...The phenomenon of interest (birth trauma and what it means to women) was clearly identified in the report. In the introduction the authors stated that women’s perception of birth trauma is quite different from the perception of the same phenomenon by health care providers. She also uses a term “in the eyes of the beholder” to emphasize that for every woman this phenomenon is unique. It is stated that PTSD after childbirth is quite prevalent and several studies support this fact. However, research is regarding the understanding of the birth trauma phenomenon from the woman’s experience lacking. The problem statement was worded clearly and directly and I wasn’t ambivalent about what problem will be discussed in the remainder of the article. Due to a lack of current literature on the subject and prevalence of PTSD after childbirth one can see the value in conducting such a study and the potential benefit to the profession of nursing. By understanding the perception of birth trauma to women, we as nurses will be able to facilitate better care, improve patients’ experience with childbirth, and prevent PTSD associated with childbirth. The methods used are not mentioned in the first paragraph but in a separate section following the research question where they are outlined clearly. The method of interviewing participants in focus groups is consistent with the naturalistic paradigm of qualitative research. The researcher clearly explained the reason behind choosing a qualitative...

...Nursing Research Critique Assignment Kaplan University Nursing Research Critique Assignment I will be critiquing two different articles. Both studies are nursing studies that evaluate outcomes. I will be following specific key points for a quantitative perspective and a qualitative perspective. There is a guideline that I will be following for each article that includes identifying and examining the data collection and data analysis methodologies used in each study. The names of the articles are The Experience of Patients Undergoing Awake Craniotomy and The Effects of Crossed Leg Blood Pressure Measurement. The references will also be reviewed to determine validity and relationship to the new study. Data Collection Quantitative Study: The operational and conceptual definition is congruent. The key variables were operationalized using the best possible method and with adequate justification. Specific instruments were adequately described and were good choices, given the study purpose, the variables being studied, and the study population. The instrument used specifically was a blood pressure monitor. The blood pressure cuff size, dimensions, and inflation pressure were described. The blood pressure monitor was adequately pretested and calibrated before the study began by a biomedical technician (Foster-Fitzpatrick, Ortiz, Sibilano, Marcantonio, & Braun, 1999). It can be determined that the data collection methods provided data that was reliable and valid. The...

...ARTICLE CRITIQUE: PARTICIPANT PERCEPTIONS OF A NOVEL PHYSIOTHERAPY APPROACH Name Class Professor University/Institution City, State Date Introduction Smith et al. (2012) explored the importance of the Blue prescription to inducing physical activity among people with multiple sclerosis. Although, the title of the study appears long, it is complete and accurate. Specifically, the title implies that the qualitative study was conducted on the participants after they received medical help in order to determine their perceptions of the Blue prescription as an intervention for enhancing levels of physical activity. Study Abstract An abstract refers to a brief summary of a concluded research. A proper abstract inspires the reader to scan through the research purposely to learn more about what the investigation was all about. The abstract contains the following primary elements of the research: the problem statement; the significance of physical activity among patients with multiple sclerosis; the methodology; results; and the scientific gap of adopting the Blue prescription as a way of ensuring that patients overcome the problem. Although, the study abstract is comprehensive, and has relevant keywords, it is not complete due to the lack of limitations of the study. Introduction and Study Objectives The introduction to the research study is spot on, in the sense that it offers a deep insight into the topic being studied. The authors began by highlighting the...

...functional ability. The prevention of falls in the older population is the most important area in clinical practice which reduces fall associated mortality and morbidity. Fear of falling is commonly identified although poorly defined phenomena among older people (close, 2005). Approximately one third of adults over 65 years of age fall each year. Many will have some psychological consequences after a fall. A frequently expressed psychological factor is loss of confidence in self functioning. This may lead to physical deconditioning, depression, isolation from the society and a low quality of life. Low fall-related efficacy is associated with the number and severity of future falls in older adults with balance disorders (Bishop 2010). A critique of the qualitative study. The importance of identity in falls prevention is a qualitative study where author clearly offers a picture of the occurrence of falls, its prevention and the interventions in older adults who lives in our community. Each individual dreams to have a community where older adults can live to their maximum functional ability. In today's health care system, there are established interventions that can reduce the falls and help the older people to live a longer and better quality of life. This can be achieved by educating them with home environment modification, community based safety programmes, providing information about different services available in the society (Walker,...

