...Edition), by M. Neil Brown and Stuart M. Keeley provides the benefits of critical thinking as it relates to the process of asking the right kinds of questions. The authors define a critical thinking method by creating a 10-step strategy process that can be used to evaluate a memo from Mr. Anil Ravaswami, Vice-President of Human Resources of Cliffside Holding Company of Massapequa. The memo expressed his opinion about the junior leadership training program to Ms. Cynthia Castle, CEO of Cliffside Holding Company of Massapequa. Step 1: What are the issues and the conclusion? Finding the issue is raising questions about what is right and wrong, good or bad (Browne & Keely, 2010). The company want to send employees off-site each year for leadership training. (The request was for his office to evaluate the merit of the request.) The twelve senior executives hadn’t want to attend the seminar and yet the company was successful. They think that it is a waste. Mr. Anil Ravaswami, vice president of Human Resources believes that leadership traits are innate. The issue set forth in Mr. Anil’s memo is whether to invest financially in the junior executives for annual leadership training. The conclusion set forth by Mr. Anil is not to invest in the training program. He said: “Cliffside Holding Company of Massapequa should not invest in the proposed initiative to send its junior executives for annual leadership training.” (Cliffside Holding Company of Massapequa, 2014). He believes that it would...

...as possible. I will also provide a thorough evaluation of the issues presented and assess ideas critically, demonstrating clear and consistent treatment of each evaluation. Furthermore, I will verify the information that was in the memo and I will note what is not in the memo. For the last closure of the argument, I will end this paper with a conclusion of what I have critically completed. 1. What are the issues and conclusions? On October 20, 2011, President of APEU Union Local 121, Mr. Hector Fuentes, sent a request to the Human Resource Manager, Ms. Mary Ford regarding notification letter sent by Governor Gloria Gainor. Mr. Fuentes wanted Ms. Ford to evaluate the letter he received from the Governor notifying the union that the state intends to outsource and privatize the information systems management function within the Department of Motor Vehicles. This memo that Mr. Fuentes received from Ms. Ford was in response to the request of Mr. Fuentes to be evaluate simply because of issues and concern for the DMV employees which can affect many if proposed decision takes effect. But first, we need to know what the issues are and what conclusions it has in order to know in order to see if this will go even further. According to Browne & Keeley (2010), “Prescriptive issues are those that raise questions about what we should do or what is right or wrong, good or bad (Browne & Keeley,...

...Who is the next NUGS president? My take… I wrote this piece to give my perspective about the ongoing controversy surrounding who the next NUGS president is. I have read the piece written by one Manasseh Azure Awuni titled “WHO IS THE NEXT NUGS PRESIDENT?” published on 25th August 2009 on www.myjoyonline.com. Mr. Awuni was indeed the chairman of a vetting committee and I find his piece interesting. In actual fact, there were two vetting committees involved in the 43RD Annual Delegates Congress of the National Union of Ghana Students. The first one was constituted by NEC and the second was constituted by Congress which was chaired by the author of the aforementioned article. Article 60 clause (a) of NUGS constitution states that Without prejudice to any provision of this constitution, any student aspiring to any position shall be subjected to a vetting by a 7 member committee formed by NEC with approval of CC before congress (Note 1: National Executive Committee or NEC is composed of National President, National General Secretary, National Treasurer, Press and Information Secretary, Coordinating Secretary and President/Representative of component blocs in NUGS) & (Note 2: Central Committee or CC comprises of National Officers and Bloc Representatives, NUGS Representatives on International Bodies, SRC Presidents, SRC Secretaries, Local NUGS Presidents, Local NUGS Secretaries, Women’s Commissioners). The first vetting committee was duly formed by NEC but without the approval of...

