...that Barack Obama is an influential and very effective speaker. He is able to inspire masses of people with his simple, yet articulate use of words. He always speaks with a sense of smooth confidence, yet never near the spectrum of arrogance. Most importantly, he is so effective because he accurately knows his audience before performing the speech. Obama is truly talented in his ability to make people identify with him, because the audience feels as if he walked a mile in their shoes. Interestingly, Obama is rarely seen reading a speech. The president is known to read from tele-prompters however the audience is unable to tell. It appears to the audience that Obama creates every speech on the spot, however he is somehow able to convey every point with extreme clarity, and free from any pauses. It is clear that Obama is a naturally talented orator, and that he has honed his skills through practice at Harvard, and throughout his political career. No matter what side of the political arena one may be on, seeing Obama speak live is a compelling experience, more so than past presidents. He is able to instantly connect with the audience with clarity and conviction. Obama is known by many as the people’s president, with his goal of strengthening the middle class, and opposing trickledown economics. He effectively communicates with the lower and middle class demographic because he radiates a feeling of humility and his diction is simple, clear, and effective. Obama can easily...

...HEALTHCARE REFORM 2 Obamacare or Socialism? There has been much of a debate since the signing of President Barack Obama’s Healthcare Bill. People started throwing around words like government control and socialism, stating that it was a description of a new legislation. The people are afraid that the system will destroy the free market economy and will take away the people’s right to choose. “The massive law pushing the United States toward universal health coverage won Supreme Court validation on June 28 in a decision that advances the most ambitious reshaping of American social policy in generations (Woodward, C. 2012).” They have repeatedly said that this bill is constitutionally questionable and the government does not have the right to obligate the whole nation to purchase healthcare insurance. According to the opposition, President Obama is lobbying for disguised tax on employment and consequently the number of uninsured Americans will increase. “The overhaul is unfolding in stages and is to peak in 2014 when all Americans will be required to have health insurance, with a few narrow exceptions (Woodward, C. 2010).” In defense of the legislation, Obama said that it will extend the health coverage to an additional 32 million people and will decrease the expenses significantly. The legislation is based on government mandates, regulations, and subsidies. This...

...staring in awe among millions of people who were just as excited as me. I could not begin to comprehend how much this event would affect my life because I had a first-hand account of experiencing history. January 20, 2009, will forever be among the most remarkable events in my life. Witnessing the inauguration of our nation's’ first African American president holds a momentous place in my heart and mind. Two a.m. Sunday morning before Barack Obamas’ inauguration ceremony, many of my family and friends loaded a crowded charter bus for the historic journey to our Nations’ Capital to witness this life changing event. As we traveled 10 hours by bus to Washington D.C, you could hear women laugh like hyenas and gallant voices of men telling tales of when they encountered instances of racism and injustice. As I sat inaudible in my bucket seat wrapped in a patchwork chevron quilt, I immersed myself in the cultural conversations around me while acquiring knowledge of the struggles my elders endured during the Civil Rights Movement. One common facet in every conversation was the fact that they never thought they would live to see a black president. Oh, how it made me proud to see how our nation has evolved and that my elders lived to experience it too! Further down the road as we neared our destination, I started to notice droves off charter buses from other states swarm the roads. Once we reached the hotel Sunday afternoon, I departed the bus to check-in. It seemed to take hours...

...The Honorable Gregory A. Ballard Mayor of Indianapolis 2501 City-County Bldg. 200 E. Washington St. Indianapolis, IN 46204 Dear Mayor, Today with the advanced progress of medical science and the health system capacity, the population‘s health care seeking behavior is much more improved. However the fact that people’s access to good health care should or should not depend on social factors such as their level of income or social status has so far aroused much concerns. As far as I am concerned, all people should be allowed to access health care services[->0] regardless of their social backgrounds. Good care access is considered as one of the essential human rights. This matter has become far more pressing in this modern society. People day by day suffer from inevitable new threats that strongly affect their length of life such as terminal illness, accidents, epidemics and other emerging diseases like stress and so forth. Health care service is therefore very important to ensure people’s survival first, and then step by step improve people’s quality of life. Getting accessed to health system[->1] for all people is one of the effective solutions to narrow down the gap between the rich and the poor. As the poor are offered chances to improve both physical and mental health, they are more likely to get jobs and work more efficiently. In this way, they are able to escape the overwhelming poverty and explore their potential capacity. Throughout so many years...