...A Critique of a Qualitative Research Article: Andropause Syndrome in Men Treated for Metastatic Prostate Cancer By Grand Canyon University NRS-433V Purpose of the Study Many people understand that women go through Menopause; it is not uncommon to hear a lady friend or a stranger say “there goes another hot flash” and then fan herself with whatever happens to be within reach. What many might be unfamiliar with is Andropause, or the equivalent of male Menopause. Andropause Syndrome in Men Treated for Metastatic Prostate Cancer: A Qualitative Study of the Impact of Symptoms (Grunfeld, Halliday, Martin, Drudge-Coates, 2011) , is a research article that talks about 21 men and their experience while undergoing androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) for treatment of metastatic prostate cancer. It is noted during this research that the participants experienced many different and debilitating symptoms. By exploring the feelings and symptoms of the men, it is the hope of the researchers that a positive impact can be made by professionals if they are more assertive in talking with patient’s about the effects of ADT treatment. When done, this can enable the patient to seek help with the side-effects whether it be medicinal, mechanical, or psychological (Grunfield, Halliday, Martin, Drudge-Coates, 2011). Literature Review Background. In this research article, 41 references were used with the majority of them being from other journal articles. This study takes place in the United...

...Article Critique - Adherence to ocular hypotensive therapy: Patient health education needs and views on group education This paper evaluates a medical journal article entitled, “Adherence to ocular hypotensive therapy: Patient health education needs and views on group education,” by Waterman et.al. published on the Journal of Patient Preference and Adherence, Volume 7, pages 55-63, 2013. While the title is apparent to the clinicians on the topic that the article is looking at, it may be slightly challenging for the general public to understand the term "ocular hypotensive therapy" in the title as it was not explained anywhere in the article. The term may be phrased in a more understandable manner such as "therapy to reduce eye pressure" or "glaucoma therapy" as this article is from an open access medical journal focusing on patient preference and adherence, the general public who are interested in this topic will have access to it and they intend to understand and get useful information from the article. Therefore, the title should be as clear as possible to stimulate the interest of not only the clinicians but also the general public to encourage them to read. Nonetheless, after reading the article, the title is considered as precise and concise in reflecting the content of the work. As the title of the article suggests, the main issue discussed in the article was that as in other long-term conditions, there is a tendency in patients with glaucoma did not adhere to their prescribed...

Coping and Resiliency Skills in African American Urban Youths Introduction Growing up with a limited understanding of how to regulate emotions and cope in the face of ubiquitous urban blight, severe socio-economic hardship, and systemic racism is difficult for many urban youths. Resiliency is a term that is frequently associated with urban youths, especially if we consider the fact that according to the U.S. Census data in today’s America approximately one third of this population group lives in urban areas (Census, 2000). Given a steady increase in the numbers of low-income children living in urban areas, efforts to understand this particular phenomenon are critical. In this context, it is important not only to examine the negative (e.g.: drug abuse, violence, etc.) but also the positive self-regulatory skills (e.g.: athletics, education, creativity, dance, poetry, etc.), which urban youths employ as coping mechanisms. Another concomitant question that needs to be explored is how urban youth exercise positive self-regulatory skills under different circumstances and in specific contexts. This study specifically examined the phenomenon of coping and resiliency skills in African American urban youths growing up in the developmental contexts of various environmental stressors...

...Converting data into business value at Volvo Case Study 1 By Michael Miller To Dr. Darlene Ringhand CIS 500: Information Systems and Decision Making Strayer University Prince George’s MD Campus The cloud infrastructure that Volvo included into its networks was a very good idea. They applied this idea to all the aspects in their cars. The idea of including this technology in their product I’m sure customers today would love and depend on the technology. Volvo product has hundreds of sensors that generate data that is utilized not only by the car itself but also by the cloud back to the manufacturer. Volvo has systems that data is collected from a multitude of different things. The cloud that Volvo uses has the ability to share information about any particular vehicle and any problem that they may be having and stop issues before the vehicle fails to operate. Volvo Corporation transforms data into knowledge by having centralized data which will be able to make a lot more accurate predictions and by letting the company to get a chance to better target marketed campaigns and understand profitability of customers. Volvo performs forensic examinations to cars that were in accidents to understand problems with vehicles and take steps to help from them happening.
