...Discuss the advantages for replacing the current system for electing MPs with another one. There are two main types of electoral systems in the UK. They are First Past the Post (FPTP) and Proportional Representation (PR) First Past the Post is the voting system used to elect MPs to 'seats' in Parliament. In this system 'winner takes all' and the system also usually gives a clear majority both in a constituency or at national level. This means that a candidate in a constituency only needs one more vote than the nearest rival to win the seat. This is similar to political parties in general elections as they only need to win one more seat in the House of Commons to have a majority. The advantages of using FTPT is there is very little chance of extremist parties being elected to Parliament under because they are unlikely to gain enough votes to come into power in any one constituency. Also, generally the results of elections using FPTP can be calculated quickly. So, this makes it easier to transfer power to another party if it becomes necessary. One of the main criticisms of FPTP is that the number of votes for a party in general elections is not accurately shown in the number of seats won. An example of this could be the 1997 election when the Conservatives gained 18% of the vote in Scotland but not one but didn’t win a seat. This is can be seen at constituency level, where the winning candidate may have only received one third of the votes cast. So, a government could be elected...

...Common Sense Approach to Reforming the Federal Tax System On February 3, 2013 marked the 100th birthday of the 16th Amendment. The 16th Amendment paved the way for the creation of the federal income tax that continues to this day to have far reaching repercussions on the American tax payer. Before the ratification of the 16th Amendment, the birth of the federal income tax dates back to the Civil War. In order to finance the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln signed into law Revenue Act of 1861 on August 5, 1861. The Revenue Act consisted of a flat tax rate of 3% on income above $800 and 5% on individuals living outside of the United States. On July 1, 1861 United States Congress repealed the Revenue Act of 1861 and replaced it with the Revenue Act of 1862. The Revenue Act of 1862 introduced a progressive tax and established the Bureau of Internal Revenue. In 1872 Congress repealed the Revenue Act of 1862. One again elected officials tried to revive the federal income tax in 1894. However, in 1895 the federal income tax was declared unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court because the tax was not apportioned according to the population of each state. In an address to Congress on June 16, 1909 President Howard Taft proposed that Congress consider a new amendment to the Constitution. “I recommend, then, first, the adoption of a joint resolution by two-thirds of both Houses, proposing to the States an amendment to the Constitution granting to the Federal Government...

...for 30 days or the consumer is able to receive several different packages as compensation. Recently the organization has changed its ticketing process when referring jobs to the Maintenance / Engineering Department and has asked my local leadership team to review and revamp the new process. This proposal provides a brief overview of the current process including its intricacies and outlines how we will perform our research and testing in preparation for our full report. Problem The newly revised Maintenance / Engineering ticketing system (also known as the - refer to maintenance) was intended to streamline the process and reduce downtime. Unfortunately, this revised ticketing process resides within its own system (TTS and Watchtower) and does not communicate with the current billing system (CSG), work order system or the call center. This has caused unnecessary additional down time for customers if their issues were not resolved the 1st time, financial loss from the company’s perspective and an inconvenienced customer. We need to identify a methodology that will allow the new ticketing system to communicate to the traditional billing system and all cross-functional areas. Justification/Feasibility With the new addition of Watchtower and TTS maintaining and issuing maintenance ticket numbers, the communication between CSG and the completion codes of the original job have been eliminated. Currently, when a customer calls into the call center for service interruptions, the CAE...

... we review Sabor’s current position with regards to its supply source of Macronil, the main component for its air filtration units. We evaluate this using the Karljic matrix and his 4-phase methodology (Kraljic, 1983) as our theoretical framework and analyze the options available to Sabor Inc. using the case information and data provided. We then conclude with our goal of offering viable recommendations to Sabor, given the constraints, to better Sabor’s purchasing position in this situation. Current State Sabor has been informed by all 3 of its suppliers of a potential supply shortages in the market for Macronil, a critical component for Sabor’s air filtration units. Sabor’s products are air heating and cooling systems, however, there is a growing demand for Macronil filters, not only with new installations of these systems, but as retrofits as well. Macronil filters are not only more technologically advanced than its next best substitute, which is the electronic air cleaner, but is also cheaper to install and require less frequent maintenance. Currently, Sabor’s requirements are met with quarterly, semi-annual or annual contracts. However, Sabor’s suppliers have forewarned that they will no longer guarantee supplies based on the current supply practice, in the event of a market-wide shortage of the product. Sabor’s suppliers have all proposed long term contracts as a solution but Ray Soles, Sabor’s VP for Supply Chain, is not keen to deviate from current practices. Ray has...

The proven manager that would take on the responsibility of initiating a change to better this department would have to go into greater depth in searching the bigger issues the company is having. ...Summary The new business venture to produce quality boxes for the U.S market has created a requirement for Platinum Box to source five new presses. The three bids to supply these presses were from Merakuri, Jabaking and Pnutype. Each bid had its attributes over the other. Finding a way to fairly evaluate each bid was needed. A Weighted Evaluation System was chosen. Four factors were used to evaluate the bids. They are: Performance & Quality, Service, Price (total cost of purchase determines the pricing factor) and Financing. By applying a value to each, a better evaluation of the bids can be made. Performance & Quality was perceived to be of utmost importance to the point where the success of the project depended on it. This was given a high value of 40 with the other three taking 20 each for a total of 100. The Merakuri bid scored the highest with 85 followed by Pnutype with 70 and Jabaking with 60. Jabaking is the current supplier of our presses which came about as a result of a favour from the owners. Platinum Box has always felt indebted to Jabaking and may feel some loyalty as a result but the inability of their current presses to meet the quality specification put forward has dismissed them as supplier at this time. Also the union presence is strong at Jabaking which could result in a union push towards Platinum Box if they were chosen as the supplier. The new technology used by Pnutype has a high risk attached. It has a very short track record and the technology...

...reasons why current supervision is different from previous supervision comprises the inclusion of more supervision conditions that are effective in detecting any form of violation. For instance, offenders are subjected to alcohol testing. Further, to avoid risk factors associated with offenders under supervision, offenders are grouped into aggregate groups as opposed to previous individual supervision. In addition, a large number of current parole officers are trained to enforce the law and thus they lack in psychology and sociology training which was common in the previous approach. Previous supervision allowed minimum violation in the quest of dealing with other rehabilitation issues while the current supervision does not allow for any form of violation (Seiter, 2010). The current community supervision style has downsides because it has proved to be expensive due to the increasing number of revocations in the pursuit to ensure that the system upholds the provisions of surveillance. Further, offenders whose community supervision is revoked find it hard to reintegrate back to the community because prison life does not ensure efficient rehabilitation and counseling thus, not efficient (Seiter, 2010). Seiter (2010) proposes that the current approach to community supervision will have to change because despite the conditions provided for surveillance supervision, determined offenders are more likely to commit a crime. Further, Seiter (2010) argues that the current system has proved...
