...Columbus, the Indians, and Human Progress When Columbus first completed the journey across the Atlantic Ocean, he landed in what is now the Bahama Islands, being met be Arawak men in women who marveled by the sight of a white man. The Arawak ha an unrivaled sense of hospitality compared to the Europeans. They believed in sharing everything among the people of the tribe. Columbus, however, only cared about the small amount of gold that he saw on their ears, as that was why he was sent to what he thought was India. After seeing the gold he took some of the Indians aboard his ship to attempt to find more gold. Columbus guilt a fort for some of his crew to stay behind in, while he returned to Europe with the good news. Columbus exaggerated in his report to the King and Queen so he was met with seventeen ships and over twelve hundred men. When he returned to the Arawak he captured fifteen hundred Indians and brought back five hundred to Spain. Those who were not captured were required to mine massive quantities of gold or they would be killed. The amount of gold required was impossible for them to acquire so in two years, half of the original 250,000 were dead. Similar stories could be told about the Aztecs, Incas, and Indians of the eastern coast of North America, as they were all conquered in the same way. Indians were, at first, treated with respect, but then settlers took advantage of them to steal their resources and land. As a result wars occurred between the settlers and the...

Read the Big Ideas and Key Understandings and the Synopsis. Please do not read this to the students. This is a description for teachers about the big ideas and key understanding that students should take away after completing this task. Big Ideas and Key Understandings Writers use irony to fuel the plot of a story. Synopsis Bill and Sam decide that the best way to finance their upcoming land swindle is to kidnap the child of a wealthy citizen and hold him for ransom. The boy they choose, instead of being the docile, frightened child one would expect, is a terror who abuses Bill in every way he can think of, all in the name of fun. The response to their ransom note is not what they would have wished: instead of paying $1500 to get Johnny back, the father demands $250 to take the boy off their hands. In desperation, they agree, and end the story poorer than they began. Read the entire selection, keeping in mind the Big Ideas and Key Understandings. Re-read the text while noting the stopping points for the Text Dependent Questions and teaching Tier II/academic vocabulary. During Teaching 1. Students read the entire selection independently. 2. Teacher reads the text...

...For this project, you will need to observe the amount and type of crime being reported, as well as the characteristics of those individuals involved in the crime. In your write up, you should identify the dates and networks of your media sources. First, you should report: 1. The percentage of stories dealing with crime 2. The proportion of different categories of crime presented (violent vs. non-violent, street crime vs. white-collar, et cetera) 3. Pertinent demographic characteristics of the offender(s) and victim(s) Next, you should assess and critically reflect on the representation of crime in the media: 1. Do the media present an accurate picture of the overall crime rate? 2. Do the media tend to focus on a particular type of crime? If so, why might this be the case? 3. Do the media present an accurate picture of offenders? Of victims? What notable differences exist between media representations and official data for these two groups? 4. What are the possible implications of media (mis)representations of crime in society? You may choose to review official statistics on crime here: http://www.albany.edu/sourcebook. ...weirder than fiction. Let’s not start with Donald Trump because I’m going to need to try and get a few laughs in before I burst into tears in front of you all. Let’s start with the party nominees, before Hillary and Donald even began the actual race. So on the left we have the Democrats, who initially thought that Hillary would be a shoo-in for their nominee, until a kindly, Dumbledore-like plot twist named Bernie Sanders burst in through the doors, capturing the youth vote and promising equality and more socialistic policies. But Bernie wasn’t the only person that Hillary was competing with, oh no, there were also notable candidates such as Vermin Supreme and Deez Nuts. You’ll be surprised to hear that although Vermin promised everyone free ponies and time travel research, he did not get the candidacy. Same with Deez Nuts, who was actually a 15 year old who thought it would be funny to see what would happen if he entered. Then, of course, there was the opposing side: The republicans. With nearly 8 million popular votes Ted Cruz followed Trump, albeit a little less successfully, leaving a trail of devastating memes in his wake. Infamously, he has become known as the “Zodiac Killer” of the election. Although the meme about the 60’s and 70’s serial killer first came to light in 2013 the dizzying heights of this election have made it seem all the more plausible, along with his many warped, racist views. Leatherface for president? Norman Bates? Hannibal Lecter anyone? No thank...