...difficulty in securing certain essential raw materials. So Mr. Manson, the company’s president, appointed an experienced purchasing executive, Mr. Post as vice president in charge of purchasing to improve the situation. But there seems to be no improvement Situation: In this case Mr. Post has recently been hired as the VP of the purchasing department. Post decides to centralize a part of the system by announcing through letters to the purchase executives that all the purchases made over $10000 should be cleared with the head office and that he is notified about contracts that are being negotiated at least 1 week in advance. The plant managers express support and co-ordination but the head office doesn’t receive any notice from any plant in this period. Problems: The people in the organization have taken the letter very casually as they feel that it is useless to follow what the letter instructs them to and there could be ‘n’ numbers of reasons for this. 1. The centralization announced just 3 weeks before the peak buying season. 2. Mr. Post not being taken seriously as a result the heads of purchases of the units were not in effect made a part of the decision making process which could have reduced the efficacy of the measure that was decided upon. 3. Mr. Post found wanting in People management; doesn’t visit plant heads, only sends terse letters 4. The reaction of the people might be different provided...

...California. The company was founded by Vince Patton, the current President in 1981. Recently Westchester Distributing, Inc. received a concerning letter from a customer’s attorney. The letter was addressed to Westchester’s Vice President of Finance, Elizabeth Jones, and discussed a supposed improperly discounted sale of beer to a customer, Mr. Moon. The letter stated that such “information was absolutely untrue” and that Mr. Moon returned the beer in order to avoid unfair prejudice to Mr. Mario and Mr. Pavlov, the two employees who sold him the beer. At the conclusion of the letter, Mr. Moon requested a refund of his purchase price. Upon investigating the situation, Vince Patton, found that the two employees, Mr. Mario and Mr. Pavlov were involved in bribing Mr. Moon with a kickback for his purchase of $2.00 per case of slow moving Rising Sun beer. Additionally, not only did they bribe Mr. Moon, they also falsified lunch receipts and broken bottle vouchers to cover the $200.00 they gave to Mr. Moon for the one hundred cases he purchased. The story further unfolded when Mr. Moon was unsatisfied and tried to return the beer at which point Mr. Mario promised him three neon signs to keep the merchandise. Mr. Mario informed Mr. Pavlov of the situation, and he in turn panicked and approached Joe Roberts, the company’s Vice President. Mr. Roberts, instead of relating the events to Mr. Patton, tried to smooth things over by bribing Mr. Moon with a neon sign and asking him to forget about the...

... like the assassination of President Lincoln, but there was not very strong government action taking place in the south. If reconstruction is promised to the black community that didn’t have certain rights and chances before, then everything should be done to grant those promises, and not overlook it. I will be discussing the mindsets of white southerners and about the degrading of blacks that occurs in the testimonies of the Klu Klux Klan, letter from Jourdan Anderson, and the Black Codes of Mississippi. I will also show the absence of the Reconstruction methods, like voting rights and new opportunities for blacks, which were to be put into place after the Civil War. The letter from Jourdan Anderson is such an incredible piece that will be treasured by future generations trying to understand the mindsets of southerners during such a crucial time in history. The words used by Mr. Anderson are perfectly put together to show his former slave master exactly how he feels about him. The old master does not know any better when it comes to consulting his former slave. The master grew up where he was always above blacks, so when he sends his letter to his former slave, he believes in his mind he is being courteous to give his former slave a job. This letter just further explains how difficult it was for reconstruction in the South, because whites could not understand the mindset that blacks had the same rights and opportunities as whites do. The letter offers a sense of exposure...

...Contracts in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico LAW 421- Contemporary Business Law July 8, 2014 On week three of our course, we were ask to write a word paper on Contracts in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico in which we will describe the contracts according with the following cases; * Muñiz v. COPAN, 113 D.P.R. 157 (1982) * Trinidad v. Chade, 153 D.P.R. 280 (2001) * Las Marías v. Municipio, 159 D.P.R. 868 (2003) First, we must define contract in order to understand what role they have in our business law. A business contract is one of the most common legal transactions one can be involved in when running or working on a business. No matter what type of business one may run, having and understanding contract law is the key to creating sound business agreement that will be legally enforceable in the event that a dispute may arises. A contract is a legally enforceable agreement between two or more parties that creates an obligation to do or not do a particular thing. The term “party” can mean an individual person, company, or corporation. Contracts are usually governed and enforced by the laws in the state where the agreement was made (Melvin, 2011). Depending upon the subject matter of the agreement (i.e. sale of goods, property lease), a contract may be governed by one or two types of state law. * The Common Law; the majority of the contract (employments agreements, leases, general business agreements) are controlled by the state’s common law made, form court...
