...Shixun Huang Professor Michelle Parague Speech 111-D2 October 14, 2012 CFB Does anyone of you know when the earliest women’s high heels form appears? You probably think of 18s or 19s. NO. It’s 1100 years ago from China which was Song dynasty. Don’t think that was too old because it’s the basic form of women’s high heels, and it became so popular once ever. Think about what high heels do for women, all it does is to make you look pretty. But today I am not going to talk about the women’s high heels; I am going to talk about the Chinese foot-binding, what cause it and what it affects. They have similar function but it’s different. High heels are the shoes of the foot, but the foot-binding is changing your foot’s shape as a high heel. You see the difference, one is shoes and one is foot. Chinese foot- binding started during song dynasty, it is a Chinese custom of wrapping women's feet with 10 feet long bandages in order to stop them from growing with age, (picture, some women went even further, turn their feet into only 3 inches long which we call it “three-inch golden lotuses.”) and give them pretty look back then. But it has caused severe life- long disability for many millions of elder women, and even in recent years. Why Chinese women want their feet to be bounded? First of all, obviously any husband doesn’t want his wife run away, if a husband hitting his wife that she couldn’t ran away because it’s very difficult to run with bounded feet. Second, having a wife like...

...Clubfoot also known as talipes equinovarus, is a congenital deformity of the foot. It occurs when the foot is twisted out of the normal position at a sharp angle similar to the head of a golf club. The heel appears inward increasing the arch and the top of the foot twists downward and inward. It can involve one or both feet, and abnormalities can range from mild to severe. The cause of clubfoot is unknown but studies have shown that smoking while pregnant, having a family history of clubfoot, environmental factors, genetics, and the position of the baby in the womb, all play roles with the cause of clubfoot. Clubfoot does not cause any pain for a baby, however there is a level of discomfort when this disability is noticeable. Unfortunately,...

...I've read that heel spurs are often painless, but can still cause heel pain, which is what I am experiencing. If the notes show I have no pain, then what would be the point in all my visits to the doctor/foot doctor at all. The pain I feel is not sometimes, its a constant pain I feel throughout the day, morning to night. When I walk I can't walk more than 20 minutes cause my left foot/leg becomes unbearable to walk on, which causes me to limp sending pain to my knee, hip and lower back. At night I wear a prescribed split for my heel spur, I roll my feet on a frozen water bottle or ball, and I do stretches every day in hopes that it will somehow help ease the pain. What I wouldn't give to have the same function on my left foot as I do on my right one. This has been a long journey for me, ever since i've had the heel spur its just become a more painful nightmare that I wish would just go...

...CUSTOMER SEGEMENTS/TARGET AUDIENCE Since entering the market in 2005, Dr.Scholls® insoles For HerTM was created to ease the discomfort many women experience from their shoes, specifically high heels. The product was originally intended to focus on older women who suffered from foot problems. Only recently has the For HerTM line been shifted to attract the younger demographics (ages 18-50). The types of women who will purchase products from the Dr. Scholl’s® For HerTM line tend to be women who are into the latest shoe fashions and are attracted to a variety of styles. The past 5 years, the women’s shoe industry has seen an increase in sky-high heels. Designers are adding more inches to many of their high heels. Sky-high heels are generally tended to attract women of a younger demographic (ages 18-35). Although these sky-highs are the latest trend, many of these shoes lack comfort. Not to mention the medical implications that can surface from wearing them for long periods of time. Many women, especially younger women, who enjoy purchasing fashionable shoes, will sacrifice comfort just for style. Increasing the awareness of this product will give women the opportunity to wear their shoes longer without discomfort. While it is said that higher price does not always guarantee quality, when it comes to women’s shoes many times the more expensive shoe brands are in fact more comfortable that those shoes on the cheaper end. Young women between the ages of 18 to 35 find themselves either...

...Back in India I attended a small high school, the only part of athletic training that I saw in the school was when I was a junior. The athletic trainer used to come to the school once a week to check on the injuries and health of the players of soccer team. Well playing soccer was quite a deal in India. I have extraordinary love for this game. When I was a senior in high school I was the captain of the soccer team. I never clearly understood the purpose of athletic training until the day came when I myself experienced the athletic trainers skills. During a soccer game, as I was trying to tackle the opponent player with the ball I got thrown back and hit my head on the ground, the feeling was weird there was sudden pain on the head and for moment I felt I had no head, then I saw the athletic trainer rushing towards me, just like a paramedic rushing to an accident scene. In no time he was there with me, he gently lifted my head and assessed my injury, I was stupefied by his methods and different tests that he used to determine the severity of my concussion. Since that incident I talked to my athletic trainer more often, to find out more about the life of an athletic trainer I asked him questions, which sparked my interest even more. It felt like this is exactly what I have been looking for. I get to help people prevent injuries or help after one occurs, it is a medicine based profession where I get the opportunity to learn and understand human body better. The another significant...

