THINKING MRS. BARBARA STEARS Critical thinking is as the old saying goes “thinking about thinking”, we use critical thinking almost in everything we do day to day, such as figuring out what we want to wear for that day. When we use critical thinking we are deciding whether or not criteria are of good sense of logical. If we were given a project such as designing something or evaluate something or do anything that involves coming up with a conclusion, you would have to stop and really think more critically of what it is you are going to design, how you’re going to deign it and whether or not the design will meet all the requirements that is expected. A lot of things need to happen when you’re using critical thinking especially if you were required to give a design especially at work. Examples of the steps you would take when using critical thinking would be taking notes, considering other designs and not just the one that just pops up in your head and as well as making sure that all the specs meet company requirements. Your basic goal when it comes to critical thinking is to be able to come up with a decision that is not only correct but wise. It is real easy for us to be able to just make a quick decision when it comes to any decision we face in life, which can have severe consequences if the wrong decision is made, but if we can take the time to evaluate our objective using standards or...

...What Is Critical Thinking CRT/205 Kayla Wallace UOP/Axia What is critical thinking? Critical thinking is when you’re basically thinking about thinking. For instance we think all the time, from what we will wear for the day or what we are going to eat. Maybe it’s sometimes to make a judgment, or whether or not we like something. When you think critically; you are thinking about whether or not the criteria is of good sense and logical. For example; you’re asked to maybe design or evaluate something, to make a proposal or diagnose a situation, to explain or comment on something, or to do any number of things that involve coming to conclusions. (In text quote: Retrieved from Text Book, Chapter One: What is Critical Thinking? (Page 2)) This would be an instance where you would stop and think more critically rather than just making quick decisions and not giving it your best. When working on something along the lines of this example you want to be able to give explanations, so you would want to take notes and think about all the options you could use to help get to a conclusion when trying to solve a situation, as well as when making a proposal. “The ultimate objective in thinking critically is to come to conclusions that are correct and to make decisions that are wise. Because our decisions reflect our conclusions, we can simplify things by saying that the purpose of thinking critically is to come to correct conclusions; the...
