Other scholars such as Adam Smith and Marx in identifying civil society primarily as economic interaction through the market and hence civil society acting as the agent for promoting economic development in country by stimulating good governance like transparency, effectiveness, openness, responsiveness and accountability. ABSTRACT This master thesis studies the impact of providing business training to microfinance clients in Tanzania. Based on data collected six months after the programme ended, we cannot confirm positive treatment effects from business training on the micro entrepreneurs’ profits. However, treated entrepreneurs have higher likelihood of operating multiple businesses; increased their engagement within commerce and reduced their engagement within manufacturing. Based on the market situation at the time, these changes all represent advancement towards business structures associated with higher profitability. They were there to assess the progress of the first slowsand water filter of their company— Urban Water Partners (UWP). Four months earlier, Jones and Matto, along with Ajay Kori (MBA ’11), partnered with Justin Iwasaki and Jason Young, two MD candidates at the University of Utah, to win HBS’s 2010 Social Venture Track Business Plan Contest. Their idea was to bring clean water to several African nations using a network of existing water vendors, readily available water purification technology, and mobile-banking technology. If they were successful in Dar es Salaam, the team planned to expand operations into several other African urban centers where water quality was poor. ...The Implementation of Goods and Services Tax : Destructive Effects Outweigh Benefits The issue of whether the government should implement Goods and Services Tax (GST) has been a hot debate in Hong Kong. The government stress that the tax will help broaden the tax base and secure the sustainability of tax revenue (Mak, 2006). They have also cited some examples from countries all over the world which have already imposed GST such as most of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries and Pacific Asian countries (Yu, 2002). In spite of these, after considering the social context and environmental factors, the tax should not be imposed in Hong Kong since it will cause social discontent, hurt the economy and have low cost-effectiveness. First, social discontent will arise as a result of the implementation of GST. The GST is renowned for its regressivity, which is attributed to a widening effect on income disparity (Kato, 2003). Income disparity, which can be measured by Gini Coefficient, is an important social issue in modern cities (Callig, 2007). High degree of income gap is a serious socioeconomic problem, which will eventually lead to social discontent as the underprivileged cannot get their deserved treatment in society and may become highly unsatisfied. ...Introduction Following the end of the Marcos dictatorship in 1986, a new hope had dawned in the eyes of the Filipino people. A new president was put into power, along with a list of demands and requests by citizens, ultimately seeking a new direction leading to a better life. One of the issues needed to be tackled was the longstanding problems in the agriculture sector. Considered an integral part in the country’s economy, the agriculture sector accounts a significant portion of the total employment, which ranged from 45-50% during the 1980s. On the other hand, this sector also attributed significant portions of the total poor in the country for decades. Thus, in June 1988, the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP) was signed into law, paving the way for extensive land distribution and reforms which communist insurgencies urged during the Marcos regime. Consequently, the initial stages of the implementation process of CARP was met with apparent complications, expectedly so given that such a policy entailed a wide scope, whilst rural landlords provided staunch opposition in seizing their ownership to government. However, as the years passed and administrations would change, the promises of sweeping agrarian reform have remained unfinished, otherwise, significantly watered down.