...Vice President Watson, Mr. Speaker, Mr. Chief Justice, President Obama, Vice President Biden, reverend clergy, fellow citizens, we observe today not merely my inauguration, but the continuation of democracy in this country. I have sworn before you that I will uphold the blessings of American liberty. The liberty we expect and cherish is conditional today. Together, we hold the power to enrich that liberty through equality and tolerance. And yet the same liberties promised by our forefathers are only half achieved in this nation – the liberties of hope, security, and courage given to us by Almighty God. Let every American know, whether they agree with my stances or not, that we shall ….. to assure the enrichment and entitlement of those liberties for all Americans. To those...

...Dear President Obama, How important do you think civic and political participation is? I think it’s very important Mr. President, because Civic and political participation prevents decisions from being made by a few people. In my opinion participation by the masses insures greater freedom. Mr. President, I believe you are familiar with Booker T. Washington. The brave intelligent man who started a college for African Americans after the civil war. He taught African Americans how to live successfully as free people. He also promoted education for African Americans all over the country, and gave instructions in subjects like taking initiative, buying or building houses, building a competitive business, budgeting, keeping a house, all kinds of things nobody learned while in bondage. Booker T. Washington was influenced by disfranchisement and the Jim Crow discriminatory laws enacted in the post-Reconstruction Southern states in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. So tell me, why don’t we have a national holiday celebrating and honoring Booker T? Washington sir? He has done so much for African Americans like me. Thanks to him your daughters and I can go to college and get a higher education. He definitely deserves a holiday celebrating just him and his accomplishments. So, start working on making that happen Mr. President. Sincerely, Britt Ray Works Cited “Bio.” Booker T. Washington Biography, 2015. ...John 1 Professor Tucker English 124 24 November 2012 Discrimination across time Dear Reverend King, It has been over 40 years since you have fought for racial inequality here in the United States. Your work during the Civil Rights Movement has greatly impacted the minds and social ideas for just about everyone living in the United States today. Today many people are aware of the idea that a person should not judge another person based on the color of their skin, but rather the content of their character. Today many of the rules concerning segregation and racial inequality that existed during your time are long gone thanks to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and many other laws against discrimination. Laws for segregation for things such as water fountain use, schooling, restrooms, park benches, buses, trains, and segregated seating have all disappeared. Racist name calling is now perceived inappropriate and un-American and interracial marriages are at an all-time high. It is quite evident that racial equality is much closer today than when you were alive despite what many people believe. In the year 2012 things are very different socially than in the early 1950s and 1960s. Children are taught at a very early age that racial discrimination and racism is wrong throughout the nation. In 1968 a documentary was released by PBS called “The Eye of the Storm” that taught young third graders that racial discrimination was wrong. The thing that made this documentary truly special...

...Dear President Barack Obama, I know you won’t probably get to read this yourself because you’re running a country but I’m writing you so I can address a few recent executive orders in my current resident Florida. I would like to start by stating that rights aren’t always absolute, the line should be drawn line on where to call actions taken by the government tyrannical, and separate those that are justified. If someone calls 911 and report a bomb threat at a government building and there isn’t yes they should get punished. But if someone is just simply stating their opinion they shouldn’t lose their right. Recently your officers and agent have come to the city of Pompano Beach which happens to be my hometown and forcing people out of their homes against their will, saying it was for their own safety. Mr. President I’m sure you’re familiar with this 4th amendment and you would notice this is a huge violation of the people’s rights. Yes there might have been a few houses that was flooded but that doesn’t excuse them for telling people that it’s mandatory for them to leave their homes. Even if there was danger near you can’t force anyone to leave their homes, you can warn them and suggest they leave their homes but you can’t force them to leave their houses. Another issue the people of Pompano Beach are facing is the agents won’t allow legally owned firearms inside of the storm shelters. Because they own the firearms legally this is a violation of their constitutional right...

...War Past and Present Through out time man has been involved in many wars due to man wanting to protect what is theirs or to gain more power and wealth. No matter how or why a war is started one thing that is clear, war has an ever-lasting effect on everything and everyone. By true nature man is genital but man is also protective and man will fight to protect what is right or what man holds dear. War has taking a toll on land across the world that war has been fought on, and war has also taken an even bigger toll on those who were involved and those who have yet to be involved in war. War is something that can bring things together that might not of been on any regular day and yet war has the power to rip it all apart. War has been here since the beginning and war will be here till the end there for lasting forever in our history. War Past and Present When World War 1 began many thought that the soldiers would return home to their families by December 1914 victorious, yet what started out with high expectations ended more than four years later than the original hope. According to Jennifer Rosenberg (n.d), “World War 1 was an extremely bloody war, with huge losses of life and little ground lost or won“ (para 1). Soldier’s that fought in WW1 were fighting their enemies by hiding trenches firing artillery and lobbed grenades, but when ordered the...

