Decisions in Paradise, Part 1
Kava is a significant island country in the South Pacific. There is cultural diversity of Kava is as diverse as our company. There is an ethnic mix of indigenous South Pacific tribes, African, Spanish, French, Asian (primarily Chinese), and since World War II, a sizable amount of Americans. Kava religious diversity is just as mixed as its ethnic diversity. Roughly 50% of the population is indigenous and the remainder is divided between Christian, Buddhist, and Islamic. Kava receives most of its revenue from the selling and manufacturing of petroleum, coffee, cocoa, spices, sugar, bananas, fishing, natural gas, and tourism. With Kava’s lacks a large work pool-50% of the population is under the age of 15, health issues (HIV/Aids and high risk for avian flu), the apparent likelihood of a natural disaster occurring (tidal waves/tsunami, typhoons/hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and earthquakes just to mention a few), and non-natural disasters (petroleum spills, fires, and terrorism) are destabilizing the island’s infrastructure.
With WDW being a well-known hospitality organization that specializes in “creating the magic” for its guests is committing its resources to help Kava. With WDW helping Kava it will not only help WDW but it will also deliver high value to our shareholders as Kava’s resources are critical to the world’s sustainability.
Before WDW can determine how best to help Kava, an analysis of the following must be made: 1. How these organizational and environmental issues are going to impact the key stakeholders, and 2. The organizational and environmental issues facing Kava and WDW. Organizational Issues Facing Kava Kava’s organizational issues center around their infrastructure. Even though they do have an infrastructure-established businesses, stable state, local, and national governments, churches, and community organizations but since Kava’s infrastructure is so basic, they are unable to handle natural or man-made disasters, handle health issues, or grow its revenue base. WDW’s efforts are going to have to include a plan to support and strengthen Kava’s infrastructures. In regards to the terrorism issue, WDW will need to meet with our State Department, then members of Kava’s infrastructure to determine from whom the terrorism originates, the level of threat to the infrastructure, and how they should handle the terroristic threats. Once these issues are addressed, WDW can then address how to best contain the negative impact of terrorism on their efforts. Organizational Issues Facing WDW
WDW’s Kava personal consists of a Director of Strategic Planning (Alex), who is also the receptionist, and a new strategic business planner (myself). As WDW starts to determine and execute its effort to help Kava, WDW needs to determine the necessary staff in order to execute its effort. The first priority that WDW needs to handle is hiring a receptionist so Alex and I can be completely focused on our other duties.
When considering new hires, WDW needs to choose the residents of Kava as much as possible. Not only does this build a connection with the community but it will also keep the residents involved in the changes. The most important aspect of hiring residents is that they can provide critical information on who’s who, demands of the residents, and how Kava operates. The last thing that hiring the residents will do is recycle the money that is earned back into the community and provide tax monies for Kava’s infrastructures.
WDW is going to have to acquaint themselves with Kava laws regarding the employment of minors especially with 50% of the population being under 15 and it is likely the use of this labor group will be necessary.
WDW is going to have to address the communication issue. Since Kava residents speak a number of different languages, WDW may want to consider bringing over a few employees that speak the languages spoken in Kava and English. If WDW does bring over existing employees not only will it make communicating easier but it will also make the training of the new employees easier. Environmental Issues facing Kava and WDW
Kava’s disasters (natural and man-made): Since natural disasters cannot be avoided or predicted, the impact they have on the lives and infrastructure of Kava can be reduced. WDW can help the government when it comes to setting construction codes standards so rehabbed and new structures are strengthened to withstand the disasters impact.
Kava’s health issues: Flu and HIV/AIDS are the largest health issues that Kava has. WDW needs to see if these are the reason that the live span is so short in Kava residents which is resulting in a majority minor population. WDW must address the findings, as well as improving the care offered by Kava hospitals.
WDW’s work space: The area outside the shift trailer is dirty and unattractive. The inside is littered with paper, equipment, and files. As soon as time allows, WDW needs to build or obtain a suitable office building. Since employees work more effectively and efficiently in a clean and orderly environment, the trailer must have a physical setup that allows WDW staff to be organized and presentable. The inside and outside of the building will need to be kept clean and attractive. Key Stakeholders and How They are Impacted by these Issues
WDW shareholders: The company will be spending a large sum of money to help Kava. The company’s short term value may decrease since the project cost will outweigh initial revenues but as time goes on WDW will recoup these monies and more as Kavas is transformed into a major tourist attraction for all ages.
The environment: Sound and air pollution will increase due to the heavy construction process. There will also be some deforestation due to the construction of the park and new buildings.
Kava residents: There are going to be pros and cons when it comes to the residents of Kava. The pros would be the fact that Kava should welcome WDW’s fair wages, better roads and better facilities from which to operate. The con would be upsetting the residents as the infrastructures are either rebuilt or improved. The residents of Kava may also become hostile towards WDW or each other, if WDW favors one ethnic group over another.
Tourists: With the improvements that WDW has planned, the island will prove to be even more irresistible to the tourists. With the increase in tourism, Kava residents will be able to reinvest in the island’s infrastructures. Conclusion
Even though the reconstruction of Kava is going to cost a fortune, WDW should move forward in helping the residents of Kava. The long-term benefits outweigh any of the cons that may arise.

The island country is obviously struggling and after speaking with Alex, it is apparent to me why we are trying to make our organization known in this area.