...or the final detail to be added to an outfit, the high-heel is a wardrobe staple that has come a long way! The high-heel has transformed from a measure of class and wealth, to a serious fashion statement. ANCIENT TIMES: Egyptian murals tell us that butchers were the originators of high heels, using them to walk through scores of dead animals without getting insides on their outsides. Most of the lower class in ancient Egypt walked barefoot, but from figures on murals dating from 3500 B.C. illustrations of both upper-class males and females are seen wearing heels, probably for ceremonial purposes. Greece and Rome, platform sandals called kothorni, later known as buskinsin during the Renaissance, were shoes with high wood or cork soles that were popular particularly among actors who would wear shoes of different heights to indicated varying social status or importance of characters. In ancient Rome, sex trade was not illegal and female prostitutes were identified by their high heels (Wilson 2005). HIGH-HEELS IN FASHION: High heels as we know them today were actually brought into the mainstream in the 16th century, when Catherine de Medici, merely five feet, was to marry her much taller husband Henry II. The bride-to-be worked with a local cobbler to fashion the shoes to give her a 2” boost. Catherine’s heels were a wild success and soon high heels were associated with privilege. By 1580, fashionable heels were popular for both sexes, and a person who had authority...

...test that measures changes in air volume on a cuff placed on the calf, while they performed orthostatic flexion and extension foot movements and altered standing up and lying down. The test was repeated in four situations: barefoot (0 cm), medium heels (3.5 cm), stiletto high heels (7 cm), and platform high heels (7 cm). The APG values of venous filling index (VFI), ejection fraction (EF), and residual volume fraction (RVF) were divided into four groups according to heel height and compared by repeated-measures analysis of variance. Results RVF was increased in the groups wearing high heels (stiletto and platform) compared with the barefoot group (P < .05). RVF was increased in the medium-heel group (3.5 cm) compared with the barefoot group (P < .05), and despite the lack of statistical significance, the medium-heel group showed lower values of RVF compared with the two high-heel groups. The EF parameter followed the opposite tendency, showing higher values for the barefoot group compared with the other three groups (P < .05). Values for VFI were similar in the three situations evaluated. Conclusions High heels reduce muscle pump function, as demonstrated by reduced EF and increased RVF values. The continuous use of high heels tends to provoke venous hypertension in the lower limbs and may represent a causal factor of venous disease...

...WOMEN’S HIGH HEEL DISCOMFORT ANALYSIS AND PROTOTYPE SOLUTION A Senior Project submitted In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Science in General Engineering And Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo by Kevin Blakley and Annamarie Kepple February 2013 Graded by: ______________ Date of Submission__________________________ Checked by: _____________ Approved by: _____________________________ Page 1 of 76 ABSTRACT WOMEN’S HIGH HEEL DISCOMFORT ANALYSIS AND SOLUTION Kevin Blakley and Annamarie Kepple Women love high heeled shoes, but this love comes at the cost of comfort. Wearing high heels causes a lot of pain and, in the long term, health complications. This project tries to overcome the problem by ultimately making high heels more comfortable. In order to do this, one must first understand the reasons that high heels are uncomfortable, such as arch angle, heel height, and the changes in walking motion. Once there is a true understanding of the factors that contribute to high heel discomfort, the design stage can begin. The design selected for this project was a wedge heel that contained compressive material. This design would improve user comfort in four different criteria. These criteria were arch angle, compression of the shoe, foot rotation, and ground contact surface area of the heel. After the working prototype was created, it was performance...