...Why Guantanamo Bay hurts National Security National security in the United States is constantly talked about due to the fear instilled in American citizens. The United States government has been expanding its budget in order to protect citizens’ safety and liberties, especially in security. But what happens if national security does not get upheld, but rather used as an excuse to torture prisoners? On February 23, 2016, President Barack Obama announced plans to the Guantanamo Bay detention camp in Cuba. He states, “The plan we're putting forward today isn't just about closing the facility at Guantanamo. It's not just about dealing with the current group of detainees, which is a complex piece of business because of the manner in which they...

...Dear Mr. President The arts and humanities have became increasingly important part of everyone's life, especially nowadays, when world is saturated with globalization and new technologies. That is why the arts should be supported not only by authorities, but first of all by ourselves. Pictures, music, theaters, books, films gift people pleasure and satisfaction. If these items do not exist, human beings will be transformed into robots or zombie. The arts and humanities fuel our souls. Music is the most beautiful voice of the soul, poetry is its sense while pictures is its face. Barack Obama, the President of the United States of America affirms :”A power of words and music helps us to appreciate a beauty, but also to understand the pain. ”. Definitely it is true. The arts and humanities save mankind from terrible afflictions, in the hardest times, find a way to the heart of every person and sow grains of love, kindness and peace in it. Moreover the arts and humanities are immense and mysterious source of beauty, love and inspiration. Every person is unique and talented. God created us with imaginations and feelings. Therefore, we should make efforts and find ourselves, recognize ourselves in each other. Joshua Bennett, James Earl Jones are great examples for us. ...February 26, 2014 USA Today 7950 Jones Branch Mc Lean, VA, 22108 Re: The minimum wage debate Dear Editor: I was very pleased to read your article about the minimum wage battle. This is an issue that affects so many Americans. I agree with you that President Obama faces a difficult path in his efforts to raise the federal minimum wage. I also agree that the minimum wage increase is well overdue. I understand when you stated that many Americans are living almost in poverty. I once was example of one of those minimum wage workers. In 2009 I lost a well paying job due to layoffs, and I was forced to take a job making $10.50 an hour which was above the minimum wage. Thank God I didn't have any children at that point, Because I barely made it off of that $10.50. I had to adjust my lifestyle, I also had to call my mortgage company to request an adjustment to my monthly mortgage. The mortgage company worked with me, and lowered my payments, until I was back on my feet. So I definitely think that the minimum wage should be increased. I applaud the families that are making it work, and pray that they get the raise that they deserve. It was also great to read a testimony from a minimum wage worker. Alberta Loder, and her struggle to raise her daughter. She simply needed more money hourly to provide simple things like more food, and milk for her daughter. I think that it is a good thing that you provided a break down in Alberta's monthly expenses, so that other people especially the...

...been pinpointed to the decade of the 1960’s. During this decade, we faced “diverse social conflict, followed by the Watergate scandals, and a decade of economic decline” Milakovich & Gordon (2013). Public trust continued to plummet and bleed over into the late 1970’s during the “taxpayers revolt” and was “followed by decentralization, deregulation, and devolution of decision-making authority from the federal to state and local governments, in part as a reaction against perceived bureaucratic excess” Milakovich & Gordon (2013). It wasn’t until the 1980’s that the trust began to escalate during the first term of President Ronald Regan. President Regan brought hopes of “tax cuts, higher corporate profits, and less regulation of the economy” Hetherington & Husser (2012). However, it wasn’t long before the trust began to push downwards during President Regan’s second term, when the Iran-Contra affair became public. The historic low point for trust occurred during the 1994 congressional election, when the Republican Party took control of the House of Representatives for the first time in 40 years. The trend during this continued decline tends to be linked to the “government’s ability to deliver services, maintain...

...October 1, 2014 Dear Sarafina, Hello my dearest pen pal. I hope this letter finds you well and in good spirits. Since we are still in the getting to know you phase of our correspondence I thought it would be a good idea for us to relay some information about my heritage and cultural history as you have done for me about yours. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the Italian history through your eyes, experiences and historical research. Are you ready for a historical walk through of my African-American culture? Although I reside in the United States now my history starts in Africa where my people were sold off and enslaved to the white Americans. The first African slaves were brought here to the United States in the Colony of Jamestown Virginia in 1619. Slaves were brought here to help aid in the production of mass crops such as tobacco. Slavery continued and ultimately ended on December 18, 1865. During the slavery era there were things that aided slaves like the under ground rail road. This was an avenue that helps slaves escape to freedom. One of the most famous escaped slaves was Harriet Tubman. She escaped in 1849 and was one of the most celebrated and effective leaders of the Underground Railroad. President Lincoln was a key element when it came to dealing the freeing of the slaves when he released the emancipation proclamation in 1863. Although Lincoln accelerated the movement of freeing the slaves he knew it would take a constitutional amendment to let the...