...Exemplification Essay How many times have you heard the saying “It’s not the clothes that makes the person, it’s the person that makes the person?” I know it’s a mouth full. And we’d all like to believe that, right? But unfortunately in today’s society that’s not the case. How you dress is a representation of you. Like a first impression and we all know you only get one. But exactly why does it matter? Why would anyone care about how I dress? Well that’s what where here to find out. In today’s world how you dress is a reflection of you. It defines how people will react or treat you. Possibly even stereotype & judge you. Luckily it all depends on the type of social situation you are in. If you dress appropriately for the right occasion you’ll have nothing to worry about. Let’s use me for an example. I went job hunting for the first time when I was 16. I didn’t know any better. I went to different stores in the mall wearing a pair of ripped up jeans with my American Eagle striped polo shirt and my most favorite pair of black and white low top Chuck Taylors. I felt like I could conquer the world, or at least the mall. I went to the mall around 2pm and left around 5pm with no job applications. I didn’t understand it, every store I went into had a “Now Hiring” sign, but I kept getting turned down. Soon my “conquer the world” attitude disappeared as I took the bus back home. When I got home my grandma asked me how the job search went. When I told her what happened she sat me...

...n January 16 of this year, the North Carolina Tar Heels were 12-5, having just beaten Virginia Tech in a close game in Chapel Hill. The grumbling old men of Franklin Street were grumbling about what they had been grumbling about for the past two years: Larry Drew II, the team's starting point guard, was playing horribly. In the Virginia Tech game, he had picked up more fouls (4) than assists (3), points (3), or rebounds (2). Kendall Marshall, Drew's freshman backup, had played spectacularly. In 24 minutes, Marshall put up the following line: 3-4 from the field, 2 rebounds, 9 points, 9 assists, and zero turnovers. But statistics, even advanced ones, don't really tell us much about point guard play in college. Yes, Marshall thoroughly outproduced Drew. But when you're the point guard at Carolina, production is a secondary concern. You can shoot badly from the floor, turn the ball over, and have teammates botch assists, but as long as you're pushing tempo and finding streaking and cutting teammates, you're doing your job. Marshall set a torrid pace, but he did it in a strange, almost counterintuitive way. Carolina fans were still dizzied from the memories of Raymond Felton and Ty Lawson — two of the fastest players to ever set foot in Chapel Hill. But Felton and Lawson set pace through more traditional means — they got the ball and ran like jackrabbits up the court. Marshall, who runs with his back as straight as a ramrod and keeps his head up at all times, was much, much slower...

...FACTS George is an employee of the Charlotte Bobcats, a Charlotte, North Carolina basketball team. George has a valid contract that guarantees his job for 5 more years. His boss, Jerry, want him out now. Jerry begins to take extreme measures to make George so uncomfortable at work that he has no choice but to vacate his position. Allegations include: depriving George of air conditioning in the middle of July, alienating George from his coworkers through coercion by Jerry, and the recording and playing of George’s personal phone calls over the company loudspeaker. George decides to take measures to sue Jerry for intentional infliction of emotional distress for the above allegations. ISSUE Under North Carolina law, do the above allegations fulfill the basis for liability of intentional infliction of emotional distress? RULE Under North Carolina law as iterated in Stanback v. Stanback, 297 N.C. 181, 196 (N.C. 1979), Liability arises under this tort when a defendant’s conduct exceeds all bounds usually tolerated by decent society and the conduct causes mental distress of a very serious kind.” Courts also outline the elements needed for a successful tort in the area of intentional infliction of emotional distress in the case of Holloway v. Wachovia Bank & Trust Co., N.A., 339 N.C. 338 (N.C. 1994), “The essential elements of a claim for intentional infliction of emotional distress are 1) extreme and outrageous conduct by the defendant 2) which is intended to and does in...

... Numbers. Yes, just keep counting I told myself and maybe just maybe it would be over quicker than I thought, damn, lost count. The Sound of the blasts felt as destructive as my thoughts, the pungent stench of dirt and sweat marched its way into my nostrils, I fear I’ll die in this hell hole. Unidentified. Unknown. A single thought paralysed itself in my mind, what if I never see my mother again? What if I never hear her voice again? Oh God, what was the last thing the I ever said to her? I’m going to get myself hysterical; I need to breathe, even if I cried would anyone hear me above their own fear? I remember the wailing of the walls and the merciless shaking of the ground and like sheep to slaughter we were led to this Godforsaken railway station. I’m currently sandwiched between an older man who hasn’t stopped praying since we got here, and a young woman who looks to be either sleeping or praying? I just want to grab that stupid crucifix from his hands and throw it as far away from me as possible, where was God when I needed him, when my mum is somewhere out there in the world. Alone. And all I can see is fucking darkness, maybe if I click my heels three times and think of home... Home, that seems alien to me now I wonder what’s left of it now, probably blown to shards by these blasted Nazi’s. I remember marking the door at my height every year and laughing at my...
